All Stars Game ends in 5-5 tie
Nederlands
VLEUTEN (Neth.) - The sixth edition of the annual All Star Game ended in a 5-5 tie on Sunday (September 6). Beforehand, it was decided that only seven innings were to be played today. A possible tie-break was announced when the score was tied, but that wasn't played, as all available pitchers had been used. And with that, the All Star Game ended in a tie for the first time since the event was first scheduled in 2010.

For the first time in 26 years, a Softball All Star Game also was organized today.
Recap SB All Star Game

The game had a different set-up than in previous years. In the first five editions, the game was played between a Team North and a Team South. For that purpose, the eight teams playing in the Dutch big league were divided geographically to determine what players of what teams were available for the two All Star-squads. This year, there was a Team Red and a Team Blue to come to a more equally balanced squad.

2014Hoofddorp (Pioniers)North vs. South14-6
2015Vleuten (UVV)Red vs. Blue5-5
Today's game was well-balanced. It not only ended in a 5-5 tie, the line score also looked equal. Team Blue opened with two runs in the second inning, then Team Red tied the score in the third at bat. Both teams then each scored once in the fourth inning and each also scored twice in the sixth inning. Besides that, both teams collected eight basehits and commited one defensive error.

It was the third time that the All Star Game was hosted by UVV at their site in Vleuten. Earlier editions were played in The Hague (2010), Haarlem (2013) and Hoofddorp (2014).

In contrast to the previous editions, it were not the fans who selected the teams this year. For the five earlier All Star Games, fans could cast their votes for their favorite players, resulting in a roster based on most votes. This time, the players were selected based on their statistics of this years regular season.

Homerun Derby

Preceeding the All Star Game was the Homerun Derby, which was won for the third time by Bryan Engelhardt of Corendon Kinheim. In the Game, Engelhardt was the designated hitter for Team Red and went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts.

Joining Engelhardt for the Homerun Derby were Gianison Boekhoudt (Curaçao Neptunus), Quintin De Cuba (Vaessen Pioniers), Bas Nooij (L&D Amsterdam Pirates) and Dashenko Ricardo (Corendon Kinheim). Except for Engelhardt, all other participants were catchers.

Engelhardt beat Boekhoudt (last years winner) in the fourth tie-break, after the final of the Homerun Derby ended in a tie. But those tie-breaks should not have been needed, as Engelhardt already won the contest in the final.

The five players all participated in two rounds in which each of them got an bat of two minutes each. Engelhardt won the first round, hitting seven homeruns, while Boekhoudt and De Cuba hit four each. In the second round, Engelhardt added eight homeruns and Boekhoudt seven to become the two finalists.

In the two preliminary rounds, as well as the final, all players got 10 swings (whether or not the ball was hit). Boekhoudt, who batted first in the final, and Engelhardt each homered three times. However, Engelhardt hit a fourth homerun, which was missed by the officials. Instead of Engelhardt winning, a tie-break followed in which both players got three swings, resulting in one homerun for both players. A second and third tie-break resulted in no homeruns. But in the fourth, Boekhoudt again added no fourbagger, while Engelhardt hit one on the second pitch, which was his 20th homerun of the day. And with that, Engelhardt did win the HR Derby after all.

Engelhardt also won the Homerun Contest in 2011 and 2012 when the All Star Game also was played in Vleuten.

The Game

Before the game started, the ceremonial first pitch was thrown by 88-year old Henk Ferweda, who is a member of host-club UVV for 72 years.

In the game, Team Blue led three times, but Team Red came alongside each time. Team Blue was led by Head Coach Evert-Jan 't Hoen (Head Coach Curaçao Neptunus), who was assisted by Ralph Milliard (Head Coach HCAW) and Pitching Coach Eric de Vries (Pitching Coach Vaessen Pioniers). Team Red was led by Head Coach Wim Martinus (Head Coach Corendon Kinheim). He was assisted by Ferenc Jongejan (Head Coach UVV) and Richard Brown (Assistant Coach Mampaey The Hawks).

Rob Cordemans started for Team Red and retired all three batters he saw in the top of the first inning. Moments later, Team Red got two baserunners off of Team Blue-starter Orlando Yntema. With one out, Yntema hit Mervin Gario with a pitch, then Gilmer Lampe reached on an error. The inning ended when a flyout by Bryan Engelhardt ended in a double play, as Lampe was also eliminated.

In the top of the second inning, Team Blue opened the score off of new pitcher David Bergman. The righthander was added to the squad as a replacement for Tom Stuifbergen, who was unavailable due to an injury. Bergman began with a strikeout, but then gave up singles to Christian Diaz and Vince Rooi. The two runners advanced on a grounder by Daniel Fernandes. Hereafter, Shaldimar Daantji singled enabling Diaz to score the first run. Shortly thereafter, Rooi scored the next run via a wild pitch.

Berry van Driel took over the pitching for Yntema in the second inning and retired the side, as Bergman did in the top of the third inning. Bergman is one of only four players who have now participated in all six All Star Games. The others are Michael Duursma, Dwayne Kemp and Danny Rombley.

Team Red came alongside in the third inning off of Steven van Groningen. Remco Draijer and Steven Wharwood led off with back-to-back doubles to bring in a run. With one out, Mervin Gario walked, then Gilmer Lampe followed with a single. On this hit, Wharwood tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate. Lampe moved to third base, then scored the tying run on a passed ball.

Both teams scored one run in the fourth inning. In the top of the fourth, with Arshwin Asjes being the new pitcher for Team Red, Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk. He was forced out on a grounder by Christian Diaz, who then advanced to third base on a single by Vince Rooi and scored on a following single by Daniel Fernandes. With two runners on base, two grounders ended the at bat.

Team Red tied the score in the bottom of the fourth off of Van Groningen. Bas Nooij led off with a double, advanced on a passed ball, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Kenny Berkenbosch.

In the fifth inning, two new pitchers both gave up a basehit. In the top of the at bat, Pim Walsma gave up a 2-out single to Raily Legito and in the bottom half, Mike Groen gave up an one-out double to Kevin Moesquit.

Runs were scored again in the sixth at bat. In the top of the sixth, Tom de Blok became the new pitcher for Team Red. He gave up a lead-off single to Christian Diaz, then Tino van Erk also singled. An error on a force play-grounder by Daniel Fernandes loaded the bases. DIaz and Van Erk then respectively scored on a sacrifice fly by Shaldimar Daantji and a grounder by Roy Seltenrijch.

Team Red then also scored twice in its sixth at bat off of new pitcher Kevin Kelly. With two outs, a trio of Amsterdam Pirates-players connected well. First, Kenny Berkenbosch doubled, then scored on a following single by Michael Duursma, who then scored when next batter Remco Draijer also singled. A strikeout ended the at bat, but the score was in balance again, 5-5.

In the top of the seventh inning, De Blok retired the side. And in the bottom of the seventh, Bayron Cornelisse walked lead-off hitter Kevin Moesquit, but then struckout the next three batters.

While initially announced that one tie-break inning might be played, that didn't happen, as all available pitchers already had been used in the seven innings played. And with that, the game ended. Team Blue had only six pitchers on its roster, while Team Red had only five. Also selected for Team Blue was Diegomar Markwell, who was in uniform, but didn't pitch, Also selected for Team Red were Kevin Heijstek and Jim Ploeger, but they weren't available due to sickness and an injury respectively. No replacements were named for them.

Team Blue-rightfielder Christian Diaz, who went 2-for-3, reached base three times and scored three runs, was named Most Valuable Player of the game.
