Netherlands shuts out International Stars; Dutch reach Final
Nederlands

LIEUSAINT-SÉNART (France) - The Netherlands Kingdom Team shutout the team of the International Stars 12-0 on Friday (September 2) on Day 2 of the French International Baseball Tournament - Yoshida Challenge.

With the win, the Orange squad won its second game, after having won 12-4 on Thursday against Germany.

After completion of the game, a spot in the final was not sure yet, as that depended on the score of the game between France met Germany in the evening. When France would have won, the last day of the preliminary round (Saturday) would have been decisive. And could even have ended in a 3-way tie in case of a win of Germany against the Stars and a loss of Netherlands against France. However, this scenario would not become reality, as Germany outscored France 10-8. With that, the Netherlands reached the Final, while France was eliminated, even when it wins on Saturday against the Dutch squad. The winner of the Saturday-afternoon game between Germany and the International Stars will become the second finalist.

In the lopsided game against the International Stars, the Dutch Team collected 14 basehits, including three by Kalian Sams and Dashenko Ricardo. Sams homered and batted in four runs. Randolph Oduber and Nick Urbanus both had two basehits.

The International Stars is a team compiled from mostly American players, who play in the highest leagues in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Sweden.

In the evening, Germany was leading 5-1 halfway the fifth inning, but France then rallied for seven runs. Max Boldt put Germany ahead in the first inning with a 2-run homerun. After France got one run back in its first, Germany added two runs in the second at bat, which were both scored on an error. A homerun by Chris Howard lifted the lead in the third to 5-1.

In the bottom of the fifth, France scored seven runs on only three hits off of three pitchers, who all encountered problems with their control. After a lead-off bunt-single, pitcher Lukas Steinlein hit Norbert Jongerius with a pitch, then a passed ball (run), walk and runscoring single followed. Benjamin Thaqi took over the pitching and saw the bases being loaded on a single. Hereafter, France scored three runs the easy way, thanks to a walk and two hit batters to take a 6-5 lead. Another pitching change followed, but new pitcher Julius Spann also walked in a run and enabled France also to score on a wild pitch to make it an 8-5 score!

Germany got two runs back in the sixth on a double by Maurice Wilhelm and a grounder by Eric Brenk. In the eighth, the Germans re-took the lead. A triple by Marcel Jimenez first tied the score, then a double by Max Boldt made it 9-8. Germany then added an insurance run in the ninth inning on a wild pitch.

International Stars vs. Netherlands
The Netherlands Kingdom Team was off to a strong start, scoring four runs in the first at bat off of starter Matthew Kemp, who played and coached in Germany in the past. He ran into problems immediately, as he walked lead-off hitter Christopher Garia, hit next batter Randolph Oduber with a pitch and then gave up a single to Yurendell de Caster that loaded the bases quickly. Hereafter, Gianison Boekhoudt delivered a runscoring single and a following walk for Kalian Sams accounted for the second run. Moments later, Sams was forced out on a grounder by Dwayne Kemp, which also led to a run. Dashenko Ricardo added an RBI-single to lift the lead to a quick 4-0. And with that, the Orange squad had decided the game more or less already in the first at bat.

In the next two innings, Matthew Kemp recovered. In the second, he hit another batter, this time Yurendell de Caster, who later advanced on a wild pitch, but then stranded on second base. Kemp retired the side in the third, but gave up more runs in the fourth.

Dudley Leonora led off the fourth with a single and moved on a passed ball, then Nick Urbanus and Christopher Garia both walked, loading the bases again with Dutch runners. Randolph Oduber followed with a 2-run double that lifted the lead to 6-0 and led to a pitching change. Jack Shannon took over, but he re-loaded the bases when he walked Yurendell de Caster. Shannon then struckout Gianison Boekhoudt, but hereafter, he gave up a runscoring single to Kalian Sams that made it 7-0.

In the next two innings, the Netherlands left two runners behind. In the fifth, Nick Urbanus singled with one out for the Orange, but was forced out. In the sixth, off of new pitcher David Jauss, Kalian Sams singled with two outs, but stranded.

The next Dutch run was added in the top of the seventh inning. Dashenko Ricardo led off with a single, advanced on an one-out single by Nick Urbanus and reached third when the latter was forced out on a grounder by Gilmer Lampe. Ricardo then scored on a single by Randolph Oduber.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Orange squad reached the 10-run difference via a 4-run rally. Justin Hamilton became the new pitcher for the Stars, but he saw Christian Diaz reach on an error, then gave up a homerun to Kalian Sams, which made it 10-0. Hereafter, Dwayne Kemp and Dashenko Ricardo both singled. Kemp was forced out on a double play-grounder by Dudley Leonora. With Ricardo on second base, Nick Urbanus walked and Gilmer Lampe delivered a runscoring single. With Lampe and Urbanus now on the bases, a throwing error followed and that enabled Urbanus to score the twelfth Dutch run.

Lars Huijer started for the Kingdom-squad. He allowed only one runner to reach second base in the four innings he pitched. In the first, he gave up a 2-out single to Brandon Marshall (who plays for Zurich Challengers in Switzerland), but he was forced out. In the second, Huijer hit Kevin Faries (Cologne Cardinals, Germany) with a pitch, who later moved on a grounder, but then stranded on second base. Huijer retired the side in the third, then gave up another single in the fourth.

Kevin Kelly took over for Huijer in the fifth and retired the side. In the sixth, with two outs, he walked Andrew Medeiros, who plays for French champion Rouen Huskies Kelly then closed with a strikeout.

Bayron Cornelisse pitched the seventh inning for the Dutch and saw the Stars get their second runner on second base. The righthander gave up singles to Alex Carter (Cologne Cardinals, Germany) and Chad Scheilz (Traiskirchen Grasshoppers, Austria). But despite getting their first two batters on base, the Stars were held scoreless. An infield-fly and strikeout accounted for the first two outs, then Scheilz was forced out at second base to end the inning.

With a 12-0 lead, Tom de Blok took over the Dutch pitching in the eighth. He retired the side to end the lopsided game.
