Nederlands

ARLINGTON, Texas (USA) - Former Netherlands National Team-player Sharnol Adriana confirmed to Grand Slam * Stats & News that he will be active in the upcoming season as a coach in the Minor League, as he has been added to the coaching-staff of the Frisco Roughriders, the Double-A Team of the Texas Rangers. Last season, the Roughriders finished in third place in the South Division of the Texas League.

When the 45-year old Adriana starts his season with Frisco, he becomes the second coach with a Netherlands passport to be active in professional baseball. The other of course is Hensley Meulens, who is the Hitting Coach of the Major League-team of the San Francisco Giants. Before becoming a coach in the Major League, Meulens also worked several seasons in the Minor League. In 2005-2008, he was the Hitting Coach of the Indianapolis Indians, the Triple-A team of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2010, Meulens became the Hitting Coach of the Giants, with whom he would win three World Series since then. Both Meulens and Adriana are born on Curaçao.

Sharnol Adriana had a long professional career as a player, as he was active from 1991 through 2014. Initially, Adriana signed a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. He played with this organization in 1991-1998, reaching Triple-A in 1996. Hereafter, Adriana played a few seasons in Independent Leagues, but has played mainly in México since 2000. Adriana also briefly played in the Dutch big league for Neptunus in 2008 and 2009. He last played at age 43 during the 2014 season in México for Broncos de Reynosa and Rojos del Águila de Veracruz.

In 2014, Adriana became the Hitting Coach of the team in Veracruz in the Mexican League, which has a Triple-A designation and is one of the oldest clubs in México, as it was founded in 1903. He also was the team's Hitting Coach last year, but took over as interim-Manager halfway the season in which Veracruz ended in last place in the South Division. Initially, Adriana was to return to the team again this year as its Hitting Coach, but then was offered the possibility to coach in the organization of the Texas Rangers. Adriana got permission from Veracruz to accept that chance.

After completion of last season, Sharnol Adriana initially was the Hitting Coach of Tobis de Acayucan in the Liga Invernal Veracruzana de Béisbol Profesional, one of two Winter Leagues in México. He didn't complete the season there, as he moved to Yaquis de Ciudad Obregón in the Liga Mexicana del Pacifico (the other Winter League) to be one of its coaches. Tobis de Acayucan went on to win the title in its league and with that qualified for participation in the fourth edition of the Serie Latinoamericana, which was played recently in Nicaragua. With Yaquis de Obregón, Adriana went on to reach the semi-final of its league, but the team then was eliminated by Venados de Mazatlán, which last weekend won the 58th edition of the Serie del Caribe, which took place in the Dominican Republic.

During his long and impressive career, Sharnol Adriana became a well-respected player and personality. He also became a very experienced player internationally, as he was a longtime member of the Netherlands National Team in 2001-2009. In that span, Adriana played in 135 official games for the Orange squad. Adriana, who was used at first base and as designated hitter, participated in all big events in this nine-year period, including two Olympic Games (2004, Greece; 2008, China), two World Baseball Classics (2006, Puerto Rico; 2009, Puerto Rico/USA), five World Championships (2001, Taiwan; 2003, Cuba; 2005, Netherlands; 2007, Taiwan; 2009, Europe), two Intercontinental Cups (2002, Cuba; 2006, Taiwan), one Olympic Qualifying Tournament (2003, Netherlands), two European Championships (2003, Netherlands; 2007, Spain) and one Haarlem Baseball Week (2004, Netherlands).
