Exhibition game Cuba vs. Netherlands Kingdom Team postponed by rain
Nederlands

HAVANA (Cuba) - The exhibition game between Cuba and the Netherlands Kingdom Team, scheduled to be played on Monday-afternoon (January 11), has been cancelled due to weather conditions. While the temperature was around 73 degrees Fahrenheit (23 degrees Celsius), it also rained in the afternoon, resulting in all activities being postponed. The game has been re-scheduled for Tuesday-afternoon.

The national teams of Cuba and the Netherlands Kingdom were to meet at 5:30 PM local time on Monday in Estadio Latinoamericano in Cuban capital Havana. The game is part of a Dutch social trade mission to Cuba, which left on Sunday and is led by Lilianne Ploumen, the Netherlands Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Participating in the mission are 77 businesses, which also includes sport-representatives and cultural organisations. With the mission, which runs through January 13, the Netherlands intends to build a broad relationship with Cuba.

Before the start of today's game, a Homerun Derby was to take place with the participation of four players from both teams. Gianison Boekhoudt, Kalian Sams, Sharlon Schoop and Andruw Jones were scheduled to represent the Orange squad, while Osvaldo Vázquel, Lourdes Gourriel, Yulieski Gourriel and José Adolis García were to take part on behalf of Cuba.

It was decided to move all activities to Tuesday, including the Homerun Derby. This will begin at 1:30 PM local time to be followed by a 5-inning game.

Unfortunately, more rain is expected in the Havana-area and the western part of Cuba for Tuesday.

The Cuban national competition was adjusted to make room for this special game. The games in the regular season scheduled for Monday were moved to last Saturday, which meant the teams then had to play a double-header on that day. Tuesday was a travel day for the teams, as the competition resumes on Wednesday.

The last time, the Netherlands National Team played in Cuba was in 2003 during the World Championship. The last time, the two countries met each other was two months ago during the Premier12 in Taiwan.
