Nederlands

LOS ANGELES, California (USA) - Los Angeles Dodgers shutout Chicago Cubs 6-0 on Tuesday-evening (October 18) in Game 3 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series. It was the second consecutive shutout-win for the Dodgers.

In today's game, the Dodgers collected 10 basehits, including a 2-run homerun by Yasmani Grandal and a solo-homerun by Justin Turner. Starting pitcher Rich Hill dominated and gave up only two hits in six innings, while striking out six batters.

On Saturday, Chicago opened with an 8-4 win. With the Cubs leading 3-1, the Dodgers came alongside in the top of the eighth inning. The Cubs then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth, highlighted by a pinch-hit, grand slam homerun by Miguel Montero!

On Sunday, the Dodgers won only 1-0 to even the Series. The lone run in the game was scored in the second inning on a homerun by Adrián González. Pitcher Clayton Kershaw gave up only two hits in seven innings, then Kenley Jansen threw two perfect innings and struckout four batters to close the game.

The 1-0 shutout-win on Sunday was the first 1-0 loss for the Cubs since September 5, 1918. On that day, the Cubs were held scoreless by the legendary Babe Ruth, who then pitched for Boston Red Sox.

(October 18)

Starting pitchers tonight were lefthander Rich Hill (Los Angeles) and righthander Jake Arrieta (Chicago).

Hill came to the Dodgers in August from Oakland A's and was 3-2 for the Dodgers this season. In the entire season, he was 12-5 with a 2.12 ERA. Hill was the starting and losing pitcher in Game 2 of the NLDS against Washington Nationals. He then came back after three days rest and started Game 5, but then had a no-decision in the 4-3 win for the Dodgers. Hill made his fourth career postseason-start today. Hill made his postseason-debut in 2007 during the NLDS when he pitched for the Cubs. He didn't throw against the Cubs in the regular season. His only appearance against his former team was in 2011 when he played for Boston Red Sox.

Arrieta was 22-6 this season with an 1.77 ERA. He last pitched in Game 3 of the NLDS against San Francisco Giants and then had a no-decision, giving up six hits and two runs. The Giants won 6-5 in 13 innings. This season, he pitched once against the Dodgers, striking out eight batters and giving up two hits in seven innings, but had a no-decision. The last time that Arrieta pitched in Dodger Stadium was on August 30, 2015 and he then threw a No-Hitter against the Dodgers. Arrieta also threw a No-Hitter this season against Cincinnati Reds.

After having retired the side in the first inning, Dodger-starter Rich Hill walked two batters in the second inning. With one out, the two runners advanced on a passed ball, but the lefthander followed with a strikeout, then a grounder ended the at bat. He gave up a 2-out single to Kris Bryant in the third, but he stranded on first base.

The Dodgers left a runner behind in the bottom of the first, then were retired in order in the second. But in the third, the Dodgers opened the score. Andrew Toles led off with a single, then moved on a grounder by Rich Hill. With two outs, he scored the first run on a single by rookie Corey Seager.

The Cubs were retired in order again in the top of the fourth. The Dodgers then added two more runs moments later. With one out, Josh Reddick singled, then first stole second base and later also stole third base. Shortly hereafter, he scored when Yasmani Grandal hit a 2-run homerun.

After Hill had retired eight batters in a row, the Cubs reached base again in the top of the sixth. Kris Bryant then recorded his second single, but again was left behind on first base.

In the bottom of the sixth, Justin Turner led off with a homerun to lift the lead to 4-0. That also marked the end for Jake Arrieta, who was replaced by Travis Wood. With one out, he gave up a pinch-hit single by Yasiel Puig, then walked Yasmani Grandal with two outs and was relieved by Justin Grimm, who closed the inning.

In the top of the seventh, Joe Blanton took over the Dodger-pitching for Rich Hill and retired the side.

Blanton's reliever Grant Dayton retired the first two batters he faced in the top of the eighth, but then gave up a double to Dexter Fowler. That brought in Kenley Jansen, who then ended the inning by striking out Kris Bryant.

The Dodgers answered with two more runs in its eighth at bat. With one out, Yasiel Puig singled and scored on a following double by Joc Pederson. The latter then stole third base and scored on a grounder by Yasmani Grandal to make it a 6-0 score.

In the top of the ninth, Jansen gave up an one-out single to Anthony Rizzo, but then struckout Javier Baez. That was followed by a line drive by Chris Coghlan, which was caught by third baseman Justin Turner to end the game.
