Rhinos captures title in Taiwan Series
Nederlands

BEITUN DISTRICT, TAICHUNG CITY (Taiwan) - EDA Rhinos is the champion of the Chinese Professional Baseball League. The team nipped Chinatrust Brothers 4-3 on Saturday-evening (October 29) to win the best-of-seven Taiwan Series, 4-2.

Rhinos, which was outhit 9-7, had lost the first two games, but then won the next four games. For the Rhinos, this was its first championship-title since 2005 and the third in franchise-history. The team also won the title in 2004, but in those years, the team was known as Sinon Bulls. Rhinos last played in the Taiwan Series in 2013, but then lost to Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions.

At Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium, the Rhinos trailed 3-1 in the top of the ninth, but then scored three runs to turn the game its way.

The Rhinos initially played as the Sinon Bulls in 1996-2012 in Taichung, after being founded in 1993 as Jungo Bears. After the team was purchased by the E-Da Corporation in 2013, the club moved to Kaohsiung. However, as its home stadium was under construction, the team played its homed games in Taoyuan City since August. In September, it was announced at a press conference that the club again changed owners and was purchased by Fubon Financial Holding Company, which also owns the Fubon Braves, which plays in the professional basketball league in Taiwan. The new owner takes over in the upcoming days. A new name or its home stadium for the 2017 season were not yet announced.

Game 6

Brothers took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off of starter Jared Lansford. With no outs and Cheng-Wei Chang and Chih-Hao Chang (both singles) on base, Chih-Hsien Chiang homered.

In the fourth inning, the Rhinos scored their first run on a double by Yi-Chuan Lin off of starter Nick Additon. He dominated in seven innings, striking out nine batters. However, after he had left, the Rhinos turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 lead.

In the top of the ninth, pinch-hitter Jian-Ming Zhang batted in a run with a double to make it a 3-2 score. Hereafter, a single by Xiao-Yi Gao tied the score. Moments later, the go-ahead run was scored on an error.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the suspense in the game raised again. Centerfielder Che-Hsuan Lin made a great diving catch, which was ruled an out and ended the game. The Rhinos started celebrating the victory and the championship, while fans littered the outfield with purple streamers to congratulate their heroes. However, a challenge followed! While the players continued celebrating, the umpires reviewed the play. It took several minutes, but then then call was overturned! That decision was correct, as the ball indeed touched the field, before it ended up in the glove on the diving Lin. With that, the batter was awarded first base with a single and the game continued! That gave the Brothers another change to do something back, but moments later, the game did finish when Chih-Hao Chang grounded out.

Che-Hsuan Lin was named the Most Valuable Player of the Series. Second baseman Wei-Ting Lin was named Best Fielder.
