Twins ends losing streak and records first victory
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - After having lost its first 13 consecutive games since the start of the season, De Glaskoning Twins finally entered the win-column of Saturday (May 20). Playing at home, Twins broke a 5-5 tie in the seventh inning and went on to win 9-7 against HCAW, which committed six errors. The series closes on Sunday at Bussum.

Twins opened the score in the third inning and led 5-2 after six innings, but HCAW then came alongside. In the seventh, Twins immediately re-took the lead, added three runs in the eighth and went on to win its first game of the season.

For the fourth time this season, Twins outhit its opponent, but this time, it also left the field victorious.

Nick Peels, who was the starting pitcher in the opener on Thursday, today played again in leftfield and was 3-for-5, scored twice and batted in a run. Menno Lenting, who entered the game as pinch-runner, had three RBI's.

Rossini Frolijk and Kevin Weijgertse had three basehits for HCAW, while Roelie Henrique batted in three runs.

With the loss, HCAW dropped to third place again and was passed by Curaçao Neptunus, which returned to second place.

Complete schedule

Twins got on base in both the first and second inning, but was held scoreless. In the first, Jamie Verheyleweghen led off with a single, but was eliminated in a double play. In the second, Gino Jonis (with one out) and Mick Molenaar (with two outs) both singled, but were left behind.

Twins then opened the score in the bottom of the third inning off of starter Kaj Timmermans. With one out, Jamie Verheyleweghen (who had reached on an fielder's choice) moved on a grounder by Bram Grooten and an infield-hit by Dennis De Quint, then scored when Melvin Perdue reached on an error.

Twins added two runs in the fourth. Nick Peels led off with a single, stole second base and advanced on an error. With one out, he scored on a single by Christopher Ge. The player with the shortest family name in the big league then also stole second and scored the next run when an outfield-error followed a single by Denzel Bryson. A second error on the same play enabled Bryson to reach third base, but he stranded there.

Rookie Mic van de Ven started for Twins and did very well. In the first four innings, the righthander allowed only one batter of HCAW to reach base. With two outs in the first inning, Van de Ven gave up a double to Vince Rooi, but a grounder ended the at bat.

Van de Ven then retired the side in the next three innings. After having retired ten consecutive batters, Van de Ven gave up a lead-off single to Rossini Frolijk in the fifth. The inning closed when a line drive by Rachid Engelhardt ended in a double play.

With a 3-0 lead, Van de Ven returned to the mound in the top of the sixth, but that probably was one inning too much, as he gave up two runs. Rowan van Hoek led off the inning for HCAW as pinch-hitter in his first game for the team since returning from the States after completion of his college-season. Van Hoek reached on an error and then Raoell Kortstam doubled. A run was then scored on a grounder by Roelie Henrique and Dylan Koster followed with a runscoring single to narrow the deficit to 3-2. That marked the end for Van de Ven, who was replaced by Jeremy Atkinson. The Australian pitcher closed the inning with a strikeout.

In its sixth at bat, Twins immediately reacted with two runs to take some more distance. The inning started the same as in the fourth. Nick Peels led off with a single, stole second base and moved on an error. Hereafter, Kaj Timmermans struckout the next two batters, but then gave up a runscoring single to Denzel Bryson. After the latter had stolen second base, he scored moments later on a single by Jamie Verheyleweghen to make it a 5-2 score. Bryson scored in a close play at the plate, which led to an argument from HCAW's Head Coach Roeland Henrique, who was ejected by Home Plate Umpire Jos van Eijsden. In the next inning, HCAW's 3B Coach Kevin Dirksen also was ejected for arguing balls-and-strikes. While Pitching Coach Richard Tensen then became the Acting Coach, it was pitcher Steven van Groningen, who took over the coaching at third base.

The lead was not enough, as HCAW came alongside in the top of the seventh. Rossini Frolijk led off with a single and Kevin Weijgertse doubled. The bases got loaded when Atkinson hit Rachid Engelhardt with a pitch. A run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rowan van Hoek. With two outs, the Australian pitcher gave up a 2-run double to Roelie Henrique that made it a 5-5 score. An error on a grounder by Dylan Koster led to runners on first and third base. They were left behind, but it was a new ball game.

Twins re-took the lead in the bottom of the seventh off of new pitcher Oscar Meuris. He walked Dennis De Quint and Melvin Perdue, who advanced on a grounder. A following single by Nick Peels gave Twins a 6-5 lead and led to runners on second and third base. Hereafter, Perdue, who was on third base, was eliminated by Meuris when he was off base after a comeback-grounder by Mick Molenaar. A line out ended the at bat, but Twins led again and this time for good. And that made Atkinson the pitcher-of-record.

With a 6-5 lead, Matthew Latta took over the pitching for Twins in the top of the eighth. With one out, the Belgian pitcher gave up a single to Rossini Frolijk and a double to Kevin Weijgertse. He was then replaced by Brendan Schoemaker, who got the bases loaded when he hit Rowan van Hoek with a pitch. The three runners were left behind, as Schoemaker closed with a strikeout.

Twins added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Lead-off hitter Denzel Bryson reached second base on an error and moved to third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, Meuris got the bases loaded when he walked Dennis De Quint and Melvin Perdue. That led to a pitching change, as Sedley Karel took over from Meuris. The bases were then cleared, as Menno Lenting followed with a 3-run triple to give Twins a 9-5 lead.

For Twins, the additional runs were important, as HCAW scored twice in the top of the ninth. Roelie Henrique led off with a walk and Vince Rooi singled with one out. Kevin Dirksen followed with a runscoring single, ad did Kevin Weijgertse with two outs. With runners on first and third base Brendan Schoemaker closed the inning and the game with a strikeout to earn a save.
