HCAW records small win against Twins
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW recorded a small 3-1 win against last-placed De Glaskoning Twins on Thursday-evening (July 27). For Twins, this was its first game in just over a month, as it last played on June 25 against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. After that series, the season was interrupted for the World Port Tournament. The season resumed again on July 13 with a 3-game series between Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus. A week later, on July 20, the other teams resumed their season, but in that round, it was Twins, who had no games scheduled due to the fact that there are only seven teams in the big league this season.

HCAW took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and led only 2-1 after seven innings, but then added an insurance run in the eighth. The game was played at the site of HCAW in Bussum, due to the lighting conditions at the home site of Twins in Oosterhout.

Despite the win, HCAW was eliminated for second place, as Neptunus also won tonight. This means that HCAW will finish the regular season in third or fourth place. For HCAW, the series against Twins is its final series of the regular season. The series continues coming Saturday in Bussum.

With tonight's loss, Twins will close the regular season in either sixth or seventh place. Because of the result of this game, as well as the win of Neptunus against Pickles UVV, DSS will finish the regular season in fifth place. DSS has no games scheduled in this round.

Complete schedule

HCAW opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Jan Evertse. Initially, righthander Mic van de Ven was named as starting pitcher for Twins, but Head Coach Kevin Roovers switched to Evertse instead. Evertse made his fourth and final start of the season on May 5 against L&D Amsterdam Pirates. Hereafter, he was used in relief in eleven games.

Evertse had the lowest ERA (6.02) of the Twins-staff, but the righthander gave up two earned runs in the first at bat. He gave up a lead-off single to Delano Selassa, who moved on a sacrifice bunt by Roelie Henrique. The bases then got loaded when Evertse hit Kevin Dirksen with a pitch and walked Vince Rooi. The first run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rachid Engelhardt. The bases were re-loaded when Rowan van Hoek reached on an infield-hit and Seb Visser then followed with a runscoring single to make it a 2-0 score. Three runners were left behind when Kevin Weijgertse grounded out.

Twins cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Jim Ploeger, who got some fine support from the bullpen late in the game. The at bat almost started the same as HCAW's at bat. Jamie Verheyleweghen led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Peels. Hereafter, Dennis De Quint walked. Melvin Perdue then followed with a runscoring single, which brought in Verheyleweghen. De Quint tried to advance to third base on the hit, but was eliminated there on a throw from centerfielder Boyd Tuhumury. A flyout ended the at bat.

In the following innings, Twins got some runners in scoring position, but was held scoreless.

In the third, Bart Janssen led off for Twins with a double, but was left behind. With two outs in the fourth, Chris Ge walked and Bob van der Meer singled, but also stranded.

HCAW got its next runner in scoring position in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Kevin Weijgertse (fielder's choice) was on first base. He moved on a wild pitch, but stranded on second base.

In the sixth inning, Japanese righthander Daisuke Yamashita took over the pitching for Twins. He retired the side in the fifth, then saw HCAW get close to a run in the seventh. With one out, Boyd Tuhumuy (who had reached on a fielder's choice) stole second and reached third on a flyout, but then was left behind.

HCAW then added an insurance run in the top of the eighth off of new pitcher Ibo Redan. With two outs, Rachid Engelhardt singled and scored on a following double by Rowan van Hoek to make it a 3-1 score.

Twins also got a runner in scoring position again in the bottom of the eighth. Tair Vrutaal was hit by a pitch from new pitcher Tim Niekerk, then moved on a grounder, but stranded on second base.

In the bottom of the ninth, Oscar Meuris closed for HCAW. He gave up a lead-off single to Gino Jonis, followed with a strikeout, then a double play ended the game.
