HCAW hands Neptunus biggest shutout-loss
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - HCAW opened the second 3-game series of the Championship Pool against Curaçao Neptunus on Thursday-evening (August 30) with a big 13-0 shutout-victory in seven innings. Last week, in the opening series of the 9-game Championship Pool, HCAW won one of its three games against L&D Amsterdam Pirates, while Neptunus swept De Glaskoning Twins.

With the 13-0 win, HCAW handed Neptunus its biggest shutout-loss. Neptunus is not used to losing big or suffer 10-run difference losses. Since 1983, this was only the twelfth 10-run difference loss for the Rotterdam-squad. Seven of these games were played in the regular season. Four of the losses came during a Holland Series, including a big 17-7 against Amsterdam Pirates in 2014. Remarkable enough, eight of the 10-run losses came at its home-site in Rotterdam. The biggest 10-run difference away-loss dates from April 26, 1997 when Neptunus lost 18-7 at Hoofddorp Pioniers.

In July last year, Neptunus suffered its previous biggest shutout, losing 12-0 to Amsterdam Pirates. The 13 runs were the most given up by Neptunus since July 4, 2015 when the team lost 19-2 to Hoofddorp Pioniers. The most runs given up by Neptunus is 22. That was done on May 20, 1984 when Neptunus lost 22-12 at home against Haarlem Nicols.

It was the second time that HCAW handed Neptunus a 10-run difference loss. The first was was recorded 20 years ago, on September 25, 1998 when HCAW won 10-0 in eight innings during the Holland Series.

It is the first time this season that Neptunus was shutout by an opponent. Last season, Neptunus was shutout twice.

HCAW struck with three runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Diegomar Markwell. For the lefthander, this was his first loss of the year. In the regular season, he stayed unbeaten and was 11-0.

In the first inning, Markwell gave up a lead-off single to Jeandro Tromp, who then was awarded second base on a balk. He moved when next hitter Delano Selassa singled and scored on a grounder by Roelie Henrique. Next batter Vince Rooi walked and Kevin Weijgertse followed with a runscoring single. A throwing error on a force play-grounder by Seb Visser made it a 3-0 score. With runners on first and third base, Markwell recovered, struckout the next two batters, but faced a 3-0 deficit.

HCAW added three more runs in the third inning. With two outs, Julian Goins delivered an RBI-double, then Denzel Bryson followed with a 2-run single.

In the fourth at bat, HCAW again scored three runs, again with two outs. With one out, Roelie Henrique doubled and scored with two outs on a single by Kevin Weijgertse. That led to a pitching change, as Jiorgeny Casimiri took over from Diegomar Markwell. While leaving the mound, Markwell said something toward Home Plate Umpire Winfried Berkvens, probably regarding his strikezone, and was ejected. Casimiri gave up a single to Seb Visser, then uncorked two wild pitches, which led to another run and gave up a runscoring single to Berend Ruben that lifted the lead to 9-0.

HCAW increased the lead to 11-0 in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two unearned runs. Two more runs were the added in the top of the seventh off of Taylor Clemensia, who had taken over in the previous inning. Delano Selassa led off with a walk, then scored with one out when veteran Vince Rooi homered. With two outs, HCAW's Head Coach Roeland Henrique inserted rookie Dakota van der Heyde as pinch-hitter. After having made his debut in the main-squad a week ago (hitting 0-for-1), Van der Heyde now connected for a single, then moved when next hitter Berend Ruben also singled, but a flyout ended the at bat.

HCAW collected 15 basehits, including three by Kevin Weijgertse. Delano Selassa and Vince Rooi both scored three runs. Rooi also batted in three.

Chris Pfau had a strong performance for HCAW. The lefthanded American went the distance for the Bussum-squad, threw 100 pitches in seven innings, struckout six hitters and gave up only four basehits. He allowed Neptunus to get into scoring position only twice.

Trailing 6-0, Neptunus got some baserunners in the bottom of the third inning. Ruendrick Piternella led off with a walk, but was forced out on a close call at second base that followed on a grounder by Greg Muller. Stijn van der Meer followed with a single. The inning then ended when Benjamin Dille grounded into a double play.

With two outs in the fifth, Ruendrick Piternella doubled, but Pfau closed with a strikeout. The lefthander gave up a lead-off single to Stijn van der Meer in the sixth, but he was forced out. Hereafter, the defensive highlight of the evening followed. Dwayne Kemp drilled the ball into deep leftfeld for what appeared the be a homerun. There, leftfielder Berend Ruben jumped up and caught the ball just in front of the scoreboard against the yellow line on top of the outfield-fence. When Ruben had not caught the ball, it probably would not have left the field, but instead would have hit the yellow line or just below that.

With a 13-0 lead, Pfau retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to end the lopsided game.
