Amsterdam Pirates again wins big against DSS
Nederlands

AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates recorded another convincing victory on Saturday (May 4), winning 13-5 at home against DSS. It was a chilly day with an average temperature of 9,4 degrees Celsius (48,9 F), but with a windchill of 4,4 C (39,9 F). Besides that, there were some strong winds.

In the opener on Thursday-evening, Amsterdam Pirates recorded a huge 20-1 victory in a game that saw some baseball-history. In that game, Amsterdam led 3-0 after four innings, but then produced two big rallies, scoring nine runs in the fifth inning, then eight more in the sixth at bat to lift the lead to 20-0!

Today was National Memorial Day in the Netherlands. On May 4, there are several Memorials throughout the country. At 8 PM, the National Memorial takes place at the National Monument at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.

In several previous seasons when May 4 was also a day in the weekend, games started earlier. Not only to finish the game in time, but also to enable those who wanted to attend Memorials to do so.

Today, only HCAW had moved up its starting time to 1 PM, instead of 2:30 PM. The home-games of Curaçao Neptunus and L&D Amsterdam Pirates started at their regular time of 2:00 PM. Twins Oosterhout moved up its starting time up 30 minutes to 2:30 PM. Remarkable enough, there were a few games in lower divisions that started their game today at 6 PM.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

In today's game, Amsterdam Pirates collected 17 basehits, including three by Gilmer Lampe, which were all doubles. The leftfielder also scored three runs and batted in three. Niels van Weert also scored three runs. All nine players in the Amsterdam line-up collected at least one basehit. Seven of them scored at least once.

After Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek had retired the side in the top of the first inning, the home-team rallied for three runs on four hits in the bottom of the first off of DSS-starter Alexander Valdez. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Roelie Henrique, who stole second base, but then was unable to advance on an infield-hit to short by next batter Niels van Weert. The two runners moved on a passed ball, then scored on a following double by Gilmer Lampe. Hereafter, Kenny Berkenbosch delivered a runscoring single to make it a 3-0 score. Berkenbosch was forced out on a grounder by Linoy Croes, who then moved on a grounder by Delano Selassa. Croes advanced to third base on an infield-hit by Kit Gijsbers, who hit a grand slam-homerun in his first big league-at bat in last Thursday's game. Croes and Gijsbers stranded when a flyout closed the inning. Gijsbers was the designated hitter in today's game, as the team had to do without Denzel Richardson, due to an injury.

DSS got into scoring position for the first time in the second inning. With two outs, Devano Pieter singled and Mitchel Dautzenberg walked, but were left behind.

Amsterdam Pirates then added two more runs in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Niels van Weert singled and Gilmer Lampe hit his second double in two innings. Both scored on a single by Kenny Berkenbosch, who himself ended up on second base on an outfield-error. He then advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but stranded there.

After the Amsterdam-defense had turned a double play in the top of the third inning, the team scored three more runs in its third at bat. Kit Gijsbers led off with a single, but hereafter, the game was briefly interrupted by hail. With his basehit, Gijsbers had now hit a basehit in his first three at bats in the big league. When the game resumed, he stole second base, but stayed there on an infield-hit to short by Victor Draijer. Both scored on a following triple by Max Clarijs, who then scored himself when Roelie Henrique doubled. He stranded on second base, as the next three batters all grounded out.

Trailing 8-0, DSS got one run back in the fourth, but left three runners behind. Ibrahin Redan led off with a single and Aldi Guzman was hit by a pitch. The bases got loaded when Devano Pieter singled with one out. Next batter Mitchel Dautzenberg also singled to bring in Redan and kept the bases loaded. But the three runners were left behind when Kevin Heijstek struckout the next two batters.

DSS scored two more runs in the top of the sixth. This time, it was Aldi Guzman who led off with a single. Hereafter, Leandro Anasagasti also singled. A wild pitch followed and that enabled Guzman to score from second base, while Anasagasti ended up on third base. With one out, he scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitchel Dautzenberg.

In the bottom of the sixth, off of new pitcher Ben Neijndorff, Amsterdam scored its ninth run, but also left three runners behind. With one out, Linoy Croes hit a double and moved on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Delano Selassa. The bases got loaded when Kit Gijsbers and (with two outs) Max Clarijs both walked. Lars Werkman then took over the pitching and got an inning-ending flyout.

DSS narrowed the deficit to 9-5 by scoring twice in the top of the seventh off of reliever Jhan Rifaela. Lead-off hitter Diamond Silberie reached on an error and scored on an one-out single by Tino van Erk. The bases then got loaded when Rifaela walked Ibrahin Redan and Aldi Guzman. Next, the lefthander gave up a runscoring single to Leandro Anasagasti. Three runners were left behind when a flyout and line out closed the at bat.

Amsterdam Pirates took more distance by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Niels van Weert led off with a walk, then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Gilmer Lampe. After the two had advanced on a wild pitch, the bases got loaded when Kenny Berkenbosch walked. With two outs, Moreno Vork took over the pitching, but he gave up a sacrifice fly to Delano Selassa. With runners at the corners, Lampe scored the next run in a double-steal situation. The inning ended when Kit Gijsbers struckout.

Pirates lifted the lead to 13-5 by scoring two more runs in the eighth. Victor Draijer led off with a double and scored on an one-out single by Roelie Henrique. After next batter Niels van Weert had walked, Henrique scored on a the third double in this game by Gilmer Lampe.

Maickel Rietel then pitched the top of the ninth inning for Amsterdam Pirates. With one out, he gave up a single to Aldi Guzman, but then got a flyout and a groundout that ended the game.
