HCAW and Hoofddorp Pioniers play first scoreless tie in 17 years
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - The game between HCAW and Hoofddorp Pioniers on Saturday (May 4) ended in a scoreless tie after 12 innings. It was the first time in almost 17 years that a game in the highest league ended with an 0-0 score.

The last time that a game ended with a scoreless tie in 12 innings in the big league was on August 10, 2002. Back then, it was done by HCAW and Neptunus.

The opening game of the 3-game series on Thursday-evening, also ended in a tie, this time a 6-6 score in a game that ended after ten innings due to the curfew-rule.

Today was National Memorial Day in the Netherlands. On May 4, there are several Memorials throughout the country. At 8 PM, the National Memorial takes place at the National Monument at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.

In several previous seasons when May 4 was also a day in the weekend, games started earlier. Not only to finish the game in time, but also to enable those who wanted to attend Memorials to do so.

Today, only HCAW had moved up its starting time to 1 PM, instead of 2:30 PM. The home-games of Curaçao Neptunus and L&D Amsterdam Pirates started at their regular time of 2:00 PM. Twins Oosterhout moved up its starting time up 30 minutes to 2:30 PM. Remarkable enough, there were a few games in lower divisions that started their game today at 6 PM.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

In today's game, Pioniers outhit HCAW 6-5.

Both teams got several runners in scoring position, but were unable to score. Pioniers stranded seven runners, four in scoring position. HCAW left ten runners behind, including six in scoring position.

For Pioniers, a runner who tried to score on a single was eliminated at the plate in the fifth inning. In the 12th, the team had a runner on third base with one out, but then two strikeouts followed.

For HCAW, an attempt to advance from first to third base on a wild pitch ended in an out on third base in the 7th inning. In the 10th, there were three runners on base, then a force play at the plate was made. Three runners were left behind. In the 11th, another runner was eliminated at the plate.

Hoofddorp Pioniers got its first scoring opportunity in the top of the second inning. Mervin Gario led off with a double off of starter Kaj Timmermans and moved to third base on a grounder. But a strikeout and groundout followed.

Pioniers also got the next scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. With one out, Joey de Koning and Jorrit Penseel both walked. De Koning then tried to score from second base on a single by next batter Damian Melis, but was elimimated at the plate on a nice throw from centerfielder Jeandro Tromp. With runners on second and third base, the inning ended with a pop-fly.

HCAW got into scoring position for the first time in the bottom of the sixth. Pioniers-starter Lars Huijer retired nine batters in a row from the second through fifth inning. With one out in the sixth, the righthander gave up a single to Jeandro Tromp, who stole second base with two outs. He then moved to third base when Oliver van der Wijst Severino reached on an error. After the latter also had stolen second base, the inning ended with a comeback-grounder.

In the bottom of the seventh, Patrick Bok walked for HCAW with two outs. Moments later, he tried to advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but was eliminated.

After the game had been halted for nine minutes due to hail, both teams got another chance to do some scoring in the ninth inning.

In the top of the ninth, Raul Jacobs and Nolan Beugeling both singled with one out for Pioniers. Jacobs moved to third base on a force play-grounder, but then was left behind.

In the bottom of the ninth, off of new pitcher Paul Kirkpatrick, Oliver van der Wijst Severino singled with one out, moved on a grounder, but stranded on second base.

HCAW got its biggest chance to decide the game in the bottom of the tenth inning when it got the bases loaded with no outs. Leaf-off hitter Seb Visser reached on an error and was awarded second base on a balk. To set up a force play, next batter Patrick Bok was walked intentionally. No out was made on a following sacrifice bunt/fielder's choice by Renaigel Martis, which loaded the bases. Hereafter, Visser was forced out at the plate on a grounder by pinch-hitter Arthur Lugtmeijer. A strikeout and flyout then ended the inning and so, three runners were left behind and the game continued with a scoreless tie.

HCAW got another chance in the eleventh. Oliver van der Wijst Severino led off with a single and stole second. With first base open, again, a force play was again created via an intentional walk, this time for Rodney Daal. Van der Wijst moved to third base on a wild pitch, then Daal stole second base. This time, it was not opted to set up a force play and so, first base remained open. Next, Van der Wijst was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder to short by Ruendrick Piternella. With runners on first and second base, Paul Kirkpatrick struckout the next two batters to end the inning.

Pioniers left a runner behind on third base in the top of twelfth inning. Mervin Gario led off with a single and stole second base, then moved to third base on a grounder. This time, HCAW-reliever Jiorgeny Casimiri struckout the next two batters to close the at bat.

HCAW was then retired in order in the bottom of the twelfth and so, the game ended with a rare scoreless tie.
