Twins shuts out Hoboken Pioneers in Belgium
Nederlands

HOBOKEN (Belgium) - Twins Oosterhout played its first exhibition game of the season on Saturday (March 9). The team traveled to Hoboken, which since 1983 is a district of Antwerp, in Belgium and there, Twins recorded a 12-0 shutout-win against Hoboken Pioneers. The teams were scheduled to play another game on Sunday at Oosterhout, but that has been cancelled.

In the Netherlands, it was a cloudy, windy and sometimes rainy day, but in Belgium, the weather conditions were acceptable.

Also on Saturday, HCAW played its second exhibition game. At home, the Bussum-squad hosted Solingen Alligators from Germany and lost 4-1 in a 7-inning game.
Recap of the HCAW vs. Solingen game

The weather conditions led to two cancellations of games involving big league-teams.

At Amersfoort, the game between Quick Amersfoort and RCH-Pinguïns went underway, but was halted due to inclement weather conditions after three innings. At that moment, Quick led 3-1. At Hoofddorp, Meerlease Pioniers was scheduled to play against its second team, Omron Pioniers, but that game was scheduled due to the unfavorable weather conditions making the field not available to play on. Last week, today's scheduled game in Amsterdam between L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus already was dropped from the schedule. These two teams were scheduled to play tomorrow in Rotterdam, but today, it was decided to also cancel that game.

At Hoboken, the weather was somewhat better than in the Netherlands. It was sometimes cold, it stayed dry the entire day and so, it was possible for host Hoboken Pioneers and visiting Twins Oosterhout to play a complete 9-inning game. While Twins took a 10-run difference, it was decided to play nine innings, as the weather conditions for Sunday were unfavorable. It also was decided to drop Sunday's game in Oosterhout from the schedule.

By playing nine innings, the pitchers of both teams got an opportunity to throw somewhat. Jeffrey Arends, the debuting Head Coach of Twins, used all seven pitchers on his roster.

Twins had a productive day and also recorded several extra-basehits. Dennis De Quint and newcomer Joshua Zara both had two doubles. Brian Biezen hit a solo-homerun.

This season, Biezen will play with another uniform number. Last year, he played with 33, which was the number of Jeffrey Arends not only when he played for Twins, but also in his entire career. Now that Arends is back in uniform, he will have 33 again on his back. Biezen will play with number 10, which also was his number when he played for Sparta-Feyenoord and UVV.

Last season, Biezen broke the record for Most Triples in a single-season at the highest level. The outfielder hit eight triples in the regular season to break the record which was held by five different players. In 1983, Marcel Joost (Haarlem Nicols) set the record with seven. That was then tied by Robert Eenhoorn (Haarlem Nicols, 1988), Johnny Balentina (Neptunus, 1998), Elton Wilson (Hoofddorp Pioniers, 1999) and Shaldimar Daantji (Neptunus, 2016).
