Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus shutout Hoofddorp Pioniers 6-0 on Sunday (May 12) to complete a 3-game sweep.

Both teams collected eight basehits, but Neptunus rallied for four runs in the fifth inning.

In the opener on Thursday-evening, Neptunus won 9-2 in a game that was shortened by rain.

On Saturday, Neptunus won only 2-0 in its second game. Neptunus scored two unearned runs in the fourth inning, then faced a bases loaded, no outs situation in the bottom of the ninth. But Neptunus survived.

Hoofddorp Pioniers got a runner on third base in the top of the first inning, but failed to score. Mark Smit led off with a single off of starter Misja Harcksen, but was forced out on a bunt by Raul Jacobs, who later stranded on third base. In the remainder of the game, the team left five more runners behind in scoring position.

In the bottom of the first inning, Neptunus opened the score off of starter Lars Broersen. It took a while before the at bat went underway, as there was some repair needed at the pitching mound. After a 5-minute delay, the game resumed. With one out, Benjamin Dille was hit by a pitch, then Dwayne Kemp walked. With two outs, Dille scored on a single by Dudley Leonora.

After being retired in order in the second inning, Pioniers got another runner on third base in the third. With two outs, Mark Smit singled, stole second base and moved on a passed ball, but was left behind.

In the fourth, Pioniers had runners on first and second base with one out. This time, a double play ended the at bat. In the fifth, another runner was left behind on second base.

Neptunus was retired in order in the second and third inning, then added a run in the fourth. With one out, Dudley Leonora walked, who then stole second base and scored on a 2-out double by Quintin De Cuba. When next batter Greg Muller was hit by a pitch, a pitching change followed. Paul Kirkpatrick, who mostly was used later in the game, was inserted to take over from Lars Broersen. He got a force play-grounder that ended the inning.

But in the fifth, the British/American righthander ran into problems and gave up four runs in an inning that saw three different pitchers. Stijn van der Meer and Benjamin Dille opened with singles, then the bases got loaded when Dwayne Kemp walked. A run was then scored on a wild pitch and two more were added on an one-out double by Dudley Leonora. Hereafter, Paul Kirkpatrick was relieved by Nathan Diaby. He saw Leonora advance on a wild pitch, then score on a grounder by Shaldimar Daantji. Diaby then got the bases loaded when he walked Quintin De Cuba, Greg Muller and Jochem Koedijk. Another pitching change followed. Daniel Vos took over and got an inning-ending grounder, meaning Neptunus stranded three runners. But Neptunus now led 6-0.

In the top of the sixth, Pioniers got another scoring opportunity when Raul Jacobs led off with a double and Nolan Beugeling singled. With runners at the corners, a pop-fly and a double play followed. In the bottom of the sixth, it was Neptunus that left runners behind on first and third base.

In the top of the seventh, Brendan Schoemaker took over the Neptunus-pitching. With one out, he gave up a single to Duco Nuijten and hit Damian Melis with a pitch, but they were also left behind.

Pioniers also went to the bullpen again in the bottom of the seventh. Nick Loos took over and walked lead-off hitter Quintin De Cuba, who advanced on a wild pitch. Later, a double play ended the inning.

Neptunus failed to add another run in its eighth inning. With two outs, the team had runners on second and third base, but a grounder ended the at bat.

In the top of the ninth, Pioniers got its final baserunner off of Elton Koeiman, who had taken over in the eighth. With two outs, Duco Nuijten reached on an infield-hit, but a grounder ended the game.
