Pioniers shuts out HCAW to win Tournament
Nederlands

HEEMSTEDE (Neth.) - Meerlease Pioniers is the winner of the fifth edition of the annual Ringvaart Tournament. On Sunday (March 24), the team from Hoofddorp won 3-0 in the Final against HCAW, which had won the event last year. A year ago, the second day of the tournament had to be cancelled due to rain. HCAW was then named tournament-winner based on the results on the day before.

Pioniers became the fifth different winner since the first edition was organized in 2015. Back then, The Hawks became the first winner. Thereafter, the tournament was won by Sparks Haarlem (2016), Storks (2017) and HCAW (2018).

Day 2 of the tournament began with the two remaining games from the preliminary round, which were decisive to determine the two finalists. All four participants were still able to reach the Final. Also, there were two scenarios that could result in a 3-way tie to determine one or both finalists. With that, the final scores of these two remaining games could be decisive to serve as a tie-breaker.

That didn't happen. In today's first game, Meerlease Pioniers shutout Silicon Storks, 3-0. With that, Storks was eliminated for the Final. Pioniers had to wait for the outcome of the next game, as that also could create a 3-way tie.

That also didn't happen, as HCAW outscored host RCH-Pinguïns, 6-1. With that, HCAW remained unbeaten and reached the Final. Because of the loss, RCH-Pinguïns was eliminated, a 3-way tie was not possible anymore and so, Pioniers was the second finalist.

The game for third and fourth place between RCH-Pinguïns and Silicon Storks ended in a scoreless tie. With that, both teams finished in a tie for third place.

Final Standings:
1. Meerlease Pioniers, 2. HCAW, 3. RCH-Pinguïns/Silicon Storks.

Gilian van Lith started for Pioniers and gave up only one basehit in the three innings he pitched. The lefthander gave up his lone basehit in the first inning. Pioniers collected eight basehits, including two by Mark Smit, Joey Eeman and Jorrit Penseel.

In the top of the first inning, rookie Milo Botman led off for Storks with a single. He came into scoring position when Krisztian Toth walked with one out. When next batter Luuk Visser flied out, Botman advanced to third base. However, on the throw to third base, Toth tried to move to second base, but he was eliminated there to complete an inning-ending double play. Botman's basehit remained the lone one for Storks.

In the next four innings, Storks would get several baserunners, four of them walked. But the team stranded five runners, three of them in scoring position. In the final two innings, Storks got one baserunner off of rookie Nathan Diaby.

Pioniers left a runner behind on third base in its first at bat off of Darryl Jamoena, who in 2017 played himself for the team from Hoofddorp. With two outs, Joey Eeman doubled and advanced when Tyler Boersma reached on an error, but the two were left behind.

Pioniers then opened the score with two runs in the second inning. Joey de Koning led off with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Jaison Gijsbertha. The team got runners at the corners when next batter Duco Nuijten reached on an infield-hit. De Koning scored the opening run on a sacrifice fly by Raul Jacobs, then Nuijten scored the next run on a double by Mark Smit.

In the fourth inning, Smit hit a triple with two outs off of new pitcher Stephon Mohamed, but stranded on third base.

Pioniers added its third run in the fifth inning off of José Moreno. Joey Eeman led off with a single, moved to third base on a single by Jorrit Penseel and scored when Joey de Koning reached on an error.

Game 6 - RCH-Pinguïns vs. HCAW
The final game of the preliminary round could create a 3-way tie in case RCH-Pinguïns should have won. In that situation, the score of this game would become important, a run-difference rule is been used as a tie-breaker. But HCAW recorded a convincing 6-1 victory and with that, it decided the ranking for the final two games. With its win, HCAW reached the Final. And because RCH-Pinguïns now was eliminated, Meerlease Pioniers became the second finalist.
