Amsterdam Pirates opens series vs. Twins Oosterhout with big win
Nederlands

ROSMALEN (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates opened its 3-game series against Twins Oosterhout on Thursday-evening (April 25) with a big 14-1 win in seven innings.

Amsterdam collected 14 basehits, including a grand slam homerun by Kenny Berkenbosch.

With a 4-0 lead, Amsterdam added ten runs in the three middle innings of the game that was played at the site of Gryphons in Rosmalen. Twins plays its evening home-games in Rosmalen, as its light-installation on its home-site in Oosterhout is not sufficient enough for the big league.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score quickly in the top of the first inning off of Yuto Onodera, who made his first start for Twins. With one out, the Japanese lefthander walked Max Clarijs and Gilmer Lampe, then got the bases loaded when Denzel Richardson reached on an infield-hit. All three scored when next batter Kenny Berkenbosch hit a grand slam homerun. Berkenbosch was 3-for-5 tonight, scored twice and batted in five runs. Delano Selassa followed with a double and Linoy Croes walked, but they were left behind.

Twins got one run back in its first at bat off of Nick Veltkamp, who was the unscheduled starting pitcher for Amsterdam. Initially, veteran righthander Rob Cordemans was named as starting pitcher. A week ago, he became the first pitcher in history with 2,000 career strikeout. He was then hit on his leg by a comeback line drive by the next batter, but stayed in the game. But out of precaution, he didn't start tonight to give him an additional week to recover from a sore leg.

Veltkamp, like Onodera a lefthander, walked lead-off hitter Joshua Zara, then an error was made on a force play-grounder by Stijn Janssens. The two moved on a grounder by Christopher Ge. Moments later, Zara scored on a passed ball. With Janssens at third base, Veltkamp struckout the next batter, then a flyout ended the inning.

Amsterdam Pirates scored four more runs in the fourth inning on five basehits. Victor Draijer led off with an infield-hit and Niels van Weert reached on a bunt-single. With two outs, both scored on a double by Gilmer Lampe, who scored himself on a triple by next batter Denzel Richardson. That marked the end of the evening for Onodera, who was replaced by Mic van de Ven. He was greeted with a runscoring single by Kenny Berkenbosch, which lifted the lead to 8-1.

Another run was added in the fifth. Linoy Croes led off with a walk. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Roelie Henrique and Max Clarijs also walked. A wild pitch then enabled Croes to score.

The 10-run difference (and more) was reached in the top of the sixth. This time, the productive Pirates-team rallied for five runs. Again, the bases got loaded quickly. Lead-off hitter Denzel Richardson was hit by a pitch, Kenny Berkenbosch followed with a single and Delano Selassa walked. That also led to another pitching change. Rookie Koen Postelmans took over, but he also was unable to stop the Amsterdam-offense. He gave up a sacrifice fly to Linoy Croes, which enabled Richardson to score his third run tonight. Next, the bases got loaded again when he walked Victor Draijer. The next run was scored on a passed ball and the bases were re-loaded when Niels van Weert also walked. Hereafter, Roelie Henrique cleared the bases with a 3-run double to make it a 14-1 score.

After scoring in the first inning, Twins got a runner in scoring position in the next four innings, but was unable to add more runs.

In the second, Nick Peels doubled with one out, but stranded on second base. In the third, Joshua Zara led off with a double, then the next three batters were retired. With two outs in the fifth, Nick Peels reached on an error and Jerzy van Gool singled, then Nick Veltkamp closed with a strikeout.

And in the fifth, Stijn Janssens doubled with one out, but also didn't get beyond second base.

In the sixth, Mike Groen became the new Amsterdam-pitcher. He gave up a single in the sixth and seventh inning, but both runners stranded on first base.
