HCAW outhit, but homers to win against Quick Amersfoort
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW took an early lead, but in the end nipped Quick Amersfoort 3-2 on Thursday-evening (April 25).

HCAW was outhit 7-5 by Quick Amersfoort, but two of its basehits were homeruns that accounted for three runs.

HCAW led 3-0 after four innings, but was held scoreless in the remainder of the game. Quick Amersfoort, whose Head Coach Glenn Romney was not with the team tonight, then scored twice in the sixth, but that was to be it.

Both teams were retired in order in the first inning, then got their first baserunner in the second at bat. For Quick Amersfoort, Rowan van Hoek singled with two outs, but stranded on first base. For HCAW, Rodney Daal led with a walk, but was eliminated in a double play that was started on a bunt by Patrick Bok.

In the top of the third inning, Quick got another baserunner. This time, Joran Berkhout reached on an infield-hit with two outs. HCAW-starter Chris Pfau then closed with a strikeout, just as he had done in the previous inning.

In its third at bat, HCAW opened the score off Colin van Laar, who went the distance for Quick Amersfoort. Ruendrick Piternella connected well on the fifth pitch he saw and hit his first big league-homerun to put HCAW ahead. With one out, Norbert Jongerius reached on a bunt-single, stole second base and advanced on a grounder, but was left behind.

After Chris Pfau had retired the side in the top of the fourth (two strikeouts), HCAW added two runs in the home-half. Oliver van der Wijst Severino led off with a walk, then scored when Rodney Daal homered. All three players who scored for HCAW in this game didn't play for the team last season. Piternella played for Curaçao Neptunus (and mostly for Tridents), Rodney Daal came to Bussum from L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Oliver van der Wijst Severino played for Meerlease Pioniers.

After Daal's homerun, HCAW got a chance to add another run. With one out, Arthur Lugtmeijer doubled and Ruendrick Piternella walked. The two moved on a grounder, but then were left behind.

In the fifth, Quick got an opportunity to do something back when it got its first runner in scoring position. With one out, Sam van der Ploeg and Jordy Burger (bunt) singled, but a force play and foul-out followed.

In the sixth, Quick was more successful and narrowed the deficit to 3-2. Jules Cremer led off with a single, then moved to third base on a following single by Rachid Engelhardt, who ended up on second base. The bases got loaded when Chris Pfau hit Bryan Engelhardt with a pitch. Next batter Taylor Clemensia grounded into a double play, but that also brought in Cremer. Moments later, Rachid Engelhardt scored when a pick-off to third base by the catcher ended in a throwing error.

HCAW didn't get another runner in scoring position from the sixth inning on, but Quick did so in both the eighth and ninth inning.

In the top of the eighth, Oscar Meuris took over from Chris Pfau (who struckout 11 batters), but he walked lead-off hitter Jules Cremer, then hit next batter Rachid Engelhardt with a pitch. A foul-out accounted for the first out, then Meuris followed with a strikeout. With two outs, Arij Fransen took over the pitching and the rookie closed with a strikeout.

But in the top of the ninth, Fransen encountered some problems. He gave up a lead-off single to Sam van der Ploeg, who moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jordy Burger. Hereafter, Kevin Windster Adelina walked. Fransen followed with a strikeout, but then made a throwing error during a pick-off at scond base, enabling Van der Ploeg to reach third base. With runners now at first and third base, Fransen closed with a strikeout to earn his third save.
