Neptunus scores late in shutout against DSS
Nederlands

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Curaçao Neptunus opened its 3-game series against DSS on Thursday-evening (April 25) with a 6-0 shutout-victory.

Neptunus decided the game late, as it was held scoreless itself in the first six innings. The home-team then rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a decisive lead.

It is not the first time this season that Neptunus scores late in a game to turn it around in its favor.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

In the first six innings of the game, Neptunus got only five baserunners, four on a basehit. Only one of them got into scoring position, which was done in the sixth inning.

DSS didn't do much better. In these six innings, the Haarlem-team saw seven batters reach base, four of them on a basehit. Like Neptunus, it got its first runner in scoring position in the sixth inning.

For DSS, lead-off hitter Devano Pieter reached on an error in the top of the first inning, but was forced out. A double play then ended the at bat.

The Neptunian defense also turned a double play in the second and third inning.

DSS was retired in order in the fourth and fifth at bat, then became the first team to get a runner into scoring position in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Runai Coran and Mitchel Dautzenberg singled off of starter Diegomar Markwell. But with runners on first and second base, an infield-fly and a force out followed.

DSS-starter Juan Carlos Sulbaran retired the side in the first inning. The righthander gave up an one-out single to Leandro Anasagasti in the second ining, but then it was the DSS-defense that turned a double play.

In the third inning, Shaldimar Daantji led off for Neptunus with an infield-hit, but he was caught stealing. In the fifth, Neptunus got its lead-off hitter on base again. Gianison Boekhoudt led off with a walk, but he also was caught stealing. This time, it ended the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, with two outs, Jochem Koedijk and Stijn van der Meer singled to put runners on first and third base. They stranded when a flyout closed the at bat.

DSS then left another runner behind in the top of the seventh inning. Moments later, Neptunus struck with five runs with two outs to take a decisive lead. With one out, Gianison Boekhoudt doubled. With two outs, he scored the first run on a single by Quintin De Cuba. Hereafter, Shaldimar Daantji also singled and the bases got loaded when Julian Goins was hit by a pitch. Jochem Koedijk followed with a 2-run single, which led to a pitching change. Lars Werkman took over for Sulbaran, but he walked Stijn van der Meer, which loaded the bases again. The next run was added when Benjamin Dille reached on an error, then Koedijk scored the fifth run on a wild pitch.

Neptunus turned its fourth double play in the game in the eighth, then added a run in the home-half of the at bat, also with two outs. Ben Neijndorff became the new pitcher for DSS and he saw Dudley Leonora reach on an error and Quintin De Cuba hit a single with one out. The two advanced on a flyout, which was followed by an outfield-error, which led to the run. The bases got loaded when Neijndorff walked Julian Goins and Jochem Koedijk, but three runners were left behind.

Kevin Kelly pitched the ninth inning for Neptunus. He struckout the side to end the game.
