Tex Town Tigers and DSS advance to Final Mastenbroek Tournament

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Host Tex Town Tigers and DSS will meet each other on Sunday-afternoon in the Final of the 36th edition of the J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede. On Saturday (March 30), DSS recorded two shutout-wins, while Tex Town Tigers won its second game. With that, both teams won their Pool to advance to the Final. Also today, the final three games of the five played, ended in No-Hitters!

Tex Town Tigers opened the event on Friday-evening with a 5-3 win against Barracudas Zürich from Switzerland. On Saturday, Tex Town Tigers broke an 1-1 tie with a 7-run rally in the fifth inning to win 8-2 against big league-team Quick Amersfoort.

DSS won with a big 16-0 score against Alcmaria Victrix, scoring twelve runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by homeruns by Koen Halderman (2-run) and Tino van Erk (3-run). In this game, Alexander Valdez threw a 5-inning No-Hitter. In its next game, DSS shutout The Orioles, 5-0 and this time, it was Sander Helmendach, who threw a 4-inning No-Hitter.

The second day began with a 4-1 win for Alcmaria Victrix against The Orioles. The day ended with a big 10-1 win of Quick Amersfoort against Barracudas Zürich. In this game Brian van Laar (3 innings) and Mark Kolner (1 inning) threw a combined No-Hitter. Joran Berkhout hit his second homerun of the day in this game, while Taylor Clemensia also homered for Quick.

Game 2 - The Orioles vs. Alcmaria Victrix

In today's first game, both teams scored a run in the second inning.

In the top of the inning, Alcmaria took an 1-0 lead. Wessel Brocken led off with a single, advanced to second base on a wild pitch with one out and scored on a following single by veteran Ludrick Pieter.

The Orioles immediately came alongside in the bottom of the second inning. The team got the bases loaded when Raynard Valmont led off with a single, Shurty Tremus walked and Kevin van Veen reached on an infield-hit. Valmont was then forced out at the plate on a grounder by Andy Maduro. Hereafter, Ogier Martis also hit a grounder, which resulted in Maduro being forced out on second base, but Tremus scored the tying run.

In the top of the third, Alcmaria re-took the lead. The team of coaches Lisandro Tromp and Ton Roest scored two runs with two outs. Dennis Blom led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Rob van de Kamer. With two outs, he moved to third base on a wild pitch. Next, Michael Pluijmers walked and stole second base. Blom and Pluijmers then both scored when Wessel Brocken followed with a single.

The Orioles got its first two batters on base in its third at bat, but Alcmaria then turned a double play.

Alcmaria added a run in the fourth. Forstin Coenraad led off with an infield-hit, stole second base and scored on an one-out single by Falco Hoffman.

Game 3 - Quick Amersfoort vs. Tex Town Tigers

Quick Amersfoort took a quick lead in the first inning, but was unable to take more distance. Opponent Tex Town Tigers came alongside in the fifth inning, then rallied for seven runs in the sixth to win 8-2.

Quick opened the score in the bottom of the first inning when Joran Berkhout led off with a homerun off of starter Frank van Heijst. In the next three innings, the righthander didn't encounter much problems. He retired the side (two strikeouts) in the second, saw a pick-off succesfully end in an out in the third inning and saw Quick leave a runner on second base in the the fourth.

Tex Town Tigers got into scoring position for the first time in the third inning off of reliever Jan-Willem Geerts. With one out, Finn Vaanholt singled and Ruben Hogt was hit by a pitch. But the inning then ended with a double play.

In the fourth inning, TTT left a runner behind on second base off of new pitcher Mitchell Berghmans. He gave up a 2-out double to Jorick Kers, but a flyout followed.

TTT then came alongside in the top of the fifth. With one out, Daan Hogt singled. His pinch-runner Liam Stolmeijer then stole second base and scored the tying run on a 2-out double by Rube Hogt.

After Quick had left two runners behind in the bottom of the fifth, TTT rallied for seven runs in the top of the sixth on seven basehits. With two runners on base, the team took the lead on a single by Robin Vording. Hereafter, more runs were added on singles by Huub Smid (two runs) and Liam Stolmeijer and a double by Ruben Hogt off of Berghmans. Paster Enrique Martínez Chavez then took over the pitching, but he was greeted with runscoring singles by Mikkel Oosterveld and Tim van Ee.

Now trailing 8-1, Quick scored a run in the bottom of the sixth. Bryan Engelhardt then led off with a double, moved on a grounder and scored on a grounder by Rowan van Hoek. But that was to be it.

Game 4 - Alcmaria Victrix vs. DSS

The game between Alcmaria Victrix and DSS remained scoreless for three innings. DSS then scored four runs in the fourth at bat and rallied for twelve runs in the fifth to record a big shutout-victory.

Alexander Valdez went the distance for the Haarlem-squad and threw a 5-inning No-Hitter. The righthander struckout seven batters and allowed only four Alcmaria-batters to reach base. In the first inning, he hit Rob van de Kamer with a pitch, but he was forced out. After having retired nine batters in a row, Valdez walked Wessel Brocken with two outs in the fourth, but he stranded on first base. And in the fifth, after the first two batters had struckout, Dennis Blom reached on an error, but also was left behind on first base.

Alcmaria-starter Ruben Bakker held DSS scoreless in the first three innings, but then gave up four runs in the fourth at bat. Runai Coran and Aldrich Guzman began with walks. With one out, the bases got loaded when Leandro Anasagasti also walked. Next, a wild pitch led to the first run and an infield-hit by Diamond Silberie re-loaded the bases. Guzman was then forced out on a grounder by Koen Werkman. With the bases still loaded, the next three runs were scored on a single by Devano Pieter and walks for Mitchel Dautzenberg and Tino van Erk. Pieter's father Ludrick Pieter was the first baseman for Alcmaria Victrix.

In the fifth inning, DSS rallied for twelve runs on nine basehits off of reliever Wouter Knop. Aldrich Guzman led off with an infield-hit, then Koen Halderman homered. With one out and the bases loaded, Mitchel Dautzenberg hit a 2-run double, then Tino van Erk followed with a 3-run homerun. Hereafter, the bases got loaded again and this time, Leandro Anasagasti singled in a run, followed by a 2-run double by Diamond Silberie. Kjeld de Lincel then took over the pitching for Alcmaria, but DSS added another run on a grounder by Koen Werkman and a wild pitch to increase the lead to 16-0.

Game 5 - DSS vs. The Orioles

After its 16-0 shutout, no-hit victory in the previous game, DSS continued its strong outing in this game. Against The Orioles, DSS recorded another shutout, winning 5-0. And also another No-Hitter, as Sander Helmendach gave up no basehits in the 4-inning game. The righthander walked two batters. Helmendach walked lead-off hitter Tijani Dunlop in the first inning, but he stranded on second base. In the third, he walked Stijn Goddee, but then retired the next three batters, two of them with a strikeout.

DSS opened the score in the first inning off of starter Yopi Vernon. He walked lead-off hitter Devano Pieter, who stole second base, moved on a grounder by Tino van Erk and scored on a double by Runai Coran.

DSS added a run in the second at bat. This time, Donny Kuijper led off with a walk, but a double play followed. But hereafter, Daniel Heiligers doubled and scored on a following triple by Devano Pieter.

DSS increased the lead to 5-0 by scoring three runs in the third. The bases got loaded when Runai Coran, Aldrich Guzman and Brian Raap all walked. A wild pitch then accounted for a run and the bases were re-loaded when Leando Anasagasti also walked. A pitching change followed and Kevin van Veen took over the pitching. The righthander pitched in the big league for Neptunus, The Hawks and UVV. Van Veen began with a wild pitch, which led to the next run. With Anasagasti on second base, Raap on third base and one out, Diamond Silberie flied out. That became a sacrifice fly, as Raap scored, but also ended up in a double play, as Anasagasti was eliminated trying to advance to third base.

Game 6 - Barracudas Zürich vs. Quick Amersfoort

After having lost its first game today, Quick Amersfoort broke an 1-1 tie in this game with a 9-run rally in the fourth inning to win with a big score. This was the third game in a row in which a No-Hitter was thrown. Starter Brian van Laar and reliever Mark Kolner shared pitching duties in this game for Quick.

Quick opened the score in the top of the first inning off of Swiss-starter Andreas Rüesch when Joran Berkhout led off with a homerun. This was his second homerun today.

Quick-starter Brian van Laar struckout three batters in the first inning, but then gave up the tying run in the second at bat. With one out, the lefthander walked two batters. A throwing error on a force play-grounder by Sascha Litscher led to the run, but two runners were left behind on second and third base.

Quick then struck with nine runs in the fourth inning on six basehits. Jan-Willem Geerts led off with an infield-hit, then Taylor Clemensia homered to break the 1-1 tie. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Rowan van Hoek reached on an infield-hit, Dakota van der Heyde walked and Remian Denis singled. With one out, a run was scored when Joran Berkhout walked. With two outs, the next run was also scored on a walk, this time for Bryan Engelhardt. Pinch-hitter Denzel Brooks delivered a 2-run single. After a pitching change, Rowan van Hoek also brought in two runners with a single and a wild pitch accounted for the ninth run in the inning.
