HAARLEM (Neth.) - After defeating MediaMonks RCH 21-2 yesterday, Corendon Kinheim today registered a big 12-0 shutout against the Heemstede-squad, which will make its return on the highest level this season. Kinheim today added 13 basehits, meaning they collected 31 in the 2-game series, which was the opening of their exhibition season.

In a cold and stormy Pim Mulier Stadium, Kinheim again decided the game early, as it already led 9-0 after three innings. That was the result of ten basehits, including four extra basehits, three of which were back-to-back in the second at bat. Kinheim scored four times in the second inning off starter Martin Kuipers, who last season played for Instant Holland Almere '90. After Tjerk Smeets led off with a single and advanced on a passed ball, three back-to-back extra basehits followed. First, Vince Rooi and Roel Koolen hit RBI-triples, then Jeffrey Verbij delivered an RBI-double to give Kinheim an quick 3-0 lead. Verbij moved on a single by Wouter Heemskerk, then scored on a force play-grounder by Denny Beljaards, who was later eliminated in an inning-ending double play.

Five runs were added in the next at bat when Kuipers gave up five consecutive basehits. René Cremer and Dirk van 't Klooster led off with singles. Tjerk Smeets, who yesterday had six RBI's, and Vince Rooi, who had four yesterday, then followed with RBI-singles. Smeets and Rooi, who advanced on an error, then both scored when next batter Roel Koolen doubled. This marked the end for Kuipers, who was relieved by Marcel Timmer. After Jeffrey Verbij grounded out, Timmer walked Wouter Heemskerk, then gave up an RBI-single to Denny Beljaards. But hereafter, Timmer threw three solid innings and was supported with a double play in the fifth inning. In these inning, Kinheim reached base only twice.

Leading 9-0, Kinheim added three unearned runs in the seventh inning off new pitcher Stefan Magnusson. First, René Cremer's lead-off grounder was misplayed. He then stole second, but two flyouts followed. Cremer then beat the throw to third base on a grounder to short by Vince Rooi to put runners on first and third base. Cremer and Rooi (all the way from first base) then scored when Roel Koolen's flyball to centerfield was misplayed. Moments later, Koolen scored himself on a passed ball.

RCH had eight basehits off three pitchers, but stranded nine baserunners, including three in both the fifth and seventh inning. Kinheim-starter David Bergman got defensive support with a double play in the third and fourth inning and allowed only one RCH-runner to reach third base, while giving up only three basehits. In the fifth inning, Jean-Paul Gulinck took over. The lefthander was greeted with singles by Churandy La Cruz and Nick Heij, but then Maarten Bos flied out and Michel Croes struckout. The bases were loaded when Giovanni Josefa reached on an error, but the inning ended when Bobby Heij grounded out.

In the sixth inning, Duko Jansen became Kinheim's third pitcher. He retired the side in the sixth, but got the bases loaded in the seventh with no outs. Churandy La Cruz (single) and Nick Heij (error) again reached base, as did next batter Maarten Bos (single). But Jansen then struckout Michel Croes and Giovanni Josefa and ended the inning with a grounder.

ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Today's second game between Sparta/Feyenoord and ADO was removed from the schedule before the weekend, because of the current pitching situation at ADO.

As reported in last weekend recaps, ADO has only three pitchers on its exhibition roster, being Dennis Burgersdijk, Berry van Driel and closer Robin van Doornspeek.
Yesterday, Head Coach wim Martinus used non-roster player Quinn Tramm as its starter for the first game between the two teams. Martinus hopes that his pitching problems will be solved before the start of the season.

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - The 2-game series of Konica Minolta Pioniers against its First Division-team Omron Pioniers was canceled, due to the field situation on Sportpark Toolenburg in Hoofddorp.

Both games, to be played yesterday and today, were already removed from the schedule before the weekend. Currently, maintenance and construction work is going on at the main field, where the outfield-fences are being brought in and a new warning track is being added. Because of this situation, there is one senior-level field available for the entire club. Also, because of this, the big league-team conducted its weekly training sessions on the complex of Amsterdam Pirates in Amsterdam. Therefore, both games against Pirates, scheduled for next weekend, will be played in Amsterdam.

Yesterday, Pioniers held an extra practice session on Field 2 and played an intersquad game with addition of some players of the second team. Because of the expected unfavorable weather conditions for today, activities for were canceled in advance.

First exhibition win HCAW
Nederlands | Line Score | Box Score | HCAW's previous game

NIEUWEGEIN (Neth.) - Mr. Cocker HCAW registered its first exhibition victory on Sunday, beating First Divisionist Euro Stars, 11-10. The game was played on the site of Nieuwegein Diamonds as part of that clubs celebrations for its 25th anniversary this year. Despite cold, strong winds and some occassional snow, both team teams managed to play five innings in front of about 30 spectators.

HCAW's opponent Euro Stars last season captured the title in the Second Division, meaning they promoted back to the First Division in which it will play this season again for the first time since 1977. Euro Stars has an experienced line-up, with 12 players on its roster who have big league-experience, including pitcher Guy Hermans, infielder Sjoerd Hermans and outfielders Jeroen Hermans and Rutger Veugelers, who last season all played for Sparta/Feyenoord. Also on the roster of Head Coach Peter van den Akker, who himself led Sparta/Feyenoord on the big league-level for a few seasons, are veteran players like infielder Marcel Buurman and pitcher Erik de Rijcke. HCAW's victory therefore is a good sign for the young Bussum-squad, which lost a lot of experienced players after last season, as Euro Stars not only was the more experienced team, but this season also is considered to be a contender for the First Division-title.

Despite the weather conditions, it was a highscoring game with two big innings. HCAW initially trailed 3-0 and 4-1, then rallied for nine runs in the fourth to take a 10-4 lead. But Euro Stars, which outhit HCAW 9-8, answered with a 6-run rally in the fifth at bat to come alongside. HCAW then scored the winning run in the home of the fifth. Another remarkable thing in this game: all 21 runs were earned!

Euro Stars scored two runs in the second inning off starter Joey Eijpe when Jeroen Hermans, Stefan Venema and Harvin Hart hit three back-to-back doubles with one out. But then Hart was picked off second base by catcher Juriën Overman and next batter Quin Bijster struckout. Euro Stars added a run in the third inning when Sjoerd Hermans led off with a walk, stole second, advanced on a grounder and scored on a single by Marcel Buurman.

Euro Stars-starter Jorian van Acker retired six of the seven batters he faced in the two innings he pitched, including four with a strikeout. In the third inning, Bert Vernooy, whose brother Rien Vernooy plays for Sparta/Feyenoord this season, took over the pitching and gave up one run. With one out, Sebastian Olgers walked and moved on a wild pitch and a grounder, before scoring on a double by Ronald Jaarsma. Euro Stars got the run back immediately in the fourth at bat off new pitcher Kevin Roovers. Jeroen Hermans led off the inning with a single and went on to score on an error.

In the home fourth, the game seemed to turned around in HCAW's favor, as the team scored nine runs off new pitcher Hugo da Silva Almeida. With one out, Gino Henson singled and Sergio Koelemij walked, then Sidney Ensermo followed with an RBI-single. The bases were loaded when next batter Bart Gabriëls walked. After Siemen Korff popped out, a run was scored when Sebastiaan Olgers was hit by a pitch, which was followed by a throwing error by the catcher enabling Ensermo to score the tying run. With runners on second and third, the bases were loaded again when Shurty Tremus also walked. HCAW then took the lead when Ronald Jaarsma delivered a 2-run single on which Tremus reached third base. In this one-three situation, Jaarsma took off for second and Tremus went on to score on a double-steal. Moments later, Jaarsma scored on a single by Gerson Tremus. After Ralph Milliard walked, HCAW increased the lead to 10-4 when Gino Henson followed with a 2-run triple. Hereafter, Da Silva Almeida gave way to former national team-pitcher Erik de Rijcke, who ended the inning with a flyout.

With an apparent comfortable 10-4 lead for HCAW, the fifth inning started. Nine batters later, Euro Stars had tied the score. Kevin Roovers first hit Marcel Buurman (who moved on a passed ball and a flyout), then gave up an one-out RBI-single to Rutger Veugelers. He then loaded the bases by walking Jeroen Hermans and Stefan Venema. Hereafter, Rutger Zwaal was brought in, but he walked Harvin Hart to bring in a run. Zwaal then made an unsuccesfull pick-off at first base, enabling Hermans and Venema to score and Hart to reach third base. Next batter Quin Bijster then struckout, but Sjoerd Hermans followed with a 2-run homerun to tie the score.

In the home of the fifth, HCAW recovered and went on to win the game. With one out, Bart Gabriëls walked, moved on a grounder by Siemen Korff and a single by Sebastiaan Olgers, then scored on a single by Shurty Tremus, before the inning ended with a pop-fly. The game, which was played with strong winds and cold temperatures, hereafter was stopped.
