Tex Town Tigers and DSS split important double-header
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Tex Town Tigers and DSS split their double-header on Saturday (August 5) in what were important games for both teams. DSS won the opener with a 3-2 score, then Tex Town Tigers won the second game with an 8-1 score in six innings. With the loss, DSS became the first team to be eliminated for second place. The team that finishes in second place will host the first day of the Play-Off Weekend.

Tex Town Tigers and DSS are currently in fifth and sixth place respectively. The two teams fall back somewhat in recent weeks, especially since Roef! won several games. However, both still have chances on reaching the top-4 to qualify for the Play-Offs. On the other hand, both are also getting closer to be eliminated, which could happen as early as coming Saturday.

So, for TTT and DSS each game that is won is much-needed to avoid finishing in sixth place. The team in sixth place has to play in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs. There are still some crucial games to play. Both teams have three double-headers left, including one against the winless Talent Team Holland and another one against third-placed Terrasvogels. In their remaining double-headers, DSS meets second-placed Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem coming Saturday, while Tex Town Tigers closes against Roef!, which is in fourth place. Roef! meets league-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem on Saturday.

A lot of things are still possible and the final ranking almost surely will not be decided until the final weekend on September 2-3. After coming weekend, the season will be interrupted (again) for the European Cup Tournaments with the participation of Sparks Haarlem, Terrasvogels, Olympia Haarlem and DSS.

Complete Schedule

Tex Town Tigers vs. DSS (game one)
It was a rainy afternoon in Enschede, resulting in the opening game starting fifteen minutes later than scheduled due to maintenance of the field. Tex Town Tigers took the lead twice, but DSS decided the game in the sixth inning by scoring two runs.

Today, DSS had to without pitcher Dagmar Bloeming, but got a good pitching performance in the opener from Quincey Catsburg. The righthander struckout four batters, gave up seven basehits, went the distance and got fine support from her defense and offense.

After DSS had left a runner behind on second base in the top of the first inning, it was Tex Town Tigers that opened the score with two outs in its first at bat. Olivia Hornstein and Annemiek Jansen led off with singles, but the first was forced out on third base on a grounder by Nadine Marinus. Jansen then moved to third base on a flyout and scored the first run on a wild pitch.

DSS came alongside in the top of the third inning off of Lindsey Meadows, who went the distance for TTT. With two outs, she gave up a homerun to Areke Spel, which was the 25th in her big league-career. Meadows retired the side in the fourth and fifth inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, the DSS-defense turned a double play. In both the third and fourth at bat, Tex Town Tigers left a runner behind on second base. In the third, Olivia Hornstein led off for TTT with a double, but stranded. And in the fourth, Lindsey Meadows reached on a bunt-single with one out and moved on a grounder, but was left behind.

The home team re-took the lead in the fifth, scoring an unearned run. With two outs and Olivia Hornstein (fielder's choice) on first base, Annemiek Jansen singled, then veteran Nadine Marinus delivered a runscoring single to give her team a 2-1 lead. Jansen and Marinus would be left behind on second and third base.

In the top of the sixth, DSS answered with two runs. Noa Brand and Areke Spel opened with singles to put runners at the corners. Spel then also got into scoring position via a stolen base. Brand scored the tying run on a successful sacrifice bunt/squeeze from Sophie Bugter, which brought Spel to third base. When Bugter stole second base, an error followed, which enabled Spel to score the go-ahead run and make it 3-2 in favor of DSS.

After leaving a runner behind on first base in the sixth inning, Tex Town Tigers got the tying run on third base in the seventh. Kimberley Zehnder led off with a walk, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Hornstein and reached third base on a passed ball with two outs. She stranded there, as a following grounder ended the game.

Tex Town Tigers vs. DSS (game two)
DSS was off to a good start in the top of the first inning, scoring a run and getting the bases loaded with two outs. However, this was to be its lone run, as three runners were left behind. DSS got into scoring position only one more time, while Tex Town Tigers turned the game its way in the bottom of the first inning.

Noa Brand led off the first inning off of Lindsey Meadows with a double, but was unable to advance on a following single by Areke Spel. With one out, Brand was forced out on third base on a grounder by Denice van Dijk, but then Lisa Waasdorp followed with a runscoring single. The bases got loaded when Feline Poot walked. Hereafter, Meadows showed her experience and the veteran righthander closed with a strikeout! She would give up only one more basehit in the remainder of the game. She went the distance in both games.

Tex Town Tigers answered with three runs in its first at bat off of starter Svenja de Lincel. With one out, Annemiek Jansen doubled and moved on a wild pitch. Next batter Nadine Marinus was hit by a pitch and reached second base on fielder's indifference. Jansen and Marinus scored when Laura Wissink hereafter hit her fourth homerun of the season.

In the top of the fourth inning, DSS got its final runner in scoring position. Feline Poot reached on an infield-hit and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Annemiek de Rover, then reached third base on a grounder by Lorraine Kieft. She stranded when Lindsey Meadows caught a line drive from next hitter Melissa de Greef.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, TTT rallied for four runs to take more distance. Anna-Bè Bartels led off with a double, then moved to third base on a bunt-single by Myrthe Smid, who moved into scoring position via a fielder's indifference. Kimberley Zehnder followed with a runscoring single and Olivia Hornstein added a 2-run double. After the latter had advanced to third base on a wild pitch, she scored when Annemiek Jansen reached on an error. Hereafter, Quincey Catsburg took over the pitching for DSS. She caught a line drive from Nadine Marinus, which resulted in a double play, then a grounder ended the inning.

Tex Town Tigers got a chance to do some more scoring in the fifth, but then left three runners behind. Lindsey Meadows led off with a single and with one out, Anna-Bè Bartels singled and Myrthe Smid walked to load the bases. Moments later, Meadows was forced out at the plate and a grounder ended the at bat.

The home team reached the 7-run difference with no outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The bases got loaded when Annemiek Jansen (infield-hit) and Nadine Marinus both singled and Laura Wissink reached on an error. Hereafter, Lindsey Meadows grounded to short. An attempt to force out Jansen at the plate followed, but she was safe and that ended the game.
