Olympia Haarlem nips Sparks Haarlem twice to stay unbeaten
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem nipped defending champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem twice on Saturday (May 13) to stay unbeaten.

A week ago, Sparks Haarlem came from behind twice against DSS to win twice with an one-run difference in the bottom of the seventh inning. Today, it was Sparks Haarlem that was left empty-handed and suffered two one-run difference losses of its own.

For Olympia Haarlem, it was narrow escape today, but the team won 5-4 and 6-5 to stay unbeaten and extend its winning streak to 12 games.

In the opener, Olympia Haarlem led twice, but Sparks Haarlem came alongside both times. Olympia then scored three runs and went on to win 5-4.

In the second game, Olympia Haarlem led 3-2 after five innings, then trailed 5-3 when the bottom of the seventh inning began. A homerun by Mariëlle Vleugels then tied the score and Tomoko Goda delivered a walk-off single to give the home team a 6-5 win.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (game one)
In the first game, Olympia Haarlem took the lead three times, but Sparks Haarlem erased the deficit twice. When Olympia Haarlem scored three runs in the fifth to take the lead for the third time, it hold onto it.

Olympia Haarlem opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Leonella Elizabeth, who returned to the circle after having been sidelined with an injury. She walked lead-off hitter Shareday Christina and also walked next batter Brenda Beers. The bases got loaded when Jessie van Aalst singled with one out. The first run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Dinet Oosting.

In the second inning, Olympia again got its first two batters on base when Rachel van Veen and Stephanie Pearce also walked. But this time, the home team left two runners behind.

Olympia-starter Eva Voortman retired the first six batters she faced, including four strikeouts, but then gave up the tying run in the third at bat. The lefthander gave up lead-off singles to Kingsley Avery and Tammie Lijbers, but followed with another strikeout. Hereafter, a force play-comeback-grounder from Anne Blaauwgeers followed. In an attempt to force out Avery at third base, an error was made, which loaded the bases. Moments later, Avery scored on a sacrifice fly by Kehli Washington.

Olympia Haarlem took another lead in the fourth. Rachel van Veen led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Pearce. The game was then briefly interrupted by rain, but continued after an 8-minute delay. A wild pitch then brought Van Veen to third base and Maranca Ham walked. Her pinch-runner Emma Wójcik stole second base and Shareday Christina followed with a sacrifice fly. Van Veen scored and Wójcik advanced to third base. The inning ended when Wójcik was eliminated in a rundown after a pick-off.

Sparks Haarlem again erased the deficit by coming alongside in the top of the fifth on a rare play. Kingsley Avery led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. With one out, the New Zealander moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Onaisha Franka. Hereafter, Anne Blaauwgeers struckout, but the third strike was not under control of catcher Dinet Oosting. The inning could have ended when the ball was thrown to first base to complete the strikeout, or when the batter would have been tagged. However, thinking it was an inning-ending strikeout, the players of Olympia left the field. In the meantime, Avery scored the tying run. As a discussion was going on with the umpire, Blaauwgeers not only reached first base, but even continued running to third base. She stranded there, as a grounder ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fifh inning, Olympia Haarlem broke the 2-2 tie. Brenda Beers led off with a single, which was followed by a pitching change. Rebecca Soumeru took over, but walked Mariëlle Vleugels, who was replaced by pinch-runner Amber Krijgsman. With one out, Dinet Oosting drove the ball over the fence in left-centerfield for a 3-run homerun to put Olympia ahead 5-2.

Sparks Haarlem got one run back in the sixth when Maxime van Dalen led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Karin Tuk. In the seventh, Sparks got close to come from behind and turn the game its way, just as it had done a week ago against DSS. Kingsley Avery led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Tammie Lijbers, who was then replaced by pinch-runner Desiree Adriaansz. With two outs, Anne Blaauwgeers walked and Kehli Washington followed with a runscoring single that made it a 5-4 score. As an outfield-error followed, it led to runners on second and third base. And so, Blaauwgeers was now at third base. A week ago, she scored both winning runs in the comeback-victories against DSS and now had a chance to score the tying run. But this time, she stranded on third base, as a grounder ended the inning and the game.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (game two)
In the second game, it was Sparks Haarlem that took the lead three times, but it failed to hold onto it each time. In the seventh inning, Olympia Haarlem trailed 5-3, came alongside and scored the winning run with two outs.

In the top of the second inning, Sparks Haarlem got its first runner in scoring position off of Mariëlle Vleugels. She was listed as the designated player in the starting line-up, while Eva Voortman (who was in the tenth spot) was announced as starting pitcher. During the pre-game meeting, a change followed, as Olympia Haarlem then went from ten to nine players and Vleugels started the game instead of Voortman. In the second at bat, Vleugels hit lead-off hitter Maxime van Dalen, then also hit Kingsley Avery with two outs, but they were left behind.

In the bottom of the second, it was Olympia that left a runner in scoring position off of Ginger de Weert. Like Leonella Elizabeth in the opener, De Weert also returned into action after having been sidelined for two weeks with an injury.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score in the third. With two outs, Kehli Washington walked and Jenny Kinburn singled, then Maxime van Dalen followed with a runscoring single. But the team left runners behind on second and third base.

Olympia Haarlem came alongside in the bottom of the third, also with two outs. With one out, Shareday Christina singled, moved on 2 -out single by Mariëlle Vleugels and scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst. Olympia then also stranded two runners.

Sparks Haarlem got close to re-taking the lead in the top of the fourth. Karin Tuk led off with a double and advanced to third base on an one-out grounder, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

Sparks then did score a run in the fifth. Anne Blaauwgeers led off with a bunt-single, stole second base, advanced on a grounder and scored on a grounder by Jenny Kinburn to make it a 2-1 score.

Again, Olympia reacted immediately and this time scored twice. Both were unearned due to two defensive errors. With one out, Shareday Christina reached on an infield-hit, then reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Rachel van Veen. A throwing error then followed after a comeback-grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels, which enabled Christina to score the tying run and also led to a pitching change. Rebecca Soumeru took over, but gave up a sacrifice fly to Jessie van Aalst that gave Olympia a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, it was Sparks Haarlem that reacted and scored three runs of four hits to take a 5-3 lead. Virginie Anneveld led off with a walk, moved on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on a double by Karin Tuk. With the score at 3-3, Olympia returned back to ten players, as Eva Voortman took over the pitching, while Mariëlle Vleugels returned to her original role of designated player. Sparks also made a change, as it brought in Maaike Blaauwgeers as pinch-runner for Tuk. She scored the go-ahead run when Kingsley Avery followed with a double. Hereafter, Avery moved to third base while Onaisha Franka was eliminated at first base and then scored on a bunt-single by pinch-hitter Tammie Lijbers to make it a 5-3 score.

Olympia Haarlem left two runners behind in the bottom of the sixth, but struck in the next inning after Sparks Haarlem was retired in order.

In the seventh, Rachel van Veen led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Emma Wójcik. Hereafter, Mariëlle Vleugels drilled the ball over the leftfield-fence for a 2-run homerun to tie the score at 5-5! With one out, Dinet Oosting singled and stole second base with two outs. Tomoko Goda followed with a runscoring, walk-off single to give Olympia a 6-5 come-from-behind victory and stay unbeaten!
