Terrasvogels decides games against DSS in first inning
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Terrasvogels won its double-header against DSS on Saturday (May 13) with scores of 1-0 and 4-2. In both games, Terrasvogels scored its runs in the first inning. A week ago, DSS lost twice in the seventh inning against Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem. In the opener, two errors led to the lone run. The second game opened the same way, as lead-off hitter Katharina Szalay again was able to touch all bases without the ball leaving the ball. Hereafter, Terrasvogels added three more runs to make it a 4-0 lead.

In the second game, American righthander Micaela Whitney made her debut for Terrasvogels and did very well, striking out ten batters and giving up only three hits. The team had to do today without Kimberly Jones, who sustained an injury while playing last Wednesday in an exhibition game of the Netherlands National Softball Team.

DSS now has lost seven consecutive games and is in sixth position.

Complete Schedule

DSS vs. Terrasvogels (game one)
The first game was decided in the top of the first inning by the first batter, who scored the lone run on two errors. Katharina Szalay led off for Terrasvogels with a bunt, which ended in an error. When that was followed by an outfield-error, Szaly was able to circle all bases and score. And that would be the lone run in the game. While Szalay scored the lone run, her hitting streak ended after eight games.

After Szalay had scored, Suka Van Gurp and Lizzie Clarijs singled with one out. Hereafter, an attempt for a double-steal ended in an out and a strikeout closed the at bat.

Terrasvogels got into scoring position again in the top of the fourth. Lizzie Clarijs led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Ella Krommendijk. She was unable to move on an infield-hit by Rhowan Stuart. The runners then advanced on a grounder, but were left at second and third base.

Terrasvogels got some more baserunners in the following three innings, but didn't get another runner in scoring position.

DSS also got some runners in scoring position, but was unable to score. The Terrasvogels-defense played a solid game, headed by 3B Katharina Szalay, who made some nice plays. Short stop Lizzie Clarijs made a great diving catch on a line drive by Noa Brand to end the fifth inning.

DSS got its first runner in scoring position in the third inning. Lorraine Kieft led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Noa Brand, but stranded on second base.

In the fourth, rookie Feline Poot singled with one out, but Terrasvogels then made a double play. In the sixth, (former Terrasvogels-player) Lisa Waasdorp led off with an infield-hit, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Morgan Sampson, but also was left at second base.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Feline Poot singled again and pinch-hitter Dominique Burger then reached on a fielder's choice-sacrifice bunt. The two runners were left behind, as Terrasvogels-pitcher Dani Bonnet retired the next three batters, two of them with a strikeout, to end the game.

And so, the game ended in an 1-0 win for Terrasvogels. For DSS-starter Dagmar Bloeming, it was her sixth loss of the season. That's a rare statistic for the experienced righthander, who stayed unbeaten in the 2012, 2014 and 2015 seasons, winning a total of 38 games in those three seasons combined. The six losses are the most since she lost eight in her first season with Sparks Haarlem in 2009.

DSS vs. Terrasvogels (game two)
The first game was played under clouded skies and there was some rain in the third inning. Between the games, the clouds broke and the second game even started under sunny (but clouded) weather conditions. However, during the second game, temperatures dropped and it was pretty cold when the game ended.

The second game opened the same way as the first one, as Terrasvogels' lead-off hitter Katharina Szalay again circled the bases. She lined the ball through the middle for a triple, then was able to score on a following throw to third base. This time, this was not the lone run in the game, as Terrasvogels added three more.

Leading 1-0 and with one out, Suka Van Gurp walked and reached second base safely when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Lizzie Clarijs. The latter was then forced out on a grounder by Rhowan Stuart, but Dervisa Mutic followed with a triple that brought in two runs. When the throw to third base ended in another error, Mutic also was able to continue running and score the next run to make it a 4-0 score. Hereafter, Jessica Waasdorp and Kelly Koeman singled, but they were left behind.

Terrasvogels was retired in order in the next two innings by Quincey Catsburg, who went the distance for DSS. The team got its next runner in scoring position in the fourth. Kelly Koeman then walked with one out and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Gabi Obia, but was left behind.

The team got another runner in scoring position in the sixth. Rhowan Stuart led off with a single and reached second base on a sac-bunt by Dervisa Mutic, but then also stranded.

American Micaela Whithey went the distance for Terrasvogels and left a strong impression in her debut in the Dutch big league. The righthander struckout ten batters and gave up only three basehits.

Whitney held DSS hitless in the first four innings and got only two baserunners in that span. After striking out the side in the first inning, she saw Feline Poot reach on an error with two outs in the second at bat, but then closed with another strikeout. In the fourth, she walked lead-off hitter Lisa Waasdorp, but Terrasvogels then turned a nice double play. Whitney's No-Hitter ended in the fifth when Sophie Bugter led off with a single, but she was later forced out.

In the bottom of the sixth, DSS had a productive at bat, scoring two runs. With two outs, Lisa Waasdorp was hit on her helmet, then reached third base when Morgan Sampson followed with a single. Hereafter, Areke Spel doubled to bring in both runners and make it a 4-2 score. A grounder ended the at bat.

In the top of the seventh inning, Terrasvogels got the bases loaded but was unable to add another run. With one out, Katharina Szalay reached on a bunt-single. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Sanne Korpel walked and Lizzie Clarijs was hit by a pitch. The inning ended when rightfielder Morgan Sampson caught a line drive from Rhowan Stuart.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stephanie Ruiter walked with one out for DSS. Pinch-hitter Denice van Dijk then lined the ball towards short stop Lizzie Clarijs, who made another nice catch. Hereafter, Micaela Whitney ended the inning and the game with her tenth strikeout.
