Roef! ends up short against Terrasvogels in Golden League-debut
Nederlands

MOERGESTEL (Neth.) - Roef! played its first two games in the Golden League on Saturday (April 15), making its debut in the highest league. In its opener, the team from Moergestel faced Terrasvogels, one of the most successful teams through the years in the Dutch big league and is the recordholder with 35 participations in European Cup-tournaments.

In both games, Roef! outhit Terrasvogels, which also committed five errors. Despite that, Roef! ended up short and lost 3-1 and 2-1 in two close games, but made a fine impression in its big league-debut.

Last season, Roef! finished in a tie for first place in the Silver League with UVV, which then won a tiebreaker to claim first place. In the following Play-Offs for promotion, Roef! won against De Glaskoning Twins, which therefore relegated. In the next game, Roef! also won against UVV to promote to the big league.

Before today's Opening Day-games, Hans Janssen, the Mayor of the Municipality of Oisterwijk, addressed the media and had praising words for Roef!, as did Bart Volkerijk, the Executive Director of the KNBSB. Players and coaches of Roef! were then introduced, wearing new uniforms and a new scoreboard was just ready in time to come into action. Also attending the first Golden League-games in Moergestel were National Team Head Coach Juni Francisca and Saskia Kosterink, the new Head Coach of the National Under-19 Team (and Talent Team Holand).

Before the first game, Peter Smit, the Alderman for Sports of Oisterwijk (Moergestel belongs to this Municipality) threw out the ceremonial first pitch.

After completion of the double-header, an Opening Dinner for players, coaches, officials and fans was organized by De Nieuwe Erf, one of the sponsors of Roef!

Roef! vs. Terrasvogels (game one)
Roef!-starter Marjolein Merkx retired the side in the first inning, but then gave up two runs in the next at bat. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Suka Van Gurp, then hit next batter Rhowan Stuart with a pitch and saw the two get into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Dervisa Mutic. With two outs, Sanne Korpel delivered a runscoring single and a wild pitch made it 2-0 in favor of Terrasvogels.

Roef! got one run back in the bottom of the second inning off of Dani Bonnet. Isa Los and Manon van Alebeek led off with a single in their first at bat for their new team. In previous seasons, Los played for Tex Town Tigers, while Van Alebeek had come to Roef! from Twins. Van Alebeek's infield-hit was followed by a throwing error, which led to runners at the corners. With one out, Los scored on a grounder by Charlotte Haen. Van Alebeek stranded on third base, as Bonnet closed with a strikeout.

Marjolein Merkx encountered no problems in the third and fourth inning, but saw Terrasvogels get into scoring position again in the fifth. Kelly Koeman led off with a walk, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Sanne Korpel and reached third base on a single by Ella Krommendijk, who then stole second base. But the two were left behind.

Terrasvogels then did add an insurance run in the sixth inning. With one out, Suka Van Gurp singled, advanced on an error and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Dervisa Mutic.

After having scored its first run in the second inning, Roef! left two runners behind in the third, then was retired in order in the next two innings. Trailing 3-1, Roef! got a chance to turn the game its way in the bottom of the sixth inning. Eva van Knegsel led off with a single and advanced when an outfield-error followed. Next batter Isa Los reached on a fielder's choice and the two runners moved on a wild pitch with one out. They were unable to advanced when Naftely Pietersz reached on an infield-hit, her first big league basehit. With the bases loaded, Dani Bonnet struckout the next batter and fielded successfully a comeback-grounder to end the inning. With that, three runners were left behind.
