Olympia Haarlem escapes to stay unbeaten
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem recorded a convincing 11-3 win in five innings in the opener of their double-header against DSS on Saturday (May 20). In the second game, Olympia Haarlem trailed 5-1 after five innings, but came alongside and won 7-5 in nine innings in a narrow escape to stay unbeaten.

In today's double-header, pitcher Ilona Andringa played in her first games for Olympia Haarlem after returning home after completion of her college-season in the States. With her debut for Olympia Haarlem, Ilona Andringa now has played for five different teams in six seasons. Since 2012, she played for HCAW (2012, First Division), Amsterdam Pirates (2013, 'Overgangsklasse'), Terrasvogels (2014, big league, did not play due to injury) and UVV (2015-2016, Silver League). Since 2012, she also played in the highest division as player of the Netherlands Juniors Team/Talent Team Holland.

On the other hand, Olympia Haarlem today played without Eva Voortman, who is the team's pitching ace and solid hitter. She sustained a minor injury in a domestic accident and was sidelined just out of precaution to give her some extra time to recover.

Complete Schedule

DSS vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game one)
In the first inning of today's opener, Olympia Haarlem rallied for five runs off of starter Dagmar Bloeming to set the tone. Shareday Christina led off with a double and Brenda Beers followed with a single, which led to runners on second and third base. A fielding error on a grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels produced the first run. Vleugels also advanced to second base on an error, which enabled Beers to score the next run. With Vleugels on second base, Jessie van Aalst walked and Dinet Oosting followed with a 2-run triple. Hereafter, a runscoring single by Rachel van Veen lifted the lead to 5-0, while there were still no outs. After a grounder, Bloeming closed the inning with two strikeouts, but DSS faced a big deficit and was unable to erase that in the remainder of the game.

Dagmar Bloeming retired the side in the second inning, but gave up lead-off singles to Jessie van Aalst and Dinet Oosting in the top of the third inning. The experienced righthander was then replace by Svenja de Lincel and Olympia Haarlem went on to rally for six more runs to take a dominating lead. De Lincel retired the first two batters she faced, but then saw the two runners advance on a passed ball and gave up a 2-run single to Tomoko Goda. With the Japanese player on second base, Emma Wójcik walked, then two runners moved on a wild pitch and the bases got loaded when pinch-hitter Amber Krijgsman also walked. A single by Brenda Beers and 2-run double by Mariëlle Vleugels followed to make it an 11-0 score. Next batter Jessie van Aalst also singled. Vleugels was waved home to score, but was eliminated at the plate to end the inning.

Olympia Haarlem appeared to add some more runs in the top of the fourth when it got the bases loaded, but a strikeout then ended the at bat.

In her first start for Olympia Haarlem, Ilona Andringa went the distance. In the first inning, the righthander retired the first two batters, then walked Areke Spel and gave up a single to Sophie Bugter, but closed with a strikeout.

DSS got into scoring position again in the third. Noa Brand led off with a walk and Areke Spel singled with one out to put runners at the corners, but they were left behind.

DSS then did score in the bottom of the fourth. Stephanie Ruiter led off with a single and Lorraine Kieft reached on an error. Both scored when Dominique Burger drove the ball over the leftfield-fence for a 3-run homerun. With that, the 10-run mercy-rule difference was erased, meaning at least one more inning needed to be played.

In the fifth inning, both teams were retired in order to end the game after all via the mercy-rule.

DSS vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game two)
In the second game, the winning streak of Olympia Haarlem came into jeopardy, as the team trailed 5-1 after five innings. Olympia then rallied for four runs to come alongside and force extra innings, then won 7-5 in nine innings to stay unbeaten and extend its winning streak to 14 games.

Olympia Haarlem was retired in order in the top of the first inning by starter Quincey Catsburg, then left runners on second and third base in the second at bat.

Olympia-starter Mariëlle Vleugels saw DSS leave a runner in the bottom of the first inning. But DSS then struck with four runs in the second at bat.

In the second, Denice van Dijk led off with a double, then Dominique Burger walked with one out. DSS opened the score when Annemiek de Rover followed with an RBI-double. With runners on second and third base, Melissa de Greef reached on a fielder's choice-grounder to load the bases. The bases were then cleared when Lisa Waasdorp connected for a 3-run triple to give DSS a 4-0 lead.

After leaving two runners behind in the fourth inning, Olympia Haarlem scored its first run in the top of the fifth. With two outs and Shareday Christina (fielder's choice) on first base, Brenda Beers singled. Mariëlle Vleugels then also singled to bring in Christina and put runners on second and third base. That led to a pitching change, as Dagmar Bloeming took over the DSS-pitching with a 4-1 lead. She got a grounder that ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the fifth, DSS immediately got the run back and with that, it appeared to score an insurance run. Morgan Sampson led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Areke Spel and moved to third on a single by Sophie Bugter. Moments later, Sampson scored on a sacrifice fly by Denice van Dijk to make it a 5-1 score. With a runner on third base, Ilona Andringa took over the pitching and closed the inning.

However, the game turned the way of Olympia Haarlem in the top of the sixth when it scored four unearned runs to come alongside! Dinet Oosting led off with a single, then reached second base safely on a throwing error that followed a force play-grounder by Rachel van Veen. The bases then got loaded when Stephanie Pearce walked. Hereafter, pitcher Dagmar Bloeming struckout the next two batters, but then gave up a runscoring infield-hit to Shareday Christina that narrowed Olympia's lead to 5-2. Brenda Beers then connected for a 3-run triple down the leftfield-line that tied the score!

After both teams were retired in order in the seventh inning, the game went into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, tie-break runner Rachel van Veen moved to third base on a grounder, but was left behind. In the bottom of the eighth, tie-break runner Sophie Bugter advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Denice van Dijk. DSS then got another runner in scoring position when Lorraine Kieft reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base. With runners on second and third base, Ilona Andringa struckout Dominique Burger, whose reaction on the called third strike prompted Home Plate Umpire Patrick Reus to eject her. A force play was then set up by walking Noa Brand intentionally, but the three runners were left behind when a flyout closed the at bat.

When the top of the ninth inning began, it took some pitches for DSS Head Coach Norman Ames to make up his mind regarding the defensive changes he had to make after the ejection of Dominique Burger, who played at second base. She was replaced by Feline Poot, who became the Offensive Player Only (OPO), as Designated Player Morgan Sampson took over at second base. However, before the first pitch was thrown, Ames decided to move Sampson to short stop (which is her prime position), while Melissa de Greef moved from short to second base. After three pitches to lead-off hitter Shareday Christina, Ames reverses his decision again and switches Sampson (back to second) and De Greef (back to short) again. The very next pitch to Christina ends in an error, which enables tie-break runner Maranca Ham to score and put Olympia ahead, 6-5. Christina then moves to third base on a ground-rule double by Brenda Beers. With one out, an additional run was scored on a grounder by Jessie van Aalst. With Beers now at third base, next batters Dinet Oosting and Rachel van Veen were both walked intentionally to set up a force play and pitch around the two powerhitters. A force play didn't follow, as Dagmar Bloeming closed with a strikeout.

DSS was unable to come back in its ninth at bat. With two outs, Ilona Andringa walked Areke Spel, then closed the game with a strikeout.
