Olympia Haarlem again strikes late to save winning streak
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Unbeaten league-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem extended its winning streak to 16 games on a sunny Thursday-afternoon (May 25) in Enschede by winning 9-6 and 4-2 against Tex Town Tigers.

The last two weeks, the winning streak came into jeopardy. Last Saturday, Olympia Haarlem faced a 5-1 deficit in the second game against DSS. The team then came alongside and won 7-5 in nine innings to win its 14th consecutive game.

Today, Olympia Haarlem trailed 2-0 after six innings in its 16th game, but then scored four runs runs in the seventh inning when Mariëlle Vleugels hit a 2-out grand slam homerun! In the first game, Olympia rallied for five runs in the first inning to take an early decisive lead.

Two weeks ago, Olympia nipped Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem twice, 5-4 and 6-5. In the second game of that double-header, it also was Mariëlle Vleugels, who hit an important homerun, which then tied the score.

Mariëlle Vleugels and Ilona Andringa did the pitching for Olympia Haarlem today. Andringa, who made her debut in the team last Saturday and then was the winning pitcher in both games, today was credited again with the win twice. With that, she raised her record t0 4-0. Pitching ace Eva Voortman also didn't play today, as she is recovering from a minor injury she sustained late last week in a domestic accident.

The grand slam by Mariëlle Vleugels was the second one hit this season in the Golden League. On May 14, Jessica Waasdorp of Terrasvogels hit the first one in a game against the Talent Team Holland.

Tex Town Tigers vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game one)
In the opener, Olympia Haarlem was outhit 12-9, but the defense of Tex Town Tigers made four costly errors resulting in seven unearned runs. Centerfielders Brenda Beers (Olympia) and Annemiek Jansen (TTT) both had three hits in this game. Catchers Dinet Oosting (Olympia) and Aafje van Baal (TTT) both batted in three runs.

Olympia Haarlem scored five runs in the top of the first inning. With that, the team appeared to take an early comfortable lead, but Tex Town Tigers came back later in the game. However, the five runs were decisive. Three runs were unearned due to two errors. Lead-off hitter Shareday Christina reached on an error and next batter Brenda Beers walked. With one out, the first run was scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst and Dinet Oosting followed with a 2-run single. Two more runs were added when Tomoka Goda's hit into the outfield ended in an error and Emma Wójcik connected for a runscoring single.

Tex Town Tigers answered with three runs on four hits off of starter Ilona Andringa. Nadine Marinus led off with a double and advanced on an one-out single by Laura Wissink. Marinus was then unable to score on an infield-hit by Lindsey Meadows that loaded the bases. With two outs, Aafje van Baal had a great at bat. With an 0-2 count, she fouled off three balls. With an 1-2 count, she fouled off six more pitches. Finally, on the 13th delivery from Andringa, Van Baal made good contact and cleared the bases with a 3-run double down the leftfield-line. On the throw to the plate, Van Baal tried to advance to third base, but was eliminated there to end the inning.

In the top of the second inning, Brenda Beers tripled for Olympia with two outs, but was left behind. Tex Town Tigers then got another run back in its second at bat. With one out, Lizzie Uytendaal tripled and scored on a 2-out single by Nadine Marinus. Hereafter, Annemiek Jansen also singled. The home team left two runners behind, but had narrowed the deficit to only 5-4.

In the following innings, Olympia Haarlem took more distance. In the top of the third, with two outs, Dinet Oosting (fielder's choice) stole second and third base, then scored on a double by Tomoko Goda. That led to a pitching change. Anna-Bè Bartels took over and closed with a strikeout.

The league-leader added three more (unearned) runs in the fourth. Maranca Ham led off with a single and scored all the way from first base when a grounder by Shareday Christina ended in an error. A single by Brenda Beers and a 2-out infield-hit by Dinet Oosting then lifted the lead to 9-4

In the fifth, TTT scored another run. With one out, Annemiek Jansen doubled and scored on a 2-out single by Jasmine Peters. With runners at the corners, Mariëlle Vleugels took over the Olympia-pitching and got an inning-ending flyout.

In the bottom of the seventh, TTT scored its final run. Annemiek Jansen led off with a double and scored on an one-double from Lindsey Meadows, but that was it for the home team in this game.

Tex Town Tigers vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game two)
In the second game, Olympia Haarlem was limited to only one basehit in the first four innings and got into scoring position once off of Lindsey Meadows who went the distance for Tex Town Tigers. In the second inning, Dinet Oosting walked with one out, stole second base, but then was left behind. In the fourth, Brenda Beers led off with a double, tried to stretch it into a triple, but was eliminated at third base.

Tex Town Tigers was more productive off of starter Mariëlle Vleugels. In the first inning, Nadine Marinus (lead-off) and Laura Wissink (one-out) singled, but stranded on second and third base. In the second, Daniëlle ten Donkelaar led off with a double, but was left behind on third base.

TTT then did open the score in the bottom of the fourth. Lindsey Meadows led off with a double, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Aafje van Baal and scored on a 2-out infield-hit by Anna-Bè Bartels.

TTT doubled its lead in the fifth. With one out, Nadine Marinus walked. With two outs, Ilona Andringa took over the pitching for Olympia, but was greeted with a runscoring single by Laura Wissink that made it a 2-0 score.

Olympia Haarlem had gotten its second runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth. Dinet Oosting led off with a single and Stephanie Pearce walked with two outs, but a force play ended the at bat.

Trailing 2-0, Olympia got the bases loaded in the top of the sixth, but failed to score. First, Shareday Christina reached on an error. With two outs, Jessie van Aalst singled, which led to runners on second and third base. With first base open, Dinet Oosting was walked intentionally to set up a force play, but Lindsey Meadows closed the at bat with a strikeout.

In the top of the seventh inning, Olympia got the bases loaded again and this time, it did score. And it turned the game its way, one pitch away from its first loss of the season.

With one out, pinch-hitter Emma Wójcik walked in the seventh inning. Meadows followed with a strikeout and so, TTT was only one out away from not only winning the game, but also ending Olympia's winning streak. Meadows even got one pitch away from the win, as she had two strikes on next batter Shareday Christina. However, the bases got loaded when Christina and Brenda Beers both singled. Mariëlle Vleugels was the next batter and hit a 2-2 delivery over the leftfield-fence for a grand slam homerun that gave Olympia a 4-2 lead! Meadows closed with a strikeout, but the game had turned around!

In the bottom of the seventh, Ilona Andringa gave up a 2-out single to Annemiek Jansen, but then made the final out herself on a comeback-grounder from Laura Wissink.
