Olympia Haarlem stays unbeaten after winning twice against Terrasvogels

HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem stayed unbeaten in the Golden League after winning its double-header against Terrasvogels on Saturday (April 29). Olympia Haarlem won the first game 3-0, then nipped Terrrasvogels 3-2 in the second match-up.

With tthe two wins, Olympia Haarlem now has won all eight games it played since the season opened on April 15.

Last season, the team was 4-4 after its first eight games of the season. In the four seasons before that, Olympia Haarlem was 6-2. The 8-0 start is its best season's start since 2014 when it won the first six games.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Terrasvogels (game one)
While Olympia Haarlem scored all three runs in the opener in the fourth inning, the lead and the win never had been in real jeopardy. Winning pitcher Ellen Roberts controlled the game. The Australian struckout eleven batters and gave up only four basehits, three of which were hit by Katharina Szalay.

Terrasvogels got into scoring position only twice, but it got a chance to open the score in the top of the first inning. Katharina Szalay led off with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Sanne Korpel. However, a pop-up then accounted for the second out and after Kimberly Jones was hit by a pitch, Ellen Roberts closed with a strikeout.

Roberts struckout the side in the second inning and was supported with a double play in the third after Szalay had reached on a bunt-single. She then saw Terrasvogels gets its second runner in scoring position in the fourth. With one out, Kimberly Jones (fielder's choice) stole second base, but Roberts struckout the next two batters. In the remainder of the game, Terrasvogels reached only more time, which was in the sixth inning when Katharina Szalay recorded her third basehit.

Terrasvogels-starter Dani Bonnet kept Olympia Haarlem from scoring in the first two innings. In the first at bat, Brenda Beers reached on an error with one out and stole second base with two outs, but stranded. In the second inning, Eva Voortman led off with a bunt-single and stole second base, but then was caught stealing at third base.

After being retired in order in the third inning, Olympia Haarlem scored its three runs in the fourth. With one out, Dinet Oosting and Eva Voortman (bunt) singled, then Rachel van Veen (one-run) and Tomoko Goda (2-run) hit back-to-back runscoring doubles.

German pitcher Claudia Volkmann threw the fifth and sixth inning for Terrasvogels. She didn't gave up additional runs and saw Olympia Haarlem get into scoring position very briefly one more time. Volkmann walked lead-off hitter Eva Voortman in the sixth inning. With two outs, she advanced to second on an infield-hit by Cheska Ham, but then was eliminated after over-running the base, ending the inning.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Terrasvogels (game two)
The second victory didn't come that easy. Olympia Haarlem was outhit 8-7, briefly trailed, saw Terrasvogels erase a deficit in the fourth and broke the tie in the same at bat. This time, the home team hold onto the minimal lead and won 3-2.

Terrasvogels opened the score in the top of the first inning off of Eva Voortman. Katharina Szalay led off with a bunt-single, stole second base with one out, advanced to third on a passed ball with two outs and scored on a double by Kimberly Jones, who then was left behind on second base.

Olympia Haarlem answered with a run in its first at bat off of Dani Bonnet. With one out, Eva Voortman singled, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst, who today played against her former team.

Olympia Haarlem took a 2-1 lead in the second inning. With one out, Shareday Christina reached on an infield-hit, advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Stephanie Pearce and scored on a single by Emma Wójcik.

Terrasvogels got a chance to come back in the third inning. With one out, Katharina Szalay singled and stole second base. After next batter Sanne Korpel had walked, Szalay tried to advance to third base on a passed ball, but was eliminated. Szalay, who collected five basehits in today's double-header, is currently the leading hitter in the Golden League with a .667 batting average. She also leads the league with 14 basehits.

Terrasvogels then did tie the score in the fourth inning. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs singled and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Dervisa Mutic. Clarijs then scored the tying run on a single by Ella Krommendijk, who herself was eliminated at second base trying to advance on the throw to the plate.

Olympia Haarlem re-took the lead immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Dinet Oosting led off with a single and scored on an one-out triple by Shareday Christina, who later was caught stealing after a pick-off at third base.

In the fifth, Olympia Haarlem appeared to add another run. With one out, Rachel van Veen walked and pinch-hitter Ellen Roberts singled, which led to a pitching change. Femke Duffhues took over and got a force play-grounder and flyout that ended the inning. She then retired the side in the sixth.
