Olympia Haarlem wins once on long and wet day in Enschede
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won 14-11 in the opening game of its double-header against Tex Town Tigers on Saturday (May 4). The second game went underway, but was halted by rain in the second inning.

The first game was interrupted several times because of rain and hail. In total, it took three hours and 40 minutes to complete the game, including four delays that were a combined 24 minutes. The three hours and 16 minutes playing time is almost surely the longest ever for a 7-inning game in the highest Dutch league.

When the first game ended, Sparks Haarlem and DSS already had completed their double-header 42 minutes earlier! The double-header between Roef! and Terrasvogels ended 13 minutes after conclusion of the TTT-Olympia opener. When the second game started in Enschede, the final out was made in the second game of the double-header between Hoofddorp Pioniers and Twins Oosterhout.

It was a chilly day with an average temperature of 7,8 degrees Celsius (46 F) when the first games started with a windchill of 4,2 C (39,6 F). Besides that, there were some strong winds. The games that started at 12 PM in Haarlem and Moergestel began with temperatures of 8,5 (47,3) and 8,6 (47,5) degrees. However, it was much colder in Enschede. When the first game went underway, it was only 5,6 degrees C (42,1 F) with a windchill of 2,2 C (36 F).

Today was National Memorial Day in the Netherlands. On May 4, there are several Memorials throughout the country. At 8 PM, the National Memorial takes place at the National Monument at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.

When May 4 is a day in the weekend, games start earlier. Mostly at 12 PM, as was the case today. Not only to finish the double-header in time, but also to enable those who want to attend Memorials to do so.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Game 1

In the first game, the two teams combined on 25 runs scored and collected 26 basehits. There were seven pitchers, who threw 23 walks combined! The seven threw 373 pitches, which all had to be judged by Home Plate Umpire Wout van der Horst.

Four Tex Town Tigers-pitchers walked 13 batters. This is the highest total in one game since 2013. In that season, two pitchers of Terrasvogels walked 13 batters on May 18 and four pitchers of Olympia Haarlem did the same on July 20. In both games, Sparks Haarlem was the opponent.

The 23 walks combined are the most since May 16, 2016. On that day, two pitchers (one for each team) walked 17 batters in a 10-ining game between Terrasvogels and Olympia Haarlem.

The score went back-and-forth. Olympia Haarlem led 5-0 halfway the third inning, then Tex Town Tigers came alongside. In the fifth inning, Olympia led 8-5, but again failed to hold onto the lead, as TTT came alongside for a second time. In the sixth, Olympia took the lead for the third time. While TTT also kept on scoring, this time, Olympia stayed on top.

In the top of the first inning, Olympia Haarlem scored twice off of American righthander Brandy Marlett, who made her debut for Tex Town Tigers. She walked lead-off hitter Eva Voortman, who then stole second and third base, then scored when Jessie van Aalst followed with a double. She tried to stretch it into a triple, but was eliminated at third base. Hereafter, Virginie Anneveld walked in her first at bat of the season after having being sidelined with an injury. She moved to second base on a fielder's choice-grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels. With runners on first and second base, the game was interrupted for the first time due to the weather conditions. After a 7-minute delay for hail, the game continued, but the bases got loaded when Rosanne de Vries walked. Anneveld then scored on a grounder by Stephanie Pearce. The bases got loaded again when Rachel van Veen also walked, but three runners were left behind when Marlett closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the first inning, Tex Town Tigers got its first runner in scoring position off of starter Ilona Andringa. Merel Oosterveld led off with a walk and with one out, she moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Laura Wissink. That was followed by a 3-minute rain-delay and an inning-ending strikeout.

In the top of the second inning, Olympia Haarlem added three runs. With one out, Eva Voortman singled and moved on a grounder. After she had stolen third base, Virginie Anneveld walked, then both scored when Mariëlle Vleugels homered. With that, Olympia led 5-0 in the second inning and appeared to be en route to a mercy-rule victory. But the game was far from over!

After Olympia was retired in the top of the third inning, TTT rallied for five runs in the bottom of the inning to come alongside! Eloïse Tribolet led off with a walk, which was followed by the third weather-delay, this time again for rain. The game resumed after six minutes, but Eva Voortman then took over the pitching, but the lefthander ran into problems. She began with a walk for Merel Oosterveld. With one out, Laura Wissink reached on an infield-hit, which was followed by an error, resulting in a run. With runners on second and third base and one out, the bases got loaded when Dinet Oosting walked. Voortman then also walked Cheyenne Scheffer and then gave up a 2-run double to Shaneequa Kock. Hereafter, Myrthe Smid reached on an infield-hit, which enabled Scheffer to score the tying run.

Olympia Haarlem immediately re-took the lead in the top of the fourth. Brenda Beers led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Eva Voortman. Jessie van Aalst then reached on an infield-hit and stole second base. After Virginie Anneveld walked for the third time, Van Aalst stole third base, then scored on a force play-grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels. Now with two outs, Julia van der Meer entered the game as pinch-runner for Vleugels. Next batter Rosanne de Vries walked, which brought in new pitcher Zoe Gillis. She got the bases loaded when Stephanie Pearce walked and the next run was scored when Rachel van Veen also walked. Three runners were left behind when Gillis closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the fourth, it was Tex Town Tigers that left three runners behind. Nadine Marinus and Laura Wissink began with singles and advanced on a wild pitch. The bases got loaded when Lisa Marie Kovačevič-Köllner was hit by a pitch. However, all three stranded, as the next two batters struckout and a grounder ended the inning.

In the top of the fifth, Jessie van Aalst hit a triple for Olympia, but was left behind.

Halfway the fifth inning, the game was interrupted for the fourth and final time. After an 8-minute delay for hail, the game continued with Mariëlle Vleugels as new pitcher for Olympia. But she also ran into problems, as TTT came alongside again. She gave up three unearned runs, as the Olympia-defense made two errors. With one out, Eloïse Tribolet struckout, but reached on a passed ball. Next batter Merel Oosterveld reached on an error, then two runs were scored on a double by Nadine Marinus. Hereafter, Laura Wissink was walked intentionally to set up a force play. Moments later, Wissink was hit by the batted ball from Lisa Marie Kovačevič-Köllner and was ruled out. Kovačevič was credited with an infield-hit. With runners now at first and second base, an error was made on a grounder by Marije Oosting-ten Thij, which enabled Marinus to score the tying run. The two runners then stole second and third base, but were left behind. However, the score was now 8-8.

In the top of the sixth inning, Olympia Haarlem took the lead for the third time. Mariëlle Vleugels led off with a single and scored the go-ahead run on a double by Rosanne de Vries. With one out, Rachel van Veen also doubled to bring in De Vries. Another pitching change followed, as Cheyenne Scheffer took over from Zoe Gillis. She gave up a single to Amber Krijgsman, then saw a run being scored on a sacrifice fly by Brenda Beers.

Olympia now led 11-8 and this time, the team hold onto the lead, but TTT first narowed the deficit to only 11-10 in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and Myrthe Smid (fielder's choice) on first base, Eloïse Tribolet singled. Merel Oosterveld then connected for a runscoring single. When that was followed by an outfield-error, TTT got runners on second and third base. Another run was then scored on a grounder by Nadine Marinus. An intentional walk was then issued to powerhitter Laura Wissink, but the inning ended with a grounder.

Olympia Haarlem added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Virginie Anneveld led off with a single, then her pinch-runner Emma Wójcik stole second base. Next batter Mariëlle Vleugels was walked intentionally, but Rosanne de Vries followed with her second RBI-double. Another pitching change was made hereafter, as Brandy Marlett re-entered. With one out, she gave up a runscoring single to Rachel van Veen. Moments later, De Vries scored when a throwing error followed a stolen base van Van Veen. Olympia got the bases loaded when Amber Krijgsman and (with two outs) Eva Voortman walked. But the three were left behind when a flyout ended the inning.

Tex Town Tigers was able to add only one more run in its seventh inning. Marije Oosting-ten Thij led off with a single, advanced on a single by Shaneequa Kock with one out and later scored on a single by Myrthe Smid. A line out and flyout then ended what probably is the longest 7-inning game in history.

Olympia Haarlem collected 14 basehits in this game. Three of them were hit by Jessie van Aalst, including a double and triple. Mariëlle Vleugels scored three runs and batted in four, while also becoming the winning pitcher. Rachel van Veen batted in three runs and Rosanne de Vries produced two runscoring doubles and scored twice.

Tex Town Tigers had 12 basehits. Nadine Marinus batted in three runs.

Game 2

The second game went underway at 4:15 PM. At that time, the other three double-headers in the Golden League had all ended. The second game in Enschede appeared to become another long outing, as there was a 22-minute rain-delay in the first inning. However, the game didn't finish, as it was cancelled after another rainshower in the second at bat.

Olympia Haarlem opened the score in the top of the first inning off of starter Shaneequa Kock. Eva Voortman led off with an infield-hit, stole second base and scored on a following double by Jessie van Aalst.

Halfway the first inning, the umpires halted the game when it started raining again. This time, the delay lasted 22 minutes and it was then also decided that when another rain-delay would follow, the game would be cancelled definitively.

When the game resumed, Tex Town Tigers got two baserunners with one out. Nadine Marinus was hit by a pitch and Laura Wissink walked. Lisa Marie Kovačevič-Köllner followed with a single. That almost led to the tying run, but Marinus was eliminated at the plate. A double-steal led to runners to second and third base, but they were left behind.

In the top of the second inning, Olympia added two runs. With one out, Emma Wójcik singled, then Brenda Beers hit an inside-the-park-homerun. Hereafter, Brandy Marlett took over the pitching. She walked Eva Voortman, but then another rain-shower disrupted the game. This time, it also cancelled the game.
