Olympia Haarlem outscores Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - After having split its Opening Day double-header a week ago, reigning champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won twice on Saturday (April 20) against Hoofddorp Pioniers, which last season promoted to the Golden League.

In today's opener, Olympia Haarlem recorded a convincing 11-0 shutout-win in four innings.

The second game was much closer. Olympia Haarlem, which made six defensive errors, then led only 2-1 when the seventh inning began, but then added two insurance runs to win 4-1.

In today's first game, Olympia Haarlem rallied for five runs in both the second and third inning. Brenda Beers hit a triple and homerun, scored two runs and batted in five in her first game of the season for Olympia. She missed last week's opening games, as she was playing in Italy for Parma.

The first inning was scoreless. In the top of the first inning, Eva Voortman led off for Olympia Haarlem with a walk. But after reaching first base, she was replaced by pinch-runner Julia van der Meer, who later was caught stealing. There were no reports of injuries, but Voortman didn't return into the game.

Olympia Haarlem then rallied for five runs in the second inning off of starter Iris Strookman. Mariëlle Vleugels lef off with a single and Stephanie Pearce reached on a bunt-single. The bases got loaded when Shareday Christina walked. The first run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Chelsea Robison. With two outs, Brenda Beers hit a 2-run triple and went on to score herself on a single by Julia van der Meer. An outfield-error on a hit by Dinet Oosting made it a 5-0 score.

Olympia Haarlem had another 5-run rally in the third at bat. Again, Mariëlle Vleugels led off with a single. This time, the bases got loaded with one out when Shareday Christina and Chelsea Robison both walked. That led to a pitching change, as Sheila van der Tang took over. Like in the previous inning, the first run was scored on a sacrifice fly, this time hit by Emma Wójcik. Hereafter, Brenda Beers drilled the ball into deep leftfield for a 3-run, inside-the-park-homerun. Next batter Julia van der Meer singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Dinet Oosting to increase the lead to 10-0.

Olympia scored another run in the fourth inning on two errors.

Hoofddorp Pioniers got only one baserunner off starter Rosanne de Vries, who threw the first two innings. The lefthander gave up a lead-off triple to Shari van Heyningen in the second inning, but then retired the next three batters.

Mariëlle Vleugels took over in the third inning. She also got a runner on third base. With one out in the third, Femke Nuijten singled, stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch, but then also was left behind. After walking lead-off hitter Kelsey Huijzers in the fourth, Vleugels struckout the next three batters to end the game.

Game 2

In the second game, Olympia Haarlem made six defensive errors, but managed to stay ahead and win 4-1. The six errors in one game are the highest total for Olympia Haarlem, since it made five on July 4, 2015 in a game against Tex Town Tigers. The hightest total in recent years was nine, which was done by DSS on May 8, 2016 against the Talent Team Holland.

The first three innings remained scoreless. Pioniers-starter Serena Kersten retired the first eight batters she faced. In the third inning, she then gave up a 2-out single to Stephanie Pearce, who stole second base, but was left behind.

Eva Voortman started for Olympia Haarlem. The lefthander got her first baserunner in the second inning when she walked lead-off hitter Shari van Heyningen. With one out, Voortman struckout Mayara Brown, which ended in a double play, as catcher Dinet Oosting picked off Van Heyningen at first base. Voortman struckout the side in the third inning.

Olympia Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the top of the fourth inning on three basehits, but also left three runners behind. The Pioniers-defense contributed with two errors, resulting in one unearned run. Jessie van Aalst led off with a single, advanced on an error and Dinet Oosting walked. A single by Mariëlle Vleugels then opened the score. With one out, the bases got loaded when Amber Krijgsman singled. Next, it appeared that a force play was to be made on a grounder by Rachel van Veen. However, a throwing error followed and that enabled Oosting to score. It was then attempted to eliminate Van Veen at first base, but she was safe. On that throw, Chelsea Robison (the pinch-runner for Vleugels) tried to score, but she was then eliminated. Next, the bases were re-loaded when Emma Wójcik walked, but three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the inning.

Pioniers got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, but failed to do some more scoring, as two errors were made. Quilen Dirksz led off with a walk. Mariëlle Vleugels then took over the pitching from Eva Voortman, who moved into leftfield. Dirksz advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nina Oomes, then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Kelsey Huijzers, who ended up on second base. There, Femke Nuijten took over as pinch-runner and Shari van Heyningen was walked intentionally to set up a force play. The force play indeed came, as Nuijten was eliminated at third base on a grounder by Manon Marie, but that was followed by the second error in the inning, which led to runners on second and third base. But they were left behind, as a grounder ended the at bat.

Pioniers again left two runners behind in the bottom of the fifth and sixth inning. Olympia then scored two insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Eva Voortman led off with a single and Brenda Beers followed with a bunt-single. After a double-steal, they both scored on a sacrifice fly, respectively hit by Jessie van Aalst and Dinet Oosting to make it a 4-1 score.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Pioniers got a baserunner on second base, but was unable to add another run.
