Twins Oosterhout splits double-header with Hoboken Pioneers
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - The softball-team of Twins Oosterhout played a double-header against Hoboken Pioneers from Belgium on Sunday (March 24). On Saturday, Twins already had played a game against its second team during the celebrations of the club's Opening Day-activities. Twins won the game with a 19-1 score in an 8-inning game.

On Sunday, Twins and Hoboken split their double-header and both recorded a big victory. Twins won the opener, 15-4, then the Belgian opponent won the next game with a 16-7 score. For Twins, this was its first loss after having six games in a row. This includes five games the team played during the Pre-Season Indoor Tournament, two weeks ago. Last week, a double-header against Quick Amersfoort was cancelled due to the weather conditions.

While it was chilly today, the team played its first outdoor-games this weekend. And so, players and coaches, and of course the umpires, were able to prepare for the upcoming season.

Afterwards, Twins Head Coach Jeroen den Duijn stated: ,,It was a good feeling to be on the field again. I told my players, that in this phase of the season, the result is not important. This is not about winning or losing, this is to prepare for the new season.''

Preliminary Rosters Golden League

Game 1
In the opener, Twins took an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Evelyne De Wolf. With one out, Sara Riou walked. Thereafter, Minke Blok and Machteld Rector followed with runscoring singles. After Sterre den Duijn added another basehit, the next run was scored on a grounder by Corinne Ammerlaan. The fourth run was scored on a passed ball.

The Belgian opponent got three runs back in the top of the second inning off of Romy van der Ham, who went the distance for Twins. Van der Ham and Ammerlaan last season played for Euro Stars. Veteran player Sarah Van Der Meiren led off with a single, then another single followed from next batter Isa Los, who plays for Roef! in the Dutch Golden League. An error accounted for the first run. With two outs, there was a walk for Shauni Thys, who in the past played for Twins in the highest Dutch league. A walk for Evelyne De Wolf loaded the bases, then two runs were scored on a single by Kate Geldof, who also will play for Twins this season.

Twins scored another run in its second inning, then rallied for five runs with two outs in the third at bat. Anne Ketelaar and Imane Alou Issa then both singled and thereafter, the rally went underway, as five runs were scored on four productive hits. Sara Riou doubled in a run, then Minke Blok hit a 2-run single, Machteld Rector added an RBI-triple and Sterre den Duijn closed with a runscoring double.

Twins staged another 5-run rally in the fourth inning. This time, the rally began with a walk for Ellinor Keepers. With one out, Anne Ketelaar hit a runscoring single. With two outs, Minke Blok delivered an RBI-single. Twins then got the bases loaded and Sterre den Duijn cleared the bases with a 3-run triple. She was 4-for-4, just as Minke Blok. Twins collected 16 basehits in this game.

Game 2
In the second game, the roles were reversed. This time, it was Hoboken Pioneers that produced 13 basehits and went on to score 16 runs to record a convincing victory.

Hoboken rallied for four runs in the top of the first inning. With the bases loaded, it was Isa Los, who delivered a runscoring single off of starting pitcher Danielle ten Donkelaar. The two were teammates when they played together as Tex Town Tigers a few years ago. Ten Donkelaar pitched for Amsterdam Pirates last season. After a force out at the plate, two runs were added on singles by Gwendy De Jaegher and Shauni Thys. A sacrifice fly by Evelyne De Wolf lifted the lead to 4-0.

Twins cut the deficit in half in its first at bat off of Hoboken-starter Andrea Lindgren. The veteran righthander saw lead-off hitter Imane Alou Issa reach on an error. Sara Riou then singled and with one out, the bases got loaded when Machteld Rector walked. Sterre den Duijn then connected for a 2-run single.

Hoboken added four more runs (two unearned) in the top of the second inning, which was highlighted by a 3-run double by Andrea Lindgren, who later scored herself on an error.

A passed ball enabled Ellinor Keepers to score for Twins in the second inning, but Hoboken reacted with two runs of its own in the third. With two outs, Sarah Van Der Meiren walked and scored on a triple by Isa Los, who then scored moments later on a single by Andrea Lindgren.

In the bottom of the third, Sterre den Duijn had another successful at bat. She led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Corinne Ammerlaan. At that moment, Den Duijn had hit a basehit in six consecutive at bats.

In the top of the fourth, Den Duijn took over the pitching, but gave up three runs. They were all unearned, as the at bat began with an error and a passed ball also contributed to the scoring.

Hoboken scored three more runs in the fifth to lift the lead to 16-4. Twins then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth with two outs off of reliever Kate Geldof. With one out, Machteld Rector singled and with two outs, the bases got loaded when Corinne Ammerlaan walked and Danielle ten Donkelaar singled. The first run was then scored when Ellinor Keepers reached on an error. The next two runs were scored when both Anne Ketelaar and Imane Alou Issa were hit by pitch. But three runners were left behind when a pop-fly ended the at bat.

Veteran players Andrea Lindgren and Sarah Van Der Meiren both played for Twins some years ago. American-born pitcher Lindgren played in the Dutch big league in seven seasons for Sparks Haarlem (2005) and Twins (2006-2011), before deciding to play in Belgium. Belgian utility player Van Der Meiren played five years for Twins (2007-2011) in the highest Dutch league. The two also played together in Belgium for Royal Greys, before transfering to Hoboken.
