Olympia Haarlem moves into first place with double-header win
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won its double-header against Sparks Haarlem on Sunday (April 28). The reigning champion won 4-0 and 4-1.

With today's double victory, Olympia Haarlem took sole possession of first place. Before this weekend, the team shared first place with Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels. Today, Terrasvogels split its double-header against Tex Town Tigers.

This weekend, all double-headers were scheduled for Sunday instead of Saturday. In all softball- and baseball-leagues, no games were scheduled on Saturday, which was King's Day. This was done to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy and participate in activities or attends festivals to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. In several previous seasons, games were scheduled on King's Day (April 27) and in the past Queen's Day (April 30). But not this year.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Game 1

In the opening game, Olympia Haarlem collected ten basehits, including three by Eva Voortman, who also was the winning pitcher.

The lefthander pitched the first three innings in which she gave up no basehits to Sparks Haarlem. Ilona Andringa then pitched the fourth inning. In the fifth, Voortman returned and completed the game. According to the scoring rules, a starting pitcher needs to throw four complete innings in a 7-inning game to be the winning pitcher. In the past, those innings had to be consecutively. That rule was adjusted in recent years, as those innings doesn't need to be pitched consecutively anymore. Since Voortman threw six innings, she complied to these rules to become the winning pitcher.

Olympia Haarlem left two runners behind in the first inning, but then opened the score with two unearned runs in the second at bat when the Sparks Haarlem-defense committed two errors.

With one out in the second, Shareday Christina tripled off of starter Ginger de Weert. With two outs, she scored when Brenda Beers reached on an error. She stole second base, then scored when an outfield-error followed on a single by Eva Voortman.

Olympia added a run in the fourth. With one out, Eva Voortman reached on an infield-hit and scored on a double by Dinet Oosting, who ended up on third base. Hereafter, Rebecca Soumeru took over the pitching for Sparks and retired two of the next three batters.

The home-team scored its fourth run in the fifth at bat. With two outs, Stephanie Pearce was hit by a pitch. Her pinch-runner Julia van der Meer moved into scoring position on a bunt-single by Brenda Beers, then scored on a double by Eva Voortman.

As mentioned, Voortman held Sparks Haarlem hitless in the first three innings. Ilona Andringa then retired the side in the fourth. When Voortman returned as pitcher in the fifth, she gave up a 2-out single to Anne Blaauwgeers, but she stranded on first base.

In the sixth, Kimberly Jones singled with two outs for Sparks Haarlem, but also was left behind on first base.

Sparks Haarlem got its second and final runner in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning. With one out, Dominique Sprengers singled, but was eliminated when she tried to stretch it into a double. Feline Poot then doubled, but Voortman closed the game with a strikeout.

Game 2

In the second game, Olympia Haarlem again took an early lead, but it was Sparks Haarlem that got a chance to do so first.

In the top of the first inning, with two outs, Chantal Versluis reached second base on an error, but Olympia-starter Mariëlle Vleugels closed with a strikeout.

In second inning, Dominique Sprengers and Feline Poot opened with singles. They moved on a sacrifice bunt, but stranded on second and third base.

Sparks-starter Katie Donovan retired the side in the first inning, but then gave up a run in the second at bat. Rosanne de Vries led off with a walk and stole second base with two outs. She then scored when Mariëlle Vleugels followed with a double.

Olympia Haarlem added a run in the third inning (again with two outs), but also left three runners behind. Eva Voortman led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, she was eliminated at third base on a grounder by Jessie van Aalst, who later also stole second base. Next, the bases got loaded when Rosanne de Vries and Brenda Beers both walked. A passed ball enabled Van Aalst to score the second run for the home-team. The bases were re-loaded when Shareday Christina also walked, but three runners were left behind when Katie Donovan closed with a strikeout.

In the fourth inning, Sparks Haarlem again left runners behind on second and third base. Maxime van Dalen led off with a walk and with one out, Feline Poot also walked. The two advanced on a grounder from rookie Dewi van der Steen, but then were left behind.

In the bottom of the fourth, Olympia scored its third run. This time, Rachel van Veen led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third base on a wild pitch. She was unable to advance on an infield-hit by Amber Krijgsman, but that also led to a pitching change. Kirsten Scheele took over and gave up an one-out single to Dinet Oosting that enabled Van Veen to score.

Sparks Haarlem again got into scoring position in the fifth inning, but again was unable to score. Eva Voortman pitched this inning for Olympia. She hit lead-off hitter Ginger de Weert, who was the designated player for Sparks in this game. With one out, she was forced out on a grounder by Kimberly Jones. Defensively, Jones played in an unfamiliar position in this game for Sparks Haarlem, as she was the catcher. A walk for Chantal Versluis followed and a passed ball led to runners on second and third base. Voortman then closed with a strikeout.

Sparks then did score a run in the sixth off of Ilona Andringa, who pitched the final two innings. With one out, Feline Poot doubled, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Olympia got the run back in its sixth at bat. With one out, Dinet Oosting singled, stole second base and scored on a double by Jessie van Aalst to make it a 4-1 score.

Ilona Andringa then retired the side in the seventh inning to close the game.
