Netherlands also empty-handed against Czechs

LIMA (Peru) - The Netherlands Under-18 Team lost 2-1 to the Czech Republic on Wednesday-afternoon (December 8), which was Day 3 of the WBSC Under-18 Women's Softball World Cup.

For the Netherlands Team, this was its third loss of the global event. The team opened on Monday with a surprise 3-1 loss against host Peru, then lost 11-5 on Tuesday against Chinese Taipei.

The Czech squad had suffered a big 10-0 loss in its first game against reigning champion USA. On Tuesday, the Czech Team recorded its first win, an 8-0 shutout against Peru. With a 2-0 lead, the Czechs rallies for six runs in the seventh inning. By nipping the Netherlands today, the Czech Team recorded its second victory.

In July, the two teams also faced each other during the Under-18 European Championship in Czech capital Prague. The Czech Team then won 8-0 in what was a bad game for the Orange Team, which committed seven errors. Besides that, the team not only was kept scoreless, but also hitless by pitcher Katerina Kindermannová, who then struckout 13 batters.

Today, the Netherlands Team had a more productive game off of Kindermannová, but again was left empty-handed. Although the Orange Team got a chance to open the score in each of the first three innings, it was unable to do so and left six runners behind in scoring position in these at bats. Kindermannová again dominated for the Czech Team and today, the righthander struckout twelve batters.

Earlier this year, Kindermannová also played for the main-squad of the Czech Republic in the European Championship in Italy.

On Thursday, the Netherlands plays its next game against defending champion USA, which played a tough game today against Puerto Rico. The American team needed an extra inning to score the lone run in the game to record its fourth victory. The USA began with a 10-0 shutout against the Czechs, then shutout Colombia 8-0 on Tuesday. In its second game on Tuesday, the USA also played a tough game against Mexico, leading only 4-3 in the sixth inning, before adding an insurance run to win 5-3.

The first three innings of today's game remained scoreless, but it was the Netherlands Team that got some chances to open the score in these three at bats.

Orange-starter Esmee Ames (who pitched in relief in the first two games) retired the side in the first two innings. On the other hand, Czech starter Katerina Kindermannová got runners in scoring position in her first three innings.

In the bottom of the first inning, Sanne van der Putten led off for the Netherlands with a single, then Tenley Boersma walked. After Kindermannová had followed with a strikeout, the two runners executed a double steal. But with runners now on second and third base, Kindermannová recorded another strikeout, then a flyout ended the at bat and this first scoring opportunity for the Netherlands.

In the bottom of the second inning, Kindermannová began with a strikeout, but then again got two baserunners, as Else-Fieke de Boer was hit by a pitch and Reganied Franka walked. Again, the Orange Team got runners on second and third base, as the two baserunners this time advanced via a wild pitch. Kindermannová closed with two more strikeouts.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Netherlands got runners on second and third base for the third consecutive time. Tenley Boersma led off with a single, then her pinch-runner Yarah Zuiver moved to third base when next batter Sietske Drijvers also singled. For the second time in three innings, the first two batters had reached base, but the Netherlands was unable to score. With runners at the corners and no outs, Drijvers then also moved into scoring position on a grounder by Julia Kwakernaak. And so, for the third time, the Netherlands had two runners in scoring position with only one out. But Kindermannová then recorded her sixth strikeout and a pop-fly ended the inning.

The Czech Team got on base for the first time in the top of the third inning. Karolína Dvorákova led off with a single. With one out, Štěpánka Boučková reached on a bunt-single. Next, Dvorákova moved to third base on a flyout, but the two runners stranded.

After the Netherlands had left six runners behind in scoring position, the Czech Team struck with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Marina Burkovičová and Magdaléna Kavanová opened with singles and advanced on a following sacrifice bunt by Róza Blažková. A pop-fly then accounted for the second out. Moments later, both runners scored. First, Burkovičová scored on a wild pitch, which brought Kavanová to third base. When a throwing error from catcher Tenley Boersma back to the covering pitcher Esmee Ames at the plate followed, Kavanová also could score.

The Netherlands got one run back with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning. First, Kindermannová began with another strikeout. Reganied Franka then walked, moved on a grounder by Michelle Schuur and scored on a single by Sanne van der Putten. Kindermannová closed with her eighth strikeout.

In the next two innings, the Czechs got only one baserunner (who stranded on first base in the sixth). The Netherlands was also retired in order in the fifth, then also was kept off the bases in the sixth at bat when Katerina Kindermannová added two more strikeouts.

In the top of the seventh, the Czech Republic came close to adding an insurance run. Karolína Dvorákova led off with a double, but she was left behind on second base, as a pop-fly, a groundout and flyout followed.

The Netherlands got one final chance to undo the deficit, but was unsuccessful to do so. With two outs, Tenley Boersma singled. After Boersma had been replaced by temporary runner Sanne van der Putten, the dominating Katerina Kindermannová closed the inning and the game with her twelfth strikeout.

And that left the Netherlands empty-handed for the third time, while the Czech Team recorded its second victory.
