Onze Gezellen wins exhibition double-header vs. Hoofddorp Pioniers
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Onze Gezellen recorded two comfortable victories on Saturday (April 17) in an exhibition double-header against Hoofddorp Pioniers. Playing at home, Onze Gezellen won 13-4 and 14-4 with both games ending via the mercy-rule.

Last season, Hoofddorp Pioniers remained winless, losing all 23 games it played. After the 22nd game, the club and the coaching-staff separated. After the season, several players left the team.

This season, Pioniers will led by the experienced coach Berend Mannessen, who has a long history in coaching. He also has been a member of the coaching-staff of the Netherlands National Team. The last few years, he also conduct clinics with former National Team Head Coach Craig Montvidas for the European Softball Coaches Association (ESCA). Mannessen is good in coaching and teaching young players. This season at Pioniers, he has a team with young, but talented players, including ten rookies, who will learn a lot from the veteran coach.

Although Pioniers lost both games, there were some positive notes for the young team. In both games, Pioniers opened the score and led halfway the first inning against the more experienced team of Onze Gezellen, which includes most players who last season played for Terrasvogels with whom the club merged. In the first game, the Pioniers-defense committed no errors, while the OG-defense made five. In the second meeting, Pioniers made only two errors.

When trailing in the first inning, Onze Gezellen both times answered with a productive rally to decide the game early.

,,These were our first games, it was the first time that our pitchers faced batters and that our batters faced pitchers. Today, I told the players to just take their at bat and that was done reasonably well'', reacted Pioniers Head Coach Berend Mannessen. ,,I'm a positive person and I saw good things. Of course, it was good to take the lead twice. I tried out some things in the infield. The outfield did very well. It will be difficult in the beginning. We have to work hard, but I think that we are on the right track. Our players have to gain experience and confidence. I think that we certainly can give some resistance then.''

Coming Saturday, Hoofddorp Pioniers will play a double-header at home against Sparks Haarlem. Onze Gezellen then plays a double-header at Tex Town Tigers.

(April 17)

Game 1
In today's first game, Hoofddorp Pioniers boldly took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With one out, Julia Westhoek singled and advanced to third base on an outfield-error. Kelsey Huijzers then walked and Julia Kwakernaak followed with a runscoring single off of starting pitcher Lisa Meyering. Moments later, Amy-Lynn Felix added a 2-run single. Meyering then closed with two strikeouts.

Onze Gezellen answered with a 6-run rally in its first at bat. With one out, the next eight batters reached base Starter Fleur Witvliet got the bases loaded when Kelsy Pieneman and Babs de Jonge both singled and Karin Tuk walked. The three then scored when next batters Jessica Waasdorp, Masha Meloni and Desiree Adriaansz all walked, which tied the score. Léa Maartens then took over the Pioniers-pitching, but she walked Amy Udink, which gave OG a 4-3 lead. An infield-hit by Pascalle Toet brought in the next run. Hereafter, Noa Armirotto flied out to become the second out (she also was the first out) in her second at bat. Kelsy Pieneman then delivered her second single in the inning. That brought in Adriaansz, but Udink was eliminated at the plate when she also tried to score on a nice defensive play.

Onze Gezellen added a run in the second at bat off of pitcher Fleur Witvliet, who re-entered. Babs de Jonge led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Masha Meloni.

Three runs were scored in the third. Amy Udink (walk), Pascalle Toet (infield-hit) and Noa Armirotto (walk) loaded the bases, then respectively scored on a single by Kelsy Pieneman, grounder by Babs de Jonge and sacrifice fly by Karin Tuk.

Trailing 10-3, Pioniers got a run back in the top of the fourth after having left a runner behind on third base in the previous at bat. With two outs, Julia Kwakernaak tripled in the third, but was left behind. In the fourth, Babette van den Elsker led off with a single and advanced to third on a following error. Next batter Ilse Stoovelaar grounded out, but Van den Elsker was unable to advance. She then went on to score on a wild pitch. With one out, Sophie van der Heide walked and Fleur Witvliet reached on an error, but pitcher Lisa Meyering then struckout her ninth and tenth batter.

Onze Gezellen scored three more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Pascalle Toet then led off with a single, stole second base and scored on a following double by Noa Armirotto. She advanced on a passed ball, then scored on the fourth single in the game by Kelsy Pieneman, who went on to score herself on the third basehit by Babs de Jonge.
