NEW YORK, New York (USA) -
Andrelton Simmons has won the National League Rawlings Platinum Glove Award, which is given annually to the top defensive player in each league.
This was Simmons' first full season as short stop of the Atlanta Braves in the Major League.
Manny Machado, the third baseman of the Baltimore Orioles won the Award in the American League.
The announcement was made on Friday (November 8).
The Platinum Glove Award is chosen by fans, but this year was the first time that sabermetrics were involved in the voting process.
Simmons finished in first place, less than one percent above Yadier Molina, the catcher of the St. Louis Cardinals.
Andrelton Simmons led the National League in several defensive sabermetric categories, which were determined by the Society for American Baseball Research.
For instance, Simmons led the Defensive Index and his 41 defensive runs saved was the highest total since this analytical category was introduced in 2003.
After completion of the season, Simmons had won the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, which is handed out annually to the best defensive players per position in each league.
During and after the season, Simmons was complimented for his defensive skills and is frequently called the best defensive player in the Major League.
In March of this year, Simmons reached the semi-final of the World Baseball Classic with the Netherlands National Baseball Team.
