Tigers win AL Central; Yankees, Royals eliminated
Nederlands
MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (USA) - Detroit Tigers is the champion of the Central Division in the American League. Again. The team has captured the AL Central crown for the third consecutive season.

The team of Manager Jim Leyland won the title with a 1-0 victory at Minnesota Twins behind the superb pitching of Max Scherzer. He gave up only two hits in seven innings, while striking out 10 batters. This was Scherzer's 21st victory of the season (having lost only three).

The lone run of the game was scored in the first inning. Austin Jackson led off with a triple and scored on a following single by Torii Hunter. And that was all the Tigers needed on Wednesday-evening.

With only three games remaining in the regular season, the Tigers still have a chance to finish with the best won-loss record in the American League. Detroit now stands at 93-66, while AL East champion Boston Red Sox is at 96-63 and AL West champion Oakland A's has a 94-65 record.

The Wild Card race in the American League was brought back to three teams on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Baltimore Orioles was eliminated. On Wednesday, New York Yankees and Kansas City Royals were also eliminated. New York was beaten 8-3 by Toronto Blue Jays, while Kansas City was shutout 6-0 by Seattle Mariners. Their losses in combination with victories of Cleveland Indians and Texas Rangers led to the elimination.

Cleveland won 7-2 vs. Chicago White Sox and is currently in place for the second Wild Card. Texas defeated Houston Astros 7-3 and trails Cleveland. Both Cleveland and Texas also are still in the race for the first Wild Card (fourth best overall record in the league). That spot belongs to Tampa Bay Rays at the moment.
