Dutch Team wins exhibition game
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - The Dutch National Baseball Team played an exhibition game against the Dutch Junior Team (AAA) on Wednesday-evening at the site of L&D Amsterdam Pirates in the Dutch capital. The Dutch squad won 9-5 in a 9-inning game, which was halted in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, due to rain, which started to fall from the sixth inning on, but became steadier from the seventh on.

The game marked the debut as Manager for Steve Janssen, who took over from Brian Farley earlier this year. Three players also made their debut in the National Team, being Gianison Boekhoudt, Jesse Aussems and Chris Mowday.

Steve Janssen used a different pitcher in all of the nine innings played, while Eric de Bruin, the Manager of the Junior-squad, used eight pitchers.

For the Dutch Team, the game was its lone one to prepare for the upcoming World Port Tournament, which opens next Sunday in the Neptunus Familiestadion in Rotterdam.

The Dutch Team was off to a good start, scoring twice in the first at bat off of starter Tim Halderman. Playing at his home field, Roelie Henrique led off with a single, advanced on a grounder and scored when an error was made on a grounder by Danny Rombley. Moments later, Rombley stole second base and scored on a 2-out single by Vince Rooi, who himself was thrown out trying to advance to second base. Rombley barely scored before Rooi was tagged out at second base.

In the second at bat, Michael Duursma and Shaldimar Daantji singled with two outs. Next batter Gianison Boekhoudt then appeared to hit a homerun in his first at bat in the Dutch Team. He drove the ball into deep rightfield, but there Nick Peels made a nice play, catching the ball just in front of the fence to end the inning.

Diegomar Markwell and Rob Cordemans, the two veteran pitchers in the Dutch pitching staff, threw threw first two innings and both retired the side. In the third inning, Kevin Heijstek was the pitcher and appeared to do the same, as he got two quick outs. But then Rowan van Hoek walked and the bases got loaded when Milan Lammerts and Nick Peels both singled. A following single by Jules Peters then brought in Van Hoek and Lammerts also was waved home. He was sure to be tagged out at the plate, but there, a thrown from leftfield ended in an error and thus a run. The Juniors left two runners, as Heijstek ended with a strikeout.

In the home of the third inning, the Dutch Team re-took the lead off of Tom de Blok. With two outs, Danny Rombley walked and advanced to third base on a single by Bryan Engelhardt. Rombley then scored while Engelhardt was eliminated in a pick-off/caught stealing-situation.

The Dutch Team added two runs in the next at bat off of Floris Timmer. With one out, Dwayne Kemp singled and Bas Nooij doubled. A nice squeeze-bunt by Michael Duursma and an error on a hit by Shaldimar Daantji then made it 5-2.

The lead was enlarged to 7-2 in the fifth inning off of Maickel Rietel. Gianison Boekhoudt and Roelie Henrique both walked and advanced on a sac-bunt by Stijn van der Meer. The runs were then scored on a sac-fly by Danny Rombley and a wild pitch.

Trailing 7-2, the Juniors got back into the game by scoring three runs in the sixth inning off of new pitcher Arshwin Asjes. With one out, Nick Peels walked, then a single by Jules Peters was followed by a throwing error, which put runners at the corners. Back-to-back doubles by Ruar Verkerk (1-run) and Rachid Engelhardt (2-run) then made it 7-5.

The Dutch Team took some more distance by scoring twice in the seventh inning off of Kevin Bosch. With two outs, Danny Rombley singled and Bryan Engelhardt walked. After advancing on a wild pitch, the two scored on a single by Jeffrey Arends.

After the AAA-team scored their three runs in the sixth inning, the final 11 batters of the Juniors were retired in order by four pitchers. Bayron Cornelissen struckout the side in the eighth at bat.
