Diegomar Markwell temporarily off roster Caracas
Nederlands
CARACAS (Venezuela) - Dutch pitcher Diegomar Markwell has temporarily been removed from the roster of Leones del Caracas. This is an administrative move, which also happens to other players during the season, meaning a player can left off the roster for a week (or longer). This gives the club the opportunity to have a look at other players. In this case, a decision has to be made concerning two outfielders.

Markwell will be off the roster for a 2-week period and it is expected that he will be activated again on November 9. In the meantime, the lefthanded pitcher of Dutch champion DOOR Neptunus and the Dutch National Team will remain with the team and is in uniform. Markwell: ,,On days when it is my turn to pitch, I'm throwing in the rookie team of the club''.

A team in the Liga Venezolana de Béisbol Profesional consists of 40 players from the beginning of the season, 31 local players and nine foreign players. On November 1, that will be reduced to 25 local players and nine foreigners to form a 34-man roster.

When the season began, Caracas had 23 pitchers on its roster. ,,I like it here very much'', Markwell said. ,,It is going well, my arm feels good.''

Markwell made his debut in the Venezuelan professional league on October 12 when he took over the pitching in the first inning with his team trailing 5-0 vs. Tigres de Aragua. Markwell had a good outing, threw 3 2/3 innings and gave up no runs, but the Leones lost 9-8.

Since then, he appeared in two more games. On October 15, he became the tenth pitcher for Caracas in the game vs. Caribes de Anzoategui and pitched 1/3 inning as closer. He then walked a batter, committed a balk, which led to a run and struckout the next batter in a 6-5 loss.

On October 19, in the game at Bravos de Margarita, Markwell entered the game in the fourth inning with runners on first and third base and no outs. Markwell got the first batter he faced to ground into a double play, but that led to a run. Hereafter, a line ended the inning. In the next inning, Markwell gave up a lead-off single, but he then picked off the runner at first base. A double and strikeout followed and then Markwell was replaced. The run was to be the lone one in the game.
