Neptunus trails in 9th, wins in 10th in season-closer
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - A day after being eliminated for first place in the Overall Standings and thus missing automatic qualification for next years European Champions Cup, Curaçao Neptunus needed an extra inning to win vs. UVV. On Sunday (August 2), Neptunus closed its regular season with a 3-2 win after trailing 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

On Wednesday, Neptunus flies to Italy, where they will meet UnipolSai Bologna on Thursday-evening in the opener of the best-of-three Final of the European Champions Cup. Game Two will be played on Saturday in Rotterdam. When a third game is needed, that will be played on Sunday, also in Rotterdam.

UVV closes the regular season coming week against Mampaey The Hawks.

On Thursday, August 13, Neptunus opens the Play-Offs against Corendon Kinheim. UVV then opens the Play-Downs against The Hawks.

(August 2)

After having left two runners in the first at bat, Neptunus opened the score with one run in the second inning. Urving Kemp led off with a double, then moved on an one-out single by Shurman Marlin. Kemp then scored while Marlin was forced out on a grounder by Mourik Huijser. In the next innings, Neptunus reached base frequently, but was held scoreless by Ian Delemarre, who started instead of the announced Jurjen van Zijl. He was unable to pitch due to sickness.

In the third inning, Stijn van der Meer led off with a single and Christian Diaz singled with two outs, but the two were left. In the fifth, Neptunus got the bases loaded with two outs. Benjamin Dille and Gianison Boekhoudt then walked and Christian Diaz reached on an error, but a pop-fly then ended the inning. In the sixth, Neptunus again left two runners when the inning ended on a close call at first base. The home team stranded another runner in the seventh, when Delemarre was supported with a double play.

Neptunus-starter Gijs Timmer also did fine, giving up only three hits in seven innings, but he trailed 2-1 when he left the mound. Timmer and Saturday's starter Kevin Kelly were inserted into the starting rotation of Neptunus for this series, as righthander Kenny Van Den Branden and lefthander Diegomar Markwell were not available. Van Den Branden is recovering from an injury. Markwell's absence is more serious, as he is currently on Curaçao, due to sad family circumstances.

Timmer held UVV scoreless in the first five innings and was supported with a double play in the third inning. UVV left two runners on first base in the first five innings, but then struck in the sixth at bat. With one out, Gilmer Lampe was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Tony Enos then walked and Dennis De Quint followed with a runscoring single that tied the score. Moments later, Enos put UVV ahead by scoring on a sacrifice fly by Omar Williams. The ball was caught by second baseman Benjamin Dille, who was running backwards and had to jump over rightfielder Christian Diaz to avoid a collission.

UVV got an opportunity to take some more distance in the top of the eighth inning when Berry van Driel took over for Timmer. He gave up singles to Dennis Ribbens and Gilmer Lampe, but hereafter, Tony Enos grounded into a double play and a foul-out ended the inning.

In the ninth inning, closer Loek van Mil took the mound for Neptunus and because of some other changes, also became part of the batting order. The righthander retired the side and it was his spot in the batting order that would decide the game in the tenth inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Oscar Meuris became the new pitcher for UVV, relieving Timo van Ancum, who had thrown the eighth inning. Van Ancum retired the side in the eighth, which also saw 3B Umpire Henri van Heijningen being hit on his shinbone by a foul ball hit by pinch-hitter Raily Legito.

In the ninth, with one out, Meuris hit Stijn van der Meer with a pitch. With two outs, Gianison Boekhoudt walked, then Christian Diaz hit the ball into leftfield where leftfielder Rick Kuipers made a diving attempt to catch the ball. Kuipers indeed caught the ball, but it rolled out of his glove, meaning he had no control of the ball and Diaz ended up with a double that tied the score.

In the top of the tenth inning, Van Mil struckout the side. In the bottom of the tenth, the two tie-break runners moved on a sacrifice bunt by Shaldimar Daantji. To create a force play, Rien Vernooij was walked intentionally, which brought up Loek van Mil in the batting order. He was replaced by pinch-hitter Adrian Anthony, who then turned for a squeeze, bunting the ball back to Meuris. The pitcher slipped, had no play and with that, Anthony delivered a walk-off, bunt-single that scored Christian Diaz from third base and gave Neptunus a 3-2 win.
