South Korea shuts out Cuba in opening game domed stadium

SEOUL (South Korea) - South Korea shutout Cuba 6-0 on Wednesday (November 4) in an exhibition game for both teams to prepare for the upcoming Premier12. This was the first meeting between the two countries since facing each other in the baseball-final of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing (China). The Koreans then won 3-2 to capture the Gold Medal.

The game was the first of two games between the two countries and are played in the new Gocheok Sky Dome in South Korean capital Seoul. These games, the Seoul Super Series, are part of the grand opening of the first domed baseball-stadium in South Korea. Construction of the stadium began in 2008 and it was opened on September 16 of this year. There is a seating capacity of 25,000 and the stadium will be the new home of the professional Nexen Heroes next season.

In today's game, Cuban starting pitcher Yoanni Yera gave up three hits and three runs. The lefthander threw only 2/3 inning and also walked four batters. The Koreans added a run in the fifth off of Danny Betancourt, then two more in the sixth at bat.

The South Korean team collected 12 basehits, while Cuba registered only four basehits off of five pitchers. Hyun-soo Kim was 2-for-3, both doubles.

Yulieski Gourriel, Rudy Reyes, Yorbis Borroto and Yordan Manduley were the only Cubans to register a basehit for the team, managed by Victor Mesa.

Cuba and South Korea will meet again onThursday.

Cuba will play in Pool A during the Premier12, which is the 'Netherlands' pool. Cuba will meet the Orange next Wednesday. Cuba opens on Tuesday against Canada.

South Korea is playing in Pool B in the preliminary round. The team opens the even next Sunday against Japan in Sapporo (Japan). Both teams then travel to Taiwan for the remainder of the preliminary round.
