Kinheim hands Pioniers huge shutout-loss
Nederlands
HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Only four days ago, on Sunday, Vaessen Pioniers registered a big 16-0 shutout-win vs. HCAW. Tonight (Thursday, August 6), the Hoofddorp-team played in a similar game. Only this time, they were at the wrong side of the score, losing 17-0 to Corendon Kinheim.

Kinheim collected 22 basehits, including three by Mervin Gario, Bryan Engelhardt and Niels van Weert.

It was not the first big loss for Pioniers vs. Kinheim. On June 2, Pioniers lost 22-5 to the Haarlem-squad, which also was a home game. However, that game (a make-up game) was played at the site of Kinheim, due to maintenance to the Pioniers-field.

In both games, Elton Koeiman was the losing pitcher. In both games, Bryan Engelhardt homered. And in both games, Pioniers ended the game with a position player on the mound. On June 2, it was second baseman Daniel Fernandes, tonight it was rightfielder Dirk van 't Klooster.

Another fact, Marco Stoovelaar was one of the Official Scorers in both games, doing the play-by-play. By the way, he also was one of the scorers last Sunday at the HCAW vs. Pioniers game.

Kinheim set the tone in tonight's game right away in the first at bat by scoring three quick runs off of starter Elton Koeiman. Kevin Moesquit led off with a walk, Mervin Gario singled and Bryan Engelhardt followed with a 3-run homerun into deep rightfield. While three outs followed, Kinheim never looked back and went on to add more runs runs in the next innings, except the sixth.

Two runs were scored in the second inning. The bases got loaded when Victor Draijer, Niels van Weert and Jochem Koedijk all singled. Moesquit then lined out, but the runs were scored on a following single by Gario and force play-grounder by Engelhardt.

In the third, Kinheim lifted the lead to 7-0 and at that moment, the game was more or less played, as Pioniers was unable to do something back.

In the third, Jeffrey Arends and Dudley Leonora singled, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Victor Draijer. A runscoring single by Niels van Weert was followed by an error, which led to the next run. After Moesquit also had singled, Kinheim had runners on first and second base when Reggie Bomberg took over the pitching. He ended the inning with a strikeout, but then ran into problems in the next at bat, giving up four hits and four runs.

In the fourth, Kinheim scored the four runs with two outs. With Bryan Engelhardt on third base, a second force out followed on a grounder by Dudley Leonora, which enabled him to score. A single by Victor Draijer and walk for Niels van Weert then loaded the bases. A wild pitch and 2-run single by Jochem Koedijk did the rest and lifted the lead to 11-0.

In the fifth, Kinheim again rallied for four runs. It was also an inning that saw five substitutions. Mervin Gario led off with a triple, then Bryan Engelhardt walked. Dashenko Ricardo followed with a runscoring single and a wild pitch moved Engelhardt and Ricardo to third and second base respectively. Dexter de Weert then entered the game as pinch-runner for Ricardo and he and Engelhardt scored when Jeffrey Arends singled. When Dudley Leonora followed with a single, three changes were made at the same moment. Calvin Martinus took over as pinch-runner for Arends, Sven van de Sanden became the pinch-hitter for next batter Victor Draijer and Dennis Buring took over the pitching for Reggie Bomberg. Van de Sanden hit a force play-grounder that brought Martinus to third base and he then scored on a single by Niels van Weert. A strikeout for pinch-hitter Jasper Keijzer and a flyout by Kevin Moesquit then ended the inning, but Kinheim was now leading 15-0.

The sixth inning was the lone one in which Kinheim didn't score, as Buring retired three of the four batters he faced, including two strikeouts.

Kinheim scored its final two runs in the seventh inning off of Dirk van 't Klooster, who came in from rightfield to pitch the final inning. He retired the first batters he faced, then gave up a double down the leftfield-line to Sven van de Sanden. With two outs, Van 't Klooster hit Jasper Keijzer with a pitch, then the two runners scored on a double by Kevin Moesquit.

Pioniers reached base several times tonight, but again stranded a lot of runners. In total, ten runners were left behind, including four in scoring position and the bases loaded once.

In the first inning, off of starter Glenn Wassink, the home team got two baserunners with two outs, but a grounder closed the at bat.

In the third inning, trailing 7-0, Pioniers got the bases loaded with no outs. Daniel Fernandes led off with a single and moved to third on a single by Dirk van 't Klooster. A walk for Danny Rombley loaded the bases. Fernandes was then forced out on a grounder by Vince Rooi, which kept the bases loaded, as Kinheim missed a double play at first base. A flyout and strikeout ended the inning, meaning the three runners were left behind.

In the fourth, Pioniers had runners on first and second base with two outs, but again they were left behind.

Scott Ronnenbergh took over the pitching in the sixth, gave up a lead-off single to Kevin Dirksen, but then followed with three strikeouts. Pim Walsma retired the side in the seventh to end the game.
