Neptunus Sports Team of the Year in Rotterdam
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - The baseball-team of Curaçao Neptunus has won the award for 2015 Sports Team of the Year at the Sport Awards Rotterdam-Rijnmond. The annual sports gala was held on Monday-evening (December 7) at the Nieuwe Luxor Theater in Rotterdam.

This year, Neptunus registered two championships. After finishing in second place in both the first and second half of the season (and thus also in the overall standings), Neptunus appeared to be eliminated in the Play-Offs. However, the team qualified for the Holand Series, then won 4-1 against Corendon Kinheim to become the Dutch baseball-champion again. The team also captured the title a year ago. Besides that, Neptunus also won the European Champions Cup, winning the best-of-three against Fortitudo Bologna (Italy), 2-1.

It was the seventh time that Neptunus was voted Sports Team of the Year in the Rotterdam-area and the first time since 2009. Neptunus also won in 1991, 1994, 2000, 2001 and 2003. Also nominated for the award tonight were the Papendrechtse Korfbal Club (PKC) and Victoria Squash. This year, PKC won the indoor competition-title for the ninth time, while Victoria won the national championship in squash.

Neptunus' Head Coach Evert-Jan 't Hoen was nominated for the third consecutive year for the Coach of the Year Award. 't Hoen won in the previous two years, but this time, the award went to Arno Havenga, who guided the Netherlands Women Waterpolo Team to the Silver Medal this year at the World Championship in Kazan (Russia). The Waterpolo-squad also captured the Bronze Medal at the FINA World League in Shanghai (China).

Neptunus-player Dwayne Kemp was nominated for Male Athlete of the Year, but also didn't won. The award was won by Rutger van Schaardenburg (sailing), who in June captured the title at the European Championship in Denmark.

Nominated for Volunteer of the Year was Coach Annie for her work at baseball-club Portland Poema's. She shows an enormous passion for the children she coaches at the Poema's. But the award went to 80-year old Alie Kooren (rowing), who is a volunteer for over 35 years at the Stichting Roeivalidatie.

Other winners tonight were:
Female Athlete of the Year - Marhinde Verkerk (judo), gold at European Championship at Baku (Azerbaijan)
Talent of the Year - Marieke Keijser (rowing, skiff), gold at the European and World Championship for Juniors
Handicapped Sports Award - Atomium '61, G-handball, Goalball and KombiFit
