Kinheim hands Neptunus two costly losses
Nederlands
ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - Corendon Kinheim returned home from Rotterdam on Saturday (August 15) with more than a great feeling after winning twice against title defender Curaçao Neptunus in the first round of the Play-Offs.

First, the two teams completed their first game, which was halted in the top of the eighth last Thursday-evening due to heavy rain and lightning. With the score tied at 1-1, Kinheim took the lead in the ninth, then Neptunus came alongside, but lost 3-2 in the tenth thanks to a wild pitch.

In the regular scheduled second game, Kinheim led 3-0 in the fourth inning, then trailed 5-4 after six innings, but went on to win 7-5.

With this, Kinheim registered two important victories, as it now has won the 3-game series vs. Neptunus, which will be decisive in case of a tie.

By losing twice, Neptunus dropped to third place in the Play-Off Series, as Kinheim moved into second place. L&D Amsterdam Pirates has a commanding lead after winning twice vs. Vaessen Pioniers today, 3-2 (10 innings) and 7-2.

In the Play-Downs, DSS shutout HCAW 6-0 to become the leader, while UVV recovered after Thursday's big loss vs. Mampaey The Hawks and won 4-1.

(August 15)

Last Thursday-evening, Neptunus opened the score in the first inning off of starter Tom Stuifbergen. Dwayne Kemp and Benjamin Dille led off with singles, then Raily Legito followed with a runscoring double to give Neptunus an 1-0 lead.

In the top of the eighth inning, with one out, Neptunus-starter Orlando Yntema walked Dudley Leonora. He advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Jasper Keijzer, then scored the tying run on a following single by Jochem Koedijk. That led to a pitching change, as Loek van Mil took over for Yntema. However, during this break, heavy rain started to fall and the game was delayed. Moments later, it was stopped definitively.

Complete recap first part of Thursday's game

When the game resumed today, it was expected that Loek van Mil was no longer with the team. The tall righthander was scheduled to fly to the USA on Friday, as he recently signed a minor league-contract with the Minnesota Twins, meaning he will return to professional baseball. However, due to visa-problems, Van Mil couldn't leave yet and so, he was back in uniform for Neptunus this afternoon and resumed his role as reliever.

And so, Van Mil returned to the mound in the top of the 8th with an 1-1 tie and Jochem Koedijk being the runner on first base with two outs. Van Mil gave up a single to Kevin Moesquit, then an RBI-single to Mervin Gario that gave Kinheim a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, Neptunus made it another tie score off of Arshwin Asjes, who took over the pitching for Pim Walsma. The Kinheim-closer walked lead-off hitter Urving Kemp, but he was forced out on a bunt by next batter Dwayne Kemp. Benjamin Dille then grounded out, but Dwayne Kemp was able to move from first to third base and slid safely into the base while third baseman Mervin Gario attempted to catch the high throw from first baseman Jeffrey Arends. Neptunus then stated that Gario had interfered with the sliding Kemp. After discussing the situation, the umpiring crew concluded that it indeed was obstruction and awarded Kemp home plate, resulting in the tying run.

However, in the next two innings Neptunus left three runners in scoring position, while Kinheim re-took the lead in the tie-break and this time, the Haarlem-squad held onto it.

In the top of the 9th, Jeffrey Arends walked for Kinheim with two outs and advanced on a wild pitch, but then was left behind. In the bottom of the 9th, Gianison Boekhoudt led off for Neptunus with a single, then his pinch-runner Adrian Anthony got into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Christian Diaz. Asjes then struckout Stijn van der Meer and walked Rien Vernooij intentionally to set up a force play. But Shaldimar Daantji then flied out, sending the game into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, tie-break runners Dudley Leonora (1B) and Jeffrey Arends (2B) moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jasper Keijzer. After a foul-out, the bases were loaded by walking Kevin Moesquit intentionally, but hereafter, Loek van Mil uncorked a wild pitch, which moved the three runners and so Arends scored to give Kinheim a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 10th, Shaldimar Daantji (1B) and Rien Vernooij (2B), the two tie-break runners for Neptunus, were also moved to the next base via a sacrifice bunt by Urving Kemp. Like the Neptunus-defense in the top half, Kinheim created a force play by walking Dwayne Kemp intentionally. And so, Neptunus had the same situation as Kinheim moments earlier. But the Kinheim-defense then turned a game-ending double play on a grounder by Benjamin Dille to secure the win.

In the second game, Kinheim held an early 3-0 lead, then was leading 4-1 in the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Neptunus rallied for four runs to take a 5-4 lead and appeared to turn the game its way. However, as in the opener, Neptunus again was left empty-handed, as it failed to hold onto the lead. Kinheim rallied for three runs in the ninth to win 7-5. And with that, the Haarlem-squad also won the 3-game series against the reigning champion.

After leaving two runners in both the first and second inning, Kinheim opened the score in the third at bat, then added two runs in the fourth inning.

In the first inning, Neptunus-starter Diegomar Markwell hit Mervin Gario with a pitch with one out, but the lefthander then picked him off successfully at first base. Next, Markwell gave up singles to Bryan Engelhardt and Phil Ortez, but they were left behind. In the second at bat, Dudley Leonora (with one out) and Jochem Koedijk (with two outs) both singles, but also stranded.

In the third, Gario led off with an infield-hit, then moved on a following throwing error. Next, he moved to third base when Engelhardt also singled. Hereafter, Gario scored on a sacrifice fly by Ortez, which also led to a double play, as Engelhardt was also eliminated as runner.

In the fourth, Kinheim added two runs. Jeffrey Arends led off with a single, then reached second base safely when a throwing error followed on a force play-grounder by Dudley Leonora. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Victor Draijer and scored on a 2-out single by Kevin Moesquit to make it 3-0.

In the fifth inning, Kinheim failed to add more runs after getting its first two batters on base. Markwell first walked Engelhardt, then hit Ortez with a pitch, but a force out, flyout and force out ended the inning.

Kinheim-starter David Bergman held Neptunus scoreless in the first four innings. In the first inning, after giving up a lead-off single to Dwayne Kemp, he was supported with a double play. The righthander retired the side in the second and third inning. In the fourth, after having retired ten batters in a row, Bergman gave up a 2-out single to Raily Legito, but he was left behind.

In the fifth, Stijn van der Meer homered for Neptunus with one out, but Kinheim got the run back immediately in the top of the sixth. Victor Draijer led off with a triple and scored on a following single by Jochem Koedijk, who was 3-for-4. A double play and flyout then ended the at bat, but Kinheim was now leading 4-1.

That changed moments later when Neptunus rallied for four runs. With one out, Dwayne Kemp doubled and Benjamin Dille singled. Hereafter, Raily Legito added a runscoring single and next batter Gianison Boekhoudt followed with a 3-run homerun to put Neptunus ahead, 5-4.

However, Neptunus failed to take more distance in the next at bats. It was retired in order again by Bergman in the seventh, then left a runner in the eighth off of Pim Walsma. Dwayne Kemp led off that inning with a double, but he would strand on third base.

Markwell, who by the way didn't struckout a batter in this game, retired the side in the seventh. With a 5-4 lead, he was relieved by Kevin Kelly in the eighth, who retired the side, including two strikeouts.

Kinheim then struck again in the top of the ninth inning, scoring three runs to re-take the lead. Jochem Koedijk led off with a single, then was awarded second base on a balk and advanced to third base on a single by Kevin Moesquit. The tying run was then scored on a sacrifice fly by Mervin Gario. An intentional walk for Bryan Engelhardt followed to create a force play, but then Kelly struckout Phil Ortez. With two outs, Kinheim took the lead when Dashenko Ricardo and Jeffrey Arends both singled to make it 7-5. Hereafter, Kelly was replaced by Berry van Driel, who ended the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the ninth, Neptunus now faced a 7-5 deficit, but got two baserunners. With one out, Stijn van der Meer singled, which led to a pitching change. Tom Stuifbergen, who was the starting pitcher on Thursday-evening and threw six innings (80 pitches), took over for Walsma. He gave up a single to Rien Vernooij, but the righthander then struckout Shaldimar Daantji and Urving Kemp to end the game, secure the win and earn a save.
