Season-champion Amsterdam Pirates opens Play-Offs with two wins
Nederlands
AMSTERDAM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates, which closed the regular season as winner, opened the Play-Offs on Saturday (August 15) winning twice vs. Vaessen Pioniers to take a commanding lead in the Championship Round.

First, the two teams completed their first game. On Thursday-evening, Amsterdam Pirates led 2-0, then Pioniers came alongside in the eighth inning after a rain-delay. The game was interrupted three times by rain, but restarted each time after a delay. The total rain-delay was one hour and four minutes. However, moments after the teams were about to start the top of the 10th inning, shortly after midnight, rain interrupted the game again. This time, it was halted definitively and postponed to today, resulting in a 3-2 win for Pirates.

In the regular scheduled second game, Pirates won 7-2.

In Rotterdam, second placed Curaçao Neptunus led 1-0 in its opener on Thursday vs. Corendon Kinheim, which came alongside in the top of the eighth inning. Shortly after a pitching change, the game was halted due to heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and strong winds. Today, the game resumed, resulting in a 10-inning, 3-2 win for Kinheim, which then won the second game with a 7-5 score after trailing 5-4. With this, Kinheim moved into second place in the Play-Offs.

In the Play-Downs, DSS shutout HCAW 6-0 to become the leader, while UVV recovered after Thursday's big loss vs. Mampaey The Hawks and won 4-1.

(August 15)

On Thursday-evening, Amsterdam opened the score in its first at bat off of starter Ricardo Hernandez Sanchez. Michael Duursma led off with a walk and advanced on a passed ball. He then moved to third base when Nick Urbanus singled and the bases got loaded when Kenny Berkenbosch also walked. While having the bases loaded and no outs, the Amsterdam-squad scored only one run. With one out, Duursma scored on a force play-grounder by Remco Draijer.

Amsterdam added its second run in the bottom of the second inning. Jesse Aussems led off with a bunt-single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rashid Gerard. With two outs, Aussems scored on a single by Michael Duursma to make it 2-0.

In the top of the eighth, the rain and Pioniers struck, while the Amsterdam-defense committed two costly errors. With one out, Vince Rooi walked and that led to a pitching change. Starter Rob Cordemans was relieved by lefthander Robin Schel to face lefthanded hitter Mark-Jan Moorman, but he also walked. With two runners on base and one out, the game was then interrupted for the first time by rain. A 24-minute delay followed and when the game resumed, Tom de Blok took over the pitching for Amsterdam. On his first pitch, he was greeted with a runscoring single by Kevin Dirksen that narrowed the deficit to 2-1. The bases then got loaded when Quintin De Cuba reached on a fielding error. Next, another error followed on a force play-grounder by Djewi Appelman, which led to the tying run.

After two more rain delays, the score was still tied at 2-2 after nine innings. One minute after midnight, the tenth inning was about to start. Daryl Williams (1st base) and Vince Rooi (2nd base) were to be the tie-break runners for Pioniers. However, it didn't come that far, as rain struck again, this time much heavier and accompanied by lightning. Moments later, the game was stopped definitively by the umpiring crew.

Today, the game resumed in the top of the tenth inning and 13 minutes later, the game was over.

Daryl Williams (1B) and Vince Rooi (2B) were the tie-break runners for Pioniers, who then moved on sacrifice bunt by Kevin Dirksen. A force play was set up via an intentional walk for Quintin De Cuba. Hereafter, Hendrix struckout Djewi Appelman and a grounder by Kevin Weijgertse ended the inning.

Pioniers also returned with its Thursday-pitcher, being closer Bayron Cornelisse. With Linoy Croes (2B) and Michael Duursma (1B) being the tie-break runners, then righthander got the bases loaded when Nick Urbanus reached on a bunt-single. Hereafter, Cornelisse faced Kenny Berkenbosch, who then received a walk-off walk to end the game and give Amsterdam a 3-2 victory.
