UVV recovers after big loss

VLEUTEN (Neth.) - After suffering an unexpected big loss on Thursday-evenining, UVV recovered to win 4-1 on Saturday (August 15) vs. Mampaey The Hawks.

UVV decided the game late, scoring three runs in the eighth inning.

Timo van Ancum went the distance for UVV, struckout four batters and gave up eight hits. In the regular season, Van Ancum appeared in 19 games, but started only two of them. The last time Van Ancum threw a complete game was on September 28, 2013 when he was the winning pitcher in the 2-1 victory of ADO Lakers in the fifth game of the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off vs. Twins. With that win, ADO Lakers extended its stay in the big league.

The game remained scoreless in the first three innings. UVV then opened the score with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

After being retired in order in the first inning, UVV got a scoring opportunity in the next at bat. With one out, Mike Bazuin singled and Tony Enos walked. With two outs, Jordan Illis reached on an infield-hit, which moved the runners and should have led to a basesloaded situation. However, Bazuin overran his base and was eliminated on the throw coming back from first base, ending the inning.

In the third, UVV left a runner on third base, but then score in the fourth. With one out, Mike Bazuin walked, which led to a pitching change. José Moreno took over for starter Evan Simons, then Bazuin advanced on a wild pitch. With two outs, he also reached third base on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Norbert Jongerius.

UVV-starter Timo van Ancum retired the first eight batters in a row. With two outs in the third, he gave up singles to Chris Williams and Jules Peters. However, Williams was eliminated at third base, trying to take an extra base on the hit by Peters.

In the fourth, The Hawks got a runner on third base when Odion Gouverneur led off with a single and moved on an errant pick-off and grounder, but he then stranded.

Was Williams eliminated on third base in the third, two other baserunners were also eliminated on the basepaths in the fifth. Now trailing 1-0, lead-off hitter Brian Raap struckout, but reached on wild pitch. With one out, Raap was picked off. Next, Louie-Jay Sienders walked, but was caught stealing to end the inning.

Still leading only 1-0, UVV took more distance by scoring three runs with two outs in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, Joris van Ballegooy singled, then Gilmer Lampe was awarded first base on catcher's interference. The two moved on a grounder then the bases got loaded when Omar Williams walked. After the latter was replaced by pinch-runner Rick Kuipers, Mike Bazuin delivered a 2-run single. Moments later, Kuipers also scored, just before Bazuin was caught stealing.

Now trailing 4-0, The Hawks scored its lone run in the top of the ninth. Odion Gouverneur and Julian Goins led off the at bat with singles. Goins was then force out on a grounder by pinch-hitter Kevin van Veen. Shortly hereafter, Van Veen also was forced out on a grounder by Stephen Henson, but that enabled Gouverneur to score. Brian Raap followed with a single, but then the third force out in this at bat ended the game.
