Amsterdam Pirates wins in ninth inning vs. Pioniers

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates completed a 3-game sweep on Sunday (August 16), winning 8-6 at Vaessen Pioniers.

Initially, Amsterdam had an apparent comfortable 5-0 lead in the sixth inning, but then Pioniers rallied for three runs. Amsterdam added a run to make it 6-3, then Pioniers again had a productive at bat, scoring three runs in the eighth to make it a 6-6 tie.

In the top of the ninth inning, Amsterdam scored twice to leave the field victorious after all.

Amsterdam Pirates collected 12 basehits, including three by Nick Urbanus and Kenny Berkenbosch. Six of the seven runs were scored by the first four batters in the Amsterdam line-up.

Amsterdam Pirates opened the score today with three runs with two outs in the third inning off of veteran pitcher Elton Koeiman. The righthander hit lead-off hitter Rashid Gerard with a pitch. With one out, he advanced on a single by Roelie Henrique. With two outs, Nick Urbanus delivered a 2-run triple, then scored himself moments later on a single by Kenny Berkenbosch.

Koeiman held Pirates scoreless in the next two innings, but gave up two more runs in the sixth at bat. Kenny Berkenbosch led off with a single, then the bases got loaded with one out when Bas Nooij and Jesse Aussems both walked. Next, Rashid Gerard singled through the infield to bring in a run. Linoy Croes added a sacrifice fly to lift the lead to 5-0.

Amsterdam-starter Kyle Ward held Pioniers scoreless in the first five innings. In the first inning, the lefthander gave up an one-out double to Dirk van 't Klooster, but he then retired the next eleven batters in a row. In the bottom of the fifth, Ward gave up a lead-off single to Mark-Jan Moorman, but then next batter Quintin De Cuba lined into a double play.

In the sixth, trailing 5-0, Pioniers scored three runs with two outs. With one out, Kevin Weijgertse and Daniel Fernandes both singled, but the latter was forced out on a grounder by Dirk van 't Klooster. With runners on first and third base, Danny Rombley singled in a run. Hereafter, Vince Rooi walked to load the bases and two more runs were scored when Mark-Jan Moorman followed with a 2-run single. It marked the end for Ward, who was relieved by Robin Schel. He got a grounder to end the inning.

In the seventh inning, Pirates took some more distance, adding a run off of new pitcher Dennis Buring. With one out, Nick Urbanus singled, moved on a single by Kenny Berkenbosch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Remco Draijer. Hereafter, Sedley Karel took over for Buring and closed the inning with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the seventh, Dennis Burgersdijk relieved Robin Schel. He walked lead-off hitter Kevin Dirksen, but then retired the next three batters.

After Pirates was retired in order in the top of the eighth by Karel, Pioniers again scored three runs with two outs to come alongside. With two outs, Vince Rooi and Mark-Jan Moorman both walked, which led to a pitching change. Still leading 6-3, Daan Hendrix took over for Burgersdijk, but he was greeted with an RBI-double by Quintin De Cuba. Hereafter,Kevin Dirksen also delivered a runscoring single and as an outfield-error followed, De Cuba was able to score the tying run. With a runner on second base, pinch-hitter Milan Lammerts grounded out to end the inning.

With the score now at 6-6, Amsterdam Pirates immeditately re-took the lead in the top of the ninth inning. Roelie Henrique led off with a single, then closer Bayron Cornelisse was brought in to relief Sedley Karel. Henrique then advanced on a passed ball and a a single by Michael Duursma. With runners on first and third base, two outs followed, but then a wild pitch gave Pirates a 7-6 lead and another runner in scoring position. Remco Draijer followed with a double to make it 8-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, Hendrix retired the side to seal the victory.
