DSS secures spot in next years big league
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS saw a minimal 2-1 lead being erased in the eighth, but responded with three runs to win 5-2 in its opener vs. Mampaey The Hawks on Thursday (August 20).

With the victory, DSS not only remained unbeaten in the Play-Downs, it also moved into first place and officially secured itself of a spot in next years big league. In the remainder of the Play-Downs, DSS can still end up in a tie with last placed The Hawks. For that to happen, DSS has to loose all remaining five games, while The Hawks has to win all remaining games. When The Hawks does that, it means that it will end the Play-Downs with a sweep against HCAW, which then ends up in last place.
DSS also can end up two points below HCAW when it wins all remaining five games. But in that case, it will be HCAW that sweeps The Hawks, which then ends up in last place.
So, whatever the scenario, DSS can end up in a tie with or below one of the bottom two teams, but in both cases one of these two teams then will finish in last place.

In 2013, The Hawks played in its first big league-season and also succeeded in extending its stay, finishing in second place in the Play-Downs. Last season, The Hawks initially relegated losing the best-of-five Promotion/Relegation Play-Off vs. DSS. The Hawks returned to the big league in February after ADO Lakers withdraw its team.

(August 20)

The Hawks opened the score in the first inning, came alongside in the eighth, but ended up empty-handed, as DSS had a strong finish.

In the first inning, The Hawks scored its first run off of starter Tim Halderman. With one out, Odion Gouverneur singled, then moved to third base on a wild pitch with two outs and scored on a following triple by Berend Ruben. The latter then stranded when a groundout followed.

American Enoch Deaton started for The Hawks. The lefthander retired the side in the first, saw DSS strand a runner in the second, but then gave up the tying run in the third. Joffrey Heus led off with a single. A strikeout and groundout followed, but an error on a grounder by Mark Smit led to the tying run.

Halderman then retired the side (again) in the fourth and fifth inning and was supported with a lead in the bottom of the fifth. DSS first stranded a runner on second base in the fourth. With one out, Seb Visser singled, but then Deaton struckout Levine Gabriëls and Ryan Miner.
In the fifth, Joffrey Heus led off with a single, then Mitchel Dautzenberg walked with one out. A force out on a grounder by Mark Smit led to runners on first and third base, then a single by Sven Jongejans gave DSS a 2-1 lead.

After giving up the RBI-triple to Berend Ruben in the first inning, Tim Halderman retired 18 batters in a row. With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, that streak ended when he walked Stephen Henson with two outs. After Henson had stolen second base, Halderman closed with a strikeout.

In the top of the eighth inning, The Hawks came alongside. With two outs, Halderman walked Amir Daou, who then advanced to third base on two consecutive wild pitches. When next batter Jules Peters also walked, Halderman was relieved by Max Ploegstra. Peters then stole second base and in that situation, Daou was able to steal home and score the tying run. Hereafter, Odion Gouverneur walked, but the inning ended when Peters was caught stealing at third base.

DSS immediately broke the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mitchell Koot led off with a single, then reached second base safely when Enoch Deaton made a throwing error trying to eliminate him on a comeback-grounder by Seb Visser. Koot then was forced out at third base on a bunt by Levine Gabriëls. Hereafter, Tommy van de Sanden was inserted as pinch-runner for Visser and he and Gabriëls advanced on a wild pitch, then both scored when Ryan Miner followed with a triple. With Miner on third base, José Moreno entered the game as reliever for Deaton. He saw Miner score when Joffrey Heus successfully put down a squeeze sacrifice bunt to give DSS a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the ninth, closer Kevin Geestman took the mound. He struckout the side to earn his third save in the Play-Downs.
