Kinheim avoids elimination with 10-inning comeback-victory
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) - On Saturday (August 29) Corendon Kinheim was one ball away from elimination for the Holland Series, trailing 3-2 vs. Vaessen Pioniers. The Haarlem-squad then not only came alongside, it went on to win 4-3 in 10 innings.

A loss would have meant that L&D Amsterdam Pirates and Curaçao Neptunus would have qualified for the final. Today, Neptunus also won its second game vs. Amsterdam. With that, Neptunus and Kinheim couldn't end up in a tie anymore in case Kinheim had lost. A tie would have given Kinheim a spot in the final, as it had won its 3-game series vs. Neptunus.

But that scenario was erased when Kinheim won this afternoon. With that, Kinheim keeps its chances of reaching the best-of-seven alive.

And thanks to today's scores, the final day of the Play-Offs on Sunday will now become decisive to determine which two teams will meet each other in the Dutch championship-series.

(August 29)

Kinheim failed to hold onto an early 2-0 lead, but in the end was victorious after all. Kinheim scored a run in the first and second inning off of starter Lars Huijer to take an early lead.

In the first at bat, Kevin Moesquit and Mervin Gario led off with singles. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Phil Ortez, then Moesquit scored on a grounder by Dashenko Ricardo.

In the second inning, Niels van Weert singled with one out, advanced when Jasper Keijzer reached on an error and scored on a 2-out single by Kevin Moesquit, who had an important contribution in today's victory.

After scoring in the first two innings, Kinheim was held scoreless in the next six at bats by Huijer. The righthander gave up only four more additional basehits. Two of them came in the sixth inning after Pioniers had come alongside. With one out, Jeffrey Arends and Dudley Leonora then singled, but were left behind. In the seventh, Huijer was supported with a double play. In the eighth, with Pioniers now leading 3-2, he saw Kinheim get into scoring position for only the second time since the second inning. Lead-off hitter Phil Ortez reached on an error and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Dashenko Ricardo, but also stranded.

As Tom Stuifbergen was scratched from his start on Friday due to a back-injury, today's initial starter David Bergman moved to yesterday's first game. He gave up 20 hits in a 7-4 loss. Sunday's starter Glenn Wassink moved to today and he held Pioniers scoreless in the first four innings.

With two outs in the first inning, Wassink walked Danny Rombley and in the second, he gave up a 2-out single to Kevin Dirksen. He then retired the side in the third, then saw Pioniers leave two runners in the fourth. In that at bat, Rombley led off with a single and reached second base when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Vince Rooi. But hereafter, three outs followed.

In the top of the fifth inning, trailing 2-0, Pioniers came alongside with two outs, but also left the bases loaded. Djewi Appelman led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Kevin Weijgertse. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Dirk van 't Klooster and Danny Rombley both singled. The first run was then scored when Wassink hit Vince Rooi with a pitch and the score was tied when Mark-Jan Moorman followed with a single. The inning ended and three runners were left behind when Wassink struckout Quintin De Cuba.

In the seventh inning, Pioniers took a 3-2 lead off of new pitcher Pim Walsma. With one out, Rombley singled and scored on a following double by Rooi. Next, Moorman walked, but the inning ended when De Cuba grounded into a double play.

In the top of the eighth, Pioniers got a chance of adding an insurance run. Kevin Dirksen led off with a single, then tried to advance an extra base on a single by Djewi Appelman, but was eliminated at third base. A walk for Kevin Weijgertse followed, but Pioniers left two runners behind.

After Kinheim left a runner on second base in its eighth, closer Arshwin Asjes retired three Pioniers-batters in order in the top of the ninth. And that set up the bottom of the ninth with Pioniers leading 3-2. Closer Bayron Cornelisse took over for Lars Huijer, but he walked lead-off hitter Niels van Weert. He advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jasper Keijzer and moved to third base when Jochem Koedijk grounded out. With the tying run on third base, next batter Kevin Moesquit had an one-ball-two-strike count, meaning Kinheim was one strike away from elimination. Moesquit then connected well on the next pitch, hitting a single through the leftside of the infield, enabling Van Weert to score the tying run. A flyout followed, but the score was now tied and a tie-break followed.

In the top of the 10th inning, tie-break runners Vince Rooi (2B) and Mark-Jan Moorman (1B) moved on a sacrifice bunt by Quintin De Cuba. To create a force play, Kevin Dirksen was walked intentionally. That was successful, as the inning ended when next batter Djewi Appelman grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, Kevin Moesquit (2B) and Mervin Gario (1B) were the tie-break runners for Kinheim. The home team also opted to advance the runners via a sacrifice bunt, but that failed, as the bunt by Phil Ortez ended in a force out on third base. But hereafter, Dashenko Ricardo drilled the first pitch he saw from Cornelisse down the leftield-line for a walk-off double, as Gario scored the winning run.
