Former HCAW-pitcher active in professional Colombian league

SINCELEJO, Sucre (Colombia) - Venezuelan lefthanded pitcher Moisés Meléndez Izaguirre pitched in the Dutch big league in 2011 for HCAW, but currently, he is pitching in the Liga Colombiana de Béisbol Profesional. There, Meléndez pitches for the Toros de Sincelejo, one of the four teams in the professional winter league in Colombia.

Before traveling to Colombia, Meléndez played this Summer for Lincoln Saltdogs in the American Association, an American Independent League. There, he was a teammate of Curaçao-born pitcher Shairon Martis and first baseman/outfielder Curt Smith, who both particiapted with the Netherlands Kingdom Team in the recent Premier12. Smith is currently playing in the Nicaraguan professional competition.

In 2012 and 2013, the 29-year old Meléndez also played for the Saltdogs, which is managed by former Major League-player Ken Oberkfell.

This season, the lefthander appeared in 21 games for the Saltdogs (three starts) and was 0-2 with no saves and a 5.40 ERA. He was released by the Saltdogs on November 3, then continued his career in Colombia.

At the moment, Meléndez is 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA and has pitched 11 2/3 inning for the Toros in the professional Colombian league. The lefthander struckout eight batters and gave up 19 basehits.

The Toros are in second place with a 7-7 record, trailing Caimanes de Barranquilla, which is 9-4. On Sunday (November 29), the Toros lost 3-2 against the Caimanes in 10 innings at home in Estadio 20 de Enero at Sincelejo.

When he pitched in the Netherlands in 2011, Meléndez led the pitching-staff of HCAW with a 2.89 ERA, but was 0-6. He threw in 16 games (two starts) and earned one save, while striking out 72 batters in 53 innings.
