Amsterdam wins opening game Urbanus Tournament
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - L&D Amsterdam Pirates opened the 34th edition of the annual In Memoriam Charles Urbanus, Sr. Tournament on Friday-evening (April 1) with a 7-3 victory against host HCAW.

Last year, both teams also met in the opening game of the tournament and Amsterdam then won 2-0.

The last time that HCAW opened its own tournament with a victory was in 2013 when it won itself with a 2-0 against the Amsterdam-squad.

The tournament is named after Charles Urbanus (Sr.), who was a longtime coach of Amsterdam-based OVVO and the Netherlands National Baseball Team. In the seventies, Amstel Tijgers was created by a group of players coming from OVVO. It was Amstel Tijgers that originally organized the event for the first time in 1981 after Urbanus had passed away in 1980. After the tournament was held at the home site of Amstel Tijgers in Amsterdam from the beginning, the event switched in 1988 and 1989 to Haarlem where Haarlem Nicols was the host. In late 1988, Amstel Tijgers merged with HCAW, who then started to organize the tournament on its site in Bussum from 1990 on. There were no tournaments in 1985 and 2003 due to weather conditions. Charles Urbanus is the uncle of Charles Urbanus (Jr.), who played for OVVO and Amstel Tijgers and is the current Head Coach of Amsterdam Pirates.

The regular season opens on Thursday, April 14.

Game 1 - HCAW vs. L&D Amsterdam Pirates
Amsterdam-starter Kevin Heijstek dominated in the four innings he pitched. The righthander struckout nine batters and gave up only one basehit. With one out in the first inning, Heijstek gave up a single to former Pirate Roelie Henrique, who then stole second base and advanced on a grounder, but stranded on third base.

After giving up the single to Henrique, Heijstek retired eleven of the next twelve batters he faced. With one out in the third inning, he walked Jelle Blaauw, who also stole second base, but then was left behind.

Amsterdam opened the score with one run in the first at bat off of starter Kaj Timmermans. Nick Urbanus led off the game with triple, then scored on an one-out grounder by Gilmer Lampe.

In the second inning, Remco Draijer led off with a single and stole second base, but Timmermans then struckout two of the next three batters.

Pirates then rallied for four runs with two outs in the third inning, which decided the game. Patrick Bok led off with a double, then advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nick Urbanus. Hereafter, Michael Duursma was hit by a pitch. A grounder by Gilmer Lampe enabled Bok to score, then Danny Rombley singled and Remco Draijer followed with a 2-run triple. Moments later, he scored himself on a single by Kenny Berkenbosch.

Gijs van Els took over the pitching for HCAW in the fourth inning and did fine. The lefthander walked three batters in 2 1/3 inning, but neither of them went beyond first base.

After Van Els had walked lead-off hitter Rashid Gerard in the sixth, Patrick Bok lined the ball into centerfield. There, Boyd Tuhumury, who had just entered the game, made a great diving catch. Hereafter, Van Els was relieved by Marco Schel, who gave up two runs in the seventh inning. He walked lead-off hitter Gilmer Lampe and hit next batter Danny Rombley. Schel followed with a strikeout, but then gave up a 2-run double to Kenny Berkenbosch.

For Amsterdam, Robin Schel took over the pitching in the fifth inning. The lefthander gave up a lead-off double to Julian Goins, but then retired the next three batters.

With one out in the sixth, he was relieved by Daan Hendrix, who got two grounders, but then gave up three unearned runs in the seventh. He began with a walk for Vince Rooi, but then an error followed on a force play-grounder by Kevin Weijgertse. With one out, HCAW got the bases loaded when Kevin Nieveld also walked. HCAW then scored its runs on a single by Levine Gabriëls, a force play-grounder by Jelle Blaauw and a single by Boyd Tuhumury. But that was to be it for the Bussum-squad.
