Barracudas opens Mastenbroek Tournament with win

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Zürich Barracudas from Switzerland opened the 33rd edition of the annual, international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament on Friday-evening (April 1) with a come-from-behind 10-4 victory against host Tex Town Tigers.

Last season, Barracudas captured its first Swiss championship-title in 18 years, winning the best-of-five series against Therwil Flyers, 3-2. Barracudas won the fifth game with a 12-5 score to capture the third title in club-history. And they did it in the year when they celebrated its 30th anniverasary.

Tex Town Tigers finished in a tie for second place in the First Division B last season with a 14-4 record with Schiedam.

Game 1 - Tex Town Tigers vs. Zürich Barracudas
The Swiss team took an 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of starting pitcher Huub Smid. With one out and Harry Wischnewski on second base, Marc Schnider singled, then the run was scored on a grounder by Chris Michals.

Tex Town Tigers answered three runs in its first at bat off of Andi Rüesch. Brian Eraduas led off with a walk and stole second base, but then was eliminated in a rundown following a grounder by Gem Hooge Venterink. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Mikkel Oosterveld and Thijs Brand walked. The home team took the lead when Ian de Roode followed with a 2-run double and another run was added on a grounder by Sam van der Ploeg.

The lead was shortlived, as Barracudas rallied for three runs in the third, fourth and fifth inning.

In the third, Josh Crouse doubled with one out and scored on a single by Harry Wischnewski. The latter then scored the tying run on an error and the Swiss took a 4-3 lead thanks to a double by Tyler Wagner.

In the fourth, off of new pitcher Robin Vording, three runs were scored the easy way. With one out, Nick Fischer and Sascha Litscher singled, then the bases got loaded when Josh Crouse was hit by a pitch. The first two runners then respectively scored when Harry Wischnewski walked and Marc Schnider hit a sacrifice fly. A walk for Chris Michals re-loaded the bases, then next batter Tyler Wagner was hit by a pitch to bring in the third run in this at bat.

In the fifth, Josh Crouse delivered a 2-run single, then a grounder by Harry Wischnewski lifted the lead to 10-3. Tex Town Tigers scored its last run in the bottom of the fifth when Angelo Gibbs walked with one out and went on to score on a grounder by Mikkel Oosterveld.
