HCAW's triple play can't avoid loss against Neptunus
Nederlands

BUSSUM (Neth.) - HCAW turned an 'around-the-horn' triple play in the top of the fourth inning on Sunday (May 1) against Curaçao Neptunus. In the bottom of the at bat, HCAW scored a run. However, the successful fourth inning couldn't avoid a 7-2 loss to the Rotterdam-squad, who completed a sweep with the win.

Neptunus led only 3-1 after six innings, but then scored twice in both the seventh and eighth at bat.

Neptunus collected 11 basehits, including three by Christian Diaz.

Curaçao Neptunus vs. HCAW
Neptunus scored three runs in the first two innings against HCAW and went on to win 7-2 to complete a 3-game sweep. But it was HCAW that accounted for the highlight of the game by turning an around-the-horn-triple-play.

Neptunus scored its first run in the top of the first inning off of starter Jim Ploeger. With one out, Benjamin Dille walked, moved on a grounder, then scored on a single by Gianison Boekhoudt.

Two runs were added in the second at bat. Christian Diaz led off with a single, then almost was unsuccessful trying to stretch it into a double. However, an error followed at second base, enabling him to advance safely after all. He then scored when another error followed on a grounder by next batter Rien Vernooij, who moved to second base himself. The bases got loaded when Urving Kemp (with one out) and Benjamin Dille (with two outs) walked. Ploeger then also walked Raily Legito to bring in another run, but a grounder followed and so, three runners were left behind.

Hereafter, Neptunus was held scoreless in the next four innings, despite reaching base several times. In the third, Dashenko Ricardo led off with a walk and Christian Diaz singled. But with one out, the HCAW-defense turned a double play.

The defensive highlight came in the fourth inning. Urving Kemp led off with a walk and his brother Dwayne Kemp followed with a single. Next batter Benjamin Dille then grounded to third baseman Vince Rooi and the veteran started a triple play. He stepped on his base to force out Urving Kemp, then threw the ball to second baseman Roelie Henrique, where Dwayne Kemp became the second out. Henrique got the ball in time to first baseman Kevin Weijgertse to eliminate batter Dille and complete the triple play!

The last time a triple play was made was on June 10, 2014 and back then, Dille and Rooi also were involved. On that date, it was Neptunus that closed its home game against Vaessen Pioniers with an around-the-horn-triple-play. Rooi then played for Pioniers and reached on an error, Dè Flanegin (the current Head Coach of Pioniers) followed with a walk and hereafter, Mark Duursma grounded into a 5-54-43 triple play. Playing at second base for Neptunus was Dille. Stijn van der Meer started the triple play as third baseman and it ended at first baseman Gyenuar Lopez.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, HCAW narrowed the deficit to 3-1. Rossini Frolijk led off with a walk, then the bases got loaded when Vince Rooi was hit by a pitch and Kevin Weijgertse also walked. And so, HCAW had the bases loaded and no outs, but scored only once. A strikeout and infield-fly accounted for the first two outs, then Levin Gabriëls singled in a run, but a strikeout ended the at bat.

After HCAW left two runners behind in both the fifth and sixth inning, Neptunus took more distance by scoring twice in the top of the seventh inning off of reliever Ian Delemarre. With one out, Raily Legito singled and Gianison Boekhoudt walked. A runscoring single by Dashenko Ricardo followed. The bases got loaded when Christian Diaz also singled and another run was scored on a single by Rien Vernooij, but Neptunus left the bases loaded when a strikeout and force out ended the at bat.

Neptunus again scored two runs in the eighth to lift the lead to 7-1. Dwayne Kemp led off with a single and stole second base. When next batter Benjamin Dille was hit by a pitch, Giovanni Tensen took over from Delemarre. With one out, a double by Gianison Boekhoudt and a sacrifice fly by Dashenko Ricardo accounted for the runs.

HCAW had only one run left in the bottom of the ninth inning off of closer Kevin Kelly, who encountered some problems. He walked lead-off hitter Levine Gabriëls, then gave up a single to Gianni Frolijk. A force play-grounder followed, but then Roelie Henrique delivered a runscoring single. That was to be it for HCAW, as a strikeout and flyout ended the game.
